ambler gazette vol xv.-no 4j ambler pa november 11 18h7 81.25 a ykaij norristown letter ^\» to tin shiing f knlibltn cmbmmh ftiiir qnme ijaws ttu pavlsv cgwiwwi ^ wlmt hwi tlioy 1 with tlmm orknili n'okhis'iuw v nnv r i lieiir a great deal of discussion about the game laws which like nil other leg islation we lin<l ever changing never improving lint perpetually confusing and even wen educated citizens fall into error as to their rights to buy and sell rabbits at this time well newspaper law is dangerous unless it be obtained from the fountain head and not copied from irresponsible authority there is a great difference between buying and sell ing rabbits and hunting nnd killing them and there is a vast difference also in the mode of killing a very well in formed man in the science of bis pro fession undertook to tell me that a man could not even sell a rabbit now and when i smiled he said there was a law passed by the last legislature forbidding the sale of these animals and also cer tain other animals when i told him that it was our business to get all the laws aa fast as they were ground out and to keep ourselves postetl on all subjects relating to the laws and to the interpre tation thereof by the judiciary and that i spoke from the book he told me that his informantavas a market man from whom he wanted to buy my replv to this was that we did not get our law from the market house or the newspapers but the market men and the newspapers can get the law from us and we get it from the statutes he said that he always thought that the law was common sense yes i said common law is founded on common sense but statute law on the will oi the legislature and this will was very variable there is a difference be tween game and domestic animals there are seven pagesof the act of june 4 1897 for the protection of gamo and game mammals and game birds and no game ster is safe who does not supply himself with a copy of the law taken from the authentic book or with legal advice from a man who reads and uiiderstunds what he reads many constables and squires pretend to give advice who do not tinder stand the law's language and the terms employed or the old law which is not affected by the new to point out all these things would require a book of very considerable dimensions but rab bits and all other animal hint come un der the game laws may he shot at only certain seasons but this docs not pre vent the domesticating of certain animals for domestic consumption the law is intended to stop the indiscriminate and wasteful destruction of animal life for sport or gain it is time the laws were simplified on this subject they ought to be brief plain and emphatic as th rrvm commandments you cannot hunt vbviits with ferrets but you can gun for them from nov 1 to decl 15 the law relating to fishing is also confusing and prosecutions are very numerous against our people who fail to take the precau tion to thoroughly inform themselves on these subjects the law allows squirrels to be taken from oct 15 to dec 15 in each year but game law s are dangerous we are having a vast amount of paving going on just now in norristown we get o,<)00,()00 bricks from mcavoy on the sehuylkill at perkiomen junction at a cost of 10 per 1000 delivered we calculate these will cover from 40 to 60 squares or blocks in the borough the only trouble about these permanent or solid street surfaces is that in our town they are liable to be constantly torn up to repair some gah or water pipe or sewer or trench underneath swede street has not yet been paved with these bricks — made of powdered rocks and not of com mon clay — but has recently been repair ed rolled and completed in a most sub stantial manner but lo on saturday morning men were engaged in front of district attorney strassburger's office digging down through the compact road bed to change or intersect some water pipe or connection with the sewer ! the bor ough first of all should see to it that the subterranean pipe and sewer system is a completion permanency and fixture and not waste no much time and money and so disfigure the highway by these fre quent tearing up operations detrimental to travel but conducive to debt and dan ger i need not say to you that the election passed off here without a ripple the day was the dullest of the year but the evening was celebrated for hallowe'en and that beat anything ever seun since the days of the roman saturnalia the election was not mentioned so far as new york was concerned that result was dismounted as soon as henry george died when both of the great parties are divided and each has two candidates there is a fighting chance for either but when the republicans have two and the democrats one the democrats win of course and vice versa liut at the pan demonium on tuesday night thousands and thousands of people lined main street from end to end men women and children were dressed in fancy cos tumes and disguised under false aces riding running dancing blowing horns and cutting up such hiyli fantastic tricks that t lie tens of thousands who thronged the sidewalks laughed and i shouted as if by home overpowering spell enthused against their wits it qettt the jews and heal the election all hollow and t&jlll the grotesque devices pantomimes afd illustrations to cause ridlouleand remark kn local or recent events there was not ™ single allusion to the election of the day el tin returns which were in at an eail y hour ! already circulars are coming in upon us from l'ittsbuig and allegheny signed by many members of tint irand army oi the republic urging support to the candidacy of hon win a stone for governor to succeed jonciihm hastings i feel sorry now that there is a clause in the constitution which prevents a gov ernor from succeeding himself for if hastings had the right to run be would poll a vote tai more surprising ami as tounding than that given to swallow for treasurer but we must take the consti tution is il is and stone is a very good man a veritable stone-wall jackson in dcl'eiii-i of the claims ol the eteians of the war ! at the december term of court you may look for some revelations ia the realms i jurisprudence on subjects l have discussed nnd which the authorities ami bosses have hitherto ignored the authorities have arrested and im prisoned l.i/.zie i'ekalb or complicity in the murder of mrs kaiser whose husband has been convicted of the crime and is now in prison awaiting the deci sion of the supreme court on lions of l:iu involved i'.nl they do with her the commonwealth has all the evidence they coo id obtain on the quet-l ion of conspiracy and the jiu charged t he jurv i hat 1 1 lev m list dismiss il from their minds as il fell short of showing any conspiracy now they have nu stronger evidence for liceie deknlb being accused as ii criminal can close her inoiilb ami cannot be compelled to testify upon her own trial the kai ser trial is over it cannot iiffect that for even if the supreme courl should or der a new trial on some error i if the court below that could not be done before next february and lizzie could not be compelled to testify if it were reversed ami if lizzie demands it she must be tried at this december term the com monwealth therefore has a huge elephant on hand u big reward to pay for her apprehension and a big bill of costs mr strassbarger did all he could to obtain lizzie and mr clemmer tit the kaiser trial but they could not then be found other changes of importance some growing out ofthe late election willcome up hints are flying around nnd gossip is busy that there is trouble among the bosses patrick curren the liquor merchant who recently bought the strand build ing above the postoflice on friday pur chased the adjoining jamison property on main street and people are looking forward to the erection of u big hotel oi.n fitiend talking trolley mh«1p on mwer in hip ivnjpr nnni<iimn-a lg to wheelmen tangible shape he regarded the franchise given as a very valuable possession mr s powell childs of plymouth congratulated the people of ambler on their past progress but there has never been anything done in the history of the borough that is of so much importance to the place as this propohcd trol ley road he wanted the line to brunch off the skippack road below blue bell and make a direct line to the hickorytown school house — the tracks to be laid alongside the public road on land that would be donated by the owners at the school house connection could be made with the chestnut hill trolley thence to nor ristown william ii meiggs of centre square favored the route via that village as the most promising in every way mr c.deprefontaine said about every body in hia vicinity favors the trolley would like the company to deal fairly with them mr katz of centre square said the route via his village would be of advant age to both ambler and norristown but lie couldn't see the sense of building a rolley through a country where no body lived solicitor foulke gave it us his opinion that in laying the tracks the line could cross froai one side of the road to the other to pass objecting property holders on motion a committee of three were appointed to secure the right of way from the skippack pike to the hickory town school bouse on the chestnut hill pike the president named thomas butcher s powell childs and chalkley styer general manager douglass of the sehuylkill valley traction company was called on for remarks he said the all important thing is to secure the right of way che people should not be too sanguine of securing a trolley line to norristown as the distance was quite a consideration and companies hud learned that it was expensive to operate lines into the country he urged the people to stand together however and he believed that the desired object could be attained by general consent it was agreed that a clause be inserted in the release stating that the road must be commenced with in nine months and completed within two years otherwise the release to be null and void the meeting then adjourned to con vene on monday evening nov 22 when it is thought that the several committees will be ready to make a report that will be decisive so far as the building of the road is concerned the look-out warning an observer writes the gakbttl as fol lows : in regard to warning people in danger at railroad crossings i have often thought the cry look out which is the usual way of warning has led to disas ter a case i recollect occurred in phil adelphia soon after the introduction of rapid transit an elderly man got out of a car when another car was approach ing from the opposite direction which he ctid not see he started to cross the track when some one called/'look out he stopped right in the middle of the track to look out and was cut down if the warning had been hurry on or come back he might have escaped look out is the worst
