Description
Letter sent by W . R . Sterling to Judge Thomas White from Washington DC in August 1864 . Sterling confirms that Harry , Judge White's son , was recaptured during an attempted escape from Confederate imprisonment . Sterling himself was among the group of five officers Harry escaped with, but unlike Harry he was fortunate enough to reach Union lines . Sterling recounts how, after the group of escapees split up , he and another man hid out in a large bush for several days before escaping to Union lines in Knoxville , Tennessee . The men were assisted by slaves as well as defectors from the Confederate army . Sterling writes that he hopes Harry is released from prison soon .
