Newsletter From COMIN VOLUME 11 — NUMBER 2 MAY 1958 1958 ALUMNI WEEKEND SCHEDULE HONORARY DEGREES TO BE CONFERRED ALUMNUS FIRST RECIPIENT DOCTOR OF LAWS DEGREE Mr. Robert F. Rich was born on June 23, 1883, at Woolrich, Pennsylvania. He attended Mereersburg Academy in 1902 and was graduated from Dickinson Seminary in 1903. He received his Bachelor of Sci-ence degree from Dickinson College in Carlisle, Penn-sylvania. He was in the class of 1907 at Dickinson and was a member of Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity. ROBERT FLEMING RICH Mr. Rich, who served nine terms in Congress, is probably best known nationally for the expression which became his trademark while in Washington, "Where are you going to get the money?" He was elected to Congress with a large majority from the Sixteenth District to fill the unexpired term of Edgar R. Kiess whose death occurred in 1931. Mr. Rich succeeded his father, M. B. Rich, as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Williamsport- Dickinson Junior College after his father's death in 1931. He has continued to serve Lycoming College in the same capacity. His present position with the Woolrich Woolen XI ills in Woolrich, Pennsylvania, is that of Vice President and Treasurer. He is President of the Avis State Bank of Clinton County, and an officer or director of the following: Dickinson College The Methodist Home for Children Pearce Manufacturing Company Chatham Water Company Lock Haven Trust Company During all of his adult life, Mr. Rich lias been an active churchman. At the Woolrich Community FIVE HONORED AT 110th COMMENCEMENT At the 110th Annual Commencement of Lycoming College on June 8, 1958, five honorary degrees will be conferred. Having been granted the authority by the Pennsylvania Department of Public Instruction, two of the honorary degrees will be conferred for the first time; they are Doctor of Humane Letters and Doctor of Laws. It is significant that the first Doctor of Laws De-gree should be conferred on an alumnus, The Honor-able Robert F. Rich. He was elected Chairman of the Board of Directors of Williamsport-Diekinson Junior College in 1931 and has continued to serve Lycoming College in the same capacity. Also receiv-ing the Doctor of Laws Degree is George Shuman, Jr., Financial Vice-President and Treasurer of Dickin-son College. Bunche Commencement Speaker The Commencement speaker, Dr. Ralph J. Bunche, Under-Secretary Without Department, United Na-tions, will be the first person to receive the honorary degree, Doctor of Humane Letters, from Lycoming College. The Doctor of Divinity Degree will be con-ferred on the Rev. Howard T. Brinton, a missionary of The Methodist Church who returns to the Belgian Congo later this year. Mr. William T. Piper, Presi-dent and Chairman of the Roard of the Piper Aircraft Corporation, will be the recipient of the degree, Doctor of Humanities. HOMECOMING WEEKEND OCTOBER 18, 1958 Church he is President of the Board of Trustees. He lias served as lay delegate to the Central Pennsyl-vania Conference of The Methodist Church. He has also been a member ol the Jurisdictional Conference as well. Over the years, one ot the most generous and consistent benefactors ot Lycoming College lias been Robert F. Rich.
