mimler trull the discussion in the i'nited stale senate on the annexation of hawaii has been unusually instructive and able senator white from california dwell 1 great length and strength on the im portance of orrposition to the measnre it may be said that he is nearer to the islands than any other senator the man whose word however ill have more commanding authority among sen atom and reasonable reading reflecting citi/ens is justin s mun-iii of ver mont he has been a national reprc nt;ii ive for in er in yean and n senator for over 30 years from an intelligent northern state mr morrlll says that soon two senators will come knocking at the door asking admission that cannot incur until hawaii lias grown to statehood and when a state will be as much entitled to representatives and senators as wisconsin with her islands in lake superior as separate and dis tinct from the state as hawaii from america though not by so many stat u te miles hawaii is the connecting link between america and china and its location led to early establishment of numerous european and american set tiers and the rapid rise of a very exten sive trade and forms a common centre to the principal whaling grounds of the north pacific my cousin thomas adanuon represented our government there for many years and 1 had much information from him the hawaii islands and cuba have been topics of discussion for a half century or more and the diplomatic letters of daniel webster of april s 1852 an-1 of ed ward everett of dec 1 ls.'>2 show how this nation regarded the proposed tri partite treaty with france england and the united states suggested by france that neither nation should steal cuba nor let any other nation do it and that our people refused to enter into any treaty upon the subject hut laid down the doctrine of friendly relations with all nations but entangling alliances with none it is said that japan objects to us as a foster mother to hawaii yes well great britain objected to our starting nut on our own hook too away back 100 years ago but that did not scare americans in the days of old adams and washington ! death is an element to !>¦ taken into consideration in all political movements since the state convention a judge nf the so-called superior court has died and now the delegates must be recon vened to nominate another judge thus the great destroyer make room for office seekers as well as fur other rivals our ticket then will be to vote for a governor lieutenant governor two judges of the superior court il judge of our county sheriff treasurer coroner surveyor district attorney director of the poor senator and live assemblymen if governor hastings should nominate and appoint a judge he would most likely he accepted by the republicans as porter has been accepted who was thus appointed to fill a vacancy it is likely that the appointee will be taken from the late judge wickham's region of the state the only name i hear mentioned as that of one likely to he nominated by the democrats against judge weand who will i think have no opposition among the republicans is that of jac ob v gotwals formerly district attor ney a native of lower providence and at present a resident of pottstown jason sexton always on the alert for the public good put in his cheerful appearance at newtown and was greeted with universal favor by his many friends he has lately been busy organizing farmers institutes and in promoting all the interests of honest husbandry he is as much esteemed as an intelligent farmer as an incompatible legislator and the people will bo as proud to renominate him as thev were on the 20th to renominate wanger captain win w potts of swcdeland and i u haldeman of ilarlcysvillo candidates for the legislature also man ifested their great interest in the cause we all have so deeply at heart and the delegates and visitors gave them a hearty reception at newtown thomas 11 barker came as a delegate and per formed bis duty and pledged himself to every good measure and against every bad measure if renomlnated and elected this fall but there were so many at the wanger reunion that 1 cannot name them all j p hale jenkins candi date for senator was detained at home by the clemmer trial win 1 heeb ni>r was there and i have heard it said that he is jenkins rival ileehner is a worker and has seen service in the legislature there were many1 candi dates who were there to greet old friends and make new ones houser of ardmore and light from con shohocken und webster for sheriff white hallowell and hrownback for treasurer there is one thing all can didates should do they hiioum each publish a card in the republican papers of the county announcing their inten tion to be in the held naming the office and postollice address many a candi date is not known to he in the held till the delegates assemble the day of the convent ion names are often incorrect ly published and especially middle names and in one instance tlie certifi cate of election was given to the wrong man by reason of a wrong initial to the middle name being inserted in the bal lot it would have been easy for judge gordon if he had preferred to defer action on the dekalh woman's case until saturday morning and court was adjourned for the day when the verdict in the cleminer case was announced formei district attorney brownback for the defense entered the usual motion in arrest of judgment and for permission to file reasons for a new trial at 10.30 o'clock saturday morning lizzie dekalb was ushered into court and pleaded guilty her attorney j v hale jenkins addressed the court and urged leniency on account of her broken health and because of her testi mony in convicting clenmier judge swart consulted a few mo ments with judge weand and then said to lizzie dekalb you have pleaded guilty to being an accessory after the fact to a most horrible murder your own statement on the stand shows you were guilty in assisting the parties in the crime in concealing the evidences of guilt and in aiding and abetting in the consummation of the crime 1 can read between the lines of your testimo ny and see that you took i more active pait in the crime than that you state all the facts and circumstances convince me that you did more than conceal part of the things taken this perhaps is established by the testimony of charles <>. kaiser the laws of pennsylvania allow us to use an accomplice to give evidence ill order that the more guilty parties may he brought to justice and it has been the policy of the law in this state that those who candidly tell all they know of particular crimes cannot be subjected to the same punishment as the other parties you have led a very had life such as is bound to lead to ii bitter end the wreck has come and you can blame only vourself the only reason 1 accept yom plea in the lesser offense is because you ren dered valuable aid in convicting clein nier the maximum punishment of the law does nut begin to reach the gravity of the offense cannot for a moment reduce the sentence the sen tence of the court is that you pay a one of 600 costs of prosecution l\>lltli tin mimler trull the discussion in the i'nited stale senate on the annexation of hawaii has been unusually instructive and able senator white from california dwell 1 great length and strength on the im portance of orrposition to the measnre it may be said that he is nearer to the islands than any other senator the man whose word however ill have more commanding authority among sen atom and reasonable reading reflecting citi/ens is justin s mun-iii of ver mont he has been a national reprc nt;ii ive for in er in yean and n senator for over 30 years from an intelligent northern state mr morrlll says that soon two senators will come knocking at the door asking admission that cannot incur until hawaii lias grown to statehood and when a state will be as much entitled to representatives and senators as wisconsin with her islands in lake superior as separate and dis tinct from the state as hawaii from america though not by so many stat u te miles hawaii is the connecting link between america and china and its location led to early establishment of numerous european and american set tiers and the rapid rise of a very exten sive trade and forms a common centre to the principal whaling grounds of the north pacific my cousin thomas adanuon represented our government there for many years and 1 had much information from him the hawaii islands and cuba have been topics of discussion for a half century or more and the diplomatic letters of daniel webster of april s 1852 an-1 of ed ward everett of dec 1 ls.'>2 show how this nation regarded the proposed tri partite treaty with france england and the united states suggested by france that neither nation should steal cuba nor let any other nation do it and that our people refused to enter into any treaty upon the subject hut laid down the doctrine of friendly relations with all nations but entangling alliances with none it is said that japan objects to us as a foster mother to hawaii yes well great britain objected to our starting nut on our own hook too away back 100 years ago but that did not scare americans in the days of old adams and washington ! death is an element to !>¦ taken into consideration in all political movements since the state convention a judge nf the so-called superior court has died and now the delegates must be recon vened to nominate another judge thus the great destroyer make room for office seekers as well as fur other rivals our ticket then will be to vote for a governor lieutenant governor two judges of the superior court il judge of our county sheriff treasurer coroner surveyor district attorney director of the poor senator and live assemblymen if governor hastings should nominate and appoint a judge he would most likely he accepted by the republicans as porter has been accepted who was thus appointed to fill a vacancy it is likely that the appointee will be taken from the late judge wickham's region of the state the only name i hear mentioned as that of one likely to he nominated by the democrats against judge weand who will i think have no opposition among the republicans is that of jac ob v gotwals formerly district attor ney a native of lower friends he has lately been busy organizing farmers institutes and in promoting all the interests of honest husbandry he is as much esteemed as an intelligent farmer as an incompatible legislator and the people will bo as proud to renominate him as thev were on the 20th to renominate wanger captain win w potts of swcdeland and i u haldeman of ilarlcysvillo candidates for the legislature also man ifested their great interest in the cause we all have so deeply at heart and the delegates and visitors gave them a hearty reception at newtown thomas 11 barker came as a delegate and per formed bis legislature there were many1 candi dates who were there to greet old friends and make new ones houser of ardmore and light from con shohocken und webster for sheriff white hallowell and hrownback for postollice address many a candi date is not known to he in the held till the delegates assemble the day of the convent ion names are often incorrect ly published and especially middle names and in one
