rev j d detrich of white 1 1 1 rslt led in prayer this was followed i iy an address ol welcome by rev lyman i owell nf ambler mr i'mveli s:\iil : i welcome yon t ambler and in the name of its citizens i offer you tin keys to om heart you have shown rood taste iii coming t tho most important town in thii whole we tion larger towns then may be bat not more promising we welcome you because of the 70,000,000 in this country yon farmeri represent two-flfthi of as many of the people m are engaged in profitable occupations our interests are yours because you feed us i ike von moltke's army we travel on ur stomachs nnd therefore we depend upon the men woo feed us you represent in this age of mad and feverish scramble for money place and power those strong linhasting placid elements which under lie all character national as well an in dividual the craze for city life is puss ing men are growing willing now to listen to the message of wordsworth and john burroughs tlmt clean air and un broken tranquillity are better than fever ish brows threadbare nerves and a dis ordered liver city men pre hurrying now as fast as express and trolley car and bicycle can take them back to tho country for the greater part of the year kven if sometimes you grow aweary of the drudgery of the farm and long t move to town don't there is a living f ir you in the country and no more than this — in many cases not this — in the city stay where you are the town will come to you make the most of your institute it is a clearing house for the exchange of expert testimony which you ought to bear the institute represents all that is best and lasting in the farmers life i therefore welcome you its representa tives and i hope in the words of horace that you will late return to the heaven of a country home which some would rather count a less congenial place james q atkinson responded to the address of welcome he said the ques tion of holding an institute at mbler had been discussed frequently in the horsbain farmers club and because tin club had abandoned for the time being tlie holding of district institutes the in bl itu'_e_yyas held at ambler this year ho was proud of the town of ambler hero there are people who spend money for the building up of the borough but there is still room for expansion the speaker remembered his father shearing sheep on his farm in upper dublin and taking the wool to the fulling mill at ambler this was probably the first industrial establishment in ambler too much praise cannot be given the great works of the keasbey fc mattleon company which has figured so largely in the prog ress of the place miss marguerite johnson sang a solo entitled dolly's revenge prof 8 b heiges of york pa v:is tben introduced his subject was treat ment of non-productive orchards he said he was not very familiar with the orchards of this vicinity we have drawn upon our orchards to produce other crops which is injurious corn wheat and other crops exhaust the soil leaving a deficient supply of nutriment for the trees this is the chief cause of non-productive orchards nearly all or chards have an off year in tobacco tomato and bean growing districts there are no off years the cause of off years in orchards in lack of proper treatment an orchard should be used for orchards only look for fruit and fruit alone the speaker had visited an orchard con taining 1 100 trees which netted the own er 20,000 from a london buyer there should be a growth of from eix to eight inches of new wood every year if this does not occur there u a deficien cy of nitrogen the wood making element ijarnvard manure should be used to sup ply tfie deficiency of nitrogen canada beans or clover plowed down is also n remedy phosphate of lime and potash will bring fruit quickly there are three conditions of good growth moisture light and a certain amount of darkness i would notadviue the plowing of an orchard that is non productive you may cut off the small feeding sorts instead apply proper fertilizers in the fall it is not necessary to have an off year in orchards many of the old orchards have too much wood cut out about half of it some orchards are not profitable because certain varie ties will not thrive unless planted with sonic other variety every orchard should be sprayed before the buds begin to swell which will destroy the fungi bordeaux mixture minus paris green is best for the first spraying the second spraying should occur after the blossom has fallen to the ground jftines lj atkinson asked what should lie done with the unprofitable orchard if it should not hi plowed he thought plowing could he done with safely in the fall if done with care if barnyard manure be used he did not think it possible to produce an equal crop each year the ordinary farmer will not spray as he should he is too full of ouuness in oilier lines hut it is impossible to raise fruit successfully without spraying lie did not like the business so he generally got loll n or some oar else to do ii . prof qeo c buti of state college thought thai in the ihst spraying sul phate of copper only could l u.-.-il with good effect i'n i butl spoke on fruits of penn sylvania in \ siting t orchard the state he had noticed that pennsyl vania is nut furnishing her proper pro portion of fruit grown in the united statt win one must make a specialty he rev j d detrich of white 1 1 1 rslt led in prayer this was followed i iy an address ol welcome by rev lyman i owell nf ambler mr i'mveli s:\iil : i welcome yon t ambler and in the name of its citizens i offer you tin keys to om heart you have shown rood taste iii coming t tho most important town in thii whole we tion larger towns then may be bat not more promising we welcome you because of the 70,000,000 in this country yon farmeri represent two-flfthi of as many of the people m are engaged in profitable occupations our interests are yours because you feed us i ike von moltke's army we travel on ur stomachs nnd therefore we depend upon the men woo feed us you represent in this age of mad and feverish scramble for money place and power those strong linhasting placid elements which under lie all character national as well an in dividual the craze for city life is puss ing men are growing willing now to listen to the message of wordsworth and john burroughs tlmt clean air and un broken tranquillity are better than fever ish brows threadbare nerves and a dis ordered liver city men pre hurrying now as fast as express and trolley car and bicycle can take them back to tho country for the greater part of the year kven if sometimes you grow aweary of the drudgery of the farm and long t move to town don't there is a living f ir you in the country and no more than this — in many cases not this — in the city stay where you are the town will come to you make the most of your institute it is a clearing house for the exchange of expert testimony which you ought to bear the institute represents all that is best and lasting in the farmers life i therefore welcome you its representa tives and i hope in the words of horace that you will late return to the heaven of a country home which some would rather count a less congenial place james q atkinson responded to the address of welcome he said the ques tion of holding an institute at mbler had been discussed frequently in the horsbain farmers club and because tin club had abandoned for the time being tlie holding of district institutes the in bl itu'_e_yyas held at ambler this year ho was proud of the town of ambler hero there are people who spend money for the building up of the borough but there is still room for expansion the speaker remembered his father shearing sheep on his farm in upper dublin and taking the wool to the fulling mill at ambler this was probably the first industrial establishment in ambler too much praise cannot be given the great works of the keasbey fc mattleon company which has figured so largely in the prog ress of the place miss marguerite johnson sang a solo entitled dolly's revenge prof 8 b heiges of york pa v:is tben introduced his subject was treat ment of non-productive orchards he said he was not very familiar with the orchards of this vicinity we have drawn upon our orchards to produce other crops which is injurious corn wheat and other crops exhaust the soil leaving a deficient supply of nutriment for the trees this is the chief cause of non-productive orchards nearly all or chards have an off year in tobacco tomato and bean growing districts there are no off years the cause of off years in orchards in lack of proper treatment an orchard should be used for orchards only look for fruit and fruit alone the speaker had visited an orchard con taining 1 100 trees which netted the own er 20,000 from a london buyer there should be a growth of from eix to eight inches of new wood every year if this does not occur there u a deficien cy of nitrogen the wood making element ijarnvard manure should be used to sup ply tfie deficiency of nitrogen canada beans or clover plowed down is also n remedy phosphate of lime and potash will bring fruit quickly there are three conditions of good growth moisture light and a certain amount of darkness i would notadviue the plowing of an orchard that is non productive you may cut off the small feeding sorts instead apply proper fertilizers in the fall it is not necessary to have an off year in orchards many of the old orchards have too much wood cut out about half of it some orchards are not profitable because certain varie ties will not thrive unless planted with sonic other variety every orchard should be sprayed before the buds begin to swell which will destroy the fungi bordeaux mixture minus paris green is best for the first spraying the second spraying should occur after the blossom has fallen to the ground jftines lj atkinson asked what should lie done with the unprofitable orchard if it should not hi plowed he thought plowing could he done with safely in the fall if done with care if barnyard manure be used he did not think it possible to produce an equal crop each year the ordinary farmer will not spray as he should he is too full of ouuness in oilier lines hut it is impossible to raise fruit successfully without spraying lie did not like the business so he generally got loll n or some oar else to do ii . prof qeo c buti of state college thought thai in the ihst spraying sul phate of copper only could l u.-.-il with good effect i'n i butl spoke on fruits of penn sylvania in \ siting t orchard the state he had noticed that pennsyl vania is nut furnishing her proper pro portion of fruit grown in the united statt win one must make a specialty he nmsi love the work one of the principal cojitini i-.u on lot iilll i i in >¦" tnni 4'hip not uoft roads but rough 0hct election time is drawing near shad are in inarkrt there is nothing the matter sny that there are more politicians out of politics today than ever before ask any of them what is new in the political line and they will tell you that they do not know that they are out of politics at the same time they look at you and wink the other eve we have heard of a candidate for the legislature who recently boomed his candidacy by giving a housewarming as we are informed that hon jason sexton has about 75 young lambs we would suggest that he invite his friends to partake of spring lamb mint sauce and green peas now that hon henry d savior is practically out of the senatorial light of montgomery county and as there area number knocking at the door to be slated wouldn't it be a fine chance for a plunger to step in and walk off with the prize miss anna weir entertained a number of
