Description
Letter dated April 9 sent from William Gustin Lowry (Gus) to his mother Rhoda Stone Lowry from a camp near Yorktown . He left a camp near "Fortress " Monroe [Fort Monroe , Va.] a day earlier . Gus reports some skirmishes and that there is a large Union force . General McClellan is present as is General Henzleman [Heintzelman] who has done reconnaissance on Confederate forces . Gus describes Heintzelman . Gus reflects on his reasons for serving .
