Description |
Letter sent by P. R. Thombs [Pembroke R.] to Judge Thomas White from Chicago, IL on December 28, 1863. Thombs had been imprisoned in the Libby Prison camp along with White's son, Harry. [Thombs served in the 89th Illinois Volunteers as an Assistant Surgeon.] He has recently returned home after being exchanged. He was supposed to smuggle a letter from Harry, hidden in a small Testament, out of the prison. Due to a mix-up, however, Thombs picked up another Testament by mistake, leaving Harry's letter behind in the process. He apologizes to Judge White for the mistake, and he reports that Harry is in good health. He also reports that Harry has made at least one attempt to escape which was almost successful. |
