the ambler gazette vol xvi xo 50 ambler pa november 24 1808 sl.25 a year norristown letter v.x old friend a»nln adelre««p dm ktnrtern tli n.niitnnt l*»n of stonp plnlnril true tiihiiiokiviiik liny ' election norristown nov 21 the newspapers in philadelphia are edited by men who are either niereen ary or ignorant for i have not known in w years that they had i single editor who knew anything about the polities of pennsylvania since the death of that veteran whig gallant old morton mcmlchael of the north american bee the trash m the record of this morning tinder the caption the hal lot law and caucus " it speaks of the republicans in chester county moving for the machine on a technicality to prevent certain men from being counted m why the writer of tlmt article ought to have known that it is in this county of montgomery where the demo crats through ii l dickinson esq inaugurated that movement whose machine was that '.' i admit as ever.1 intelligent man must that the bnl'ot law is a terrible abomination and ad mits of no acceptance in civilization or christendom but when an editor of philadelphia comes out and charges the dcfeitid republicans with being in a machine to cheat he should at least be kind enough to say that the denin crats commenced it and they had a right to 1 admit for the law is per fectly plain that 8 man's name shall not appear more than onie on the official ballot this is the curse of the statute not any machine that i know of for the bal let bill was first proposed by the demo crats for they had ail idea that the large republican majority was the result of some supervision of business men in terested in the tariff when the truth is that ever since the new ballot bill has been in force the republican majoritv has grown lamer all this talk and trash about a ma chine — 1 use no quotation marks and 1 desire you not to insert a stioke — is the veriest balderdash the ledger of philadelphia said that quay nominat ed jenks and actually in an editorial said in the face of sill tbe facts and truth of history that colonel stone's nomination could not have been made possible except for the personal demand of m s quay why the truth is the soldiers and members of the republi can party through the state ran awav with the nomination for stone and quay and all his cohorts could not con trol it it was like tbe renomination of curtin for governor it was settled among the leaders that curtin was to lie sent on a foreign mission and nol be a candidate fir re-election but montgomery county led oil for him and other counties followed and it could not be tupped so it was with stone in 98 the people demanded him and it is a lie that juav demanded him the truth is quay could not stop it and i know it i sic that we are to have a thanksgiv ing day on thursday 1 presume some prominent place will be selected where the gifts will be given out and the thanks will be uttered if there is any abomination above the ballot hill it is this system of compulsory laws of piety and thanksgiving let people he thank ful from the exuberance of joyful hearts and not from the tyranny of public law either in a republic or in an oligar chy only a few years ago a minis ter in new york heat bis child to death because the babe would not pray perhaps in another and a better world that child may hand that father drops to cool bis burning lips every day is a thanksgiving day to him who has received anything for which to he thankful if some gener ous and noble soul in ambler would leave me 10 kill 1 would buy a turkey and extend thanks to the donor but mr editor i will compromise with your consent : if instead some amblcr ite will only send me 10,11(10 turkeys i will take them and render due thanks keeping large pieces of the white meat for the fairest purest and best resident along the north pennsylvania railroad in your region 1 see that the new united slabs of central america will hold its iirst elec tion nn sunday dec 4 1808 this re public promises to occupy a prominent point ami to hold a superior power on the american continent mexico has been a slow silver country but has not assumed or rather attained to that stand ard among the nations whicli commands attention and respect certainly not obedience this central republic wi be a powerful factor in the future it may be the arbiter of nations like switzerland and belgium have been away over there at the foot of the pyrannees between prance and spam hi'ts the little republic of andorra 1000 years old and indeed scarcely larger than norristown and yet front the days of frederick the ireat has exerted an influence for good far more than any of the bonaparws ever bestowed on the european world and without cirnage aye guiltless of their country's blood ! it seems strange to many people who are not posted in history sacred and secular that elections are held in france spain mexico and in this new central american republic and other nations on sunday the reason for this i christian countries is that sunday is legal holiday by statute in these sev al nations sunday with the ignorant icople is often confused with the sab lath day of the jews but the old jew ish law was according to tbe christian religion abolished or superseded by tbe joining of the christ and in the new testament containing the gospels and epistles of the men who wrote up the new religion certain rites and ceremon ies were eliminated and nowhere in the new testament i there any uomuiand to keep holy the sabbath day 1 have read every line and word in tin new testament as well as the decision of hon john m read of the supreme court of pennsylvania in the cage of sparhawk against the citv l'assenger railway company ami sunday is a le gal holiday under the new or christian religion uad is set apart as a day of rent entirely distinct from the old n*h hath day which is saturdav lint i will not dwell on this human life is short and so is manv a religion the understanding seems to he that john k li<_'hl the newly elected uher iff.wlll appoint charles johnson for out side deputy and mr collision thepitt nil deputy for inside work in thesher itl's office the popularity of charlie johnson makes the appointment strong and 1 have no doubt collision will be content with inside woik they lire all competent men and tin new sheriff says he will make the burden as light us possible on hie poor ami unfortunate i set no mention of any bankrupt case under the new law the people do not understand the merits of the statute passed by congress it is ambiguous some man is to publish a book by order of the government to explain the bankrupt lawl what nonsense all any man needs is hie statute itself and the benefits thereof if he he unfortunate il !• flilk.mi centre joseph last calling on koliert kjjiir and family a nov 10 in tins paper the writer milkes no pretence id wide knowledge of the sub ject ii has seemed to him that it might have been better to refer this i|iiesl ion to some teachers of wide <¦>;¦ perlence or to some one who has made this branch of school work a special study but since the assignment has been made as a director interested in all brunches of education i prepaiedthe paper lid from the standpoint of teach er director or parent but us a student of ebildlife and if verv many of the conclusions reached flo not meet with your approval or f they seem out of the general line of thought of this topic change if it be possible your point of view and then perhaps even if you do not yet flgl , you will sec that there is n foundation nt least upon which to build our argument let me bay thai i believe many di rectors mid visitors make more mistakes in their estimation of discipline than in any ether matter many things are honored by the title of discipline that have no right to the name manv a teacher is praised because she is a good disciplinarian when she is a perfect failure just along that i inc it may be true that the room is perfectly quiet : it may be true you never see dis order in the room it may be true that in the school drill there is perfect act ion and no blunders vet i contend there may bo this nnd yet poor disci pline io into another room there is a hum of voices there is a certain free dom ; there is perhaps a tendency on the part of the pupils to lnngb at every trilling ocurrence and you go home nnd sigh and say well mi ps ii is b good teacher but her discipline is so poor when perhaps it is the best in your school let us approach this subject fairly first let us learn the meaning of the word itself from the latin root disco to learn we receive a large number of kindred words for instance disciple one who learns discipline noun train ing learning education instruction disclipine verb to teach to instruct to educate to govern to teach rules and regulations and accu8tom to orders and subordination as troops in an army to correct to punish o advance and pre pare by instruction etc now the prime object of a school is to teach to instruct to train discipline includes teaching or instructing an well las keeping order and the best disci pline is that which with order and nominal rather than absolute quiet best succeeds in training mind hands and hflbits that teacher is the best disciplinarian who best awakens in the heart and mind of her pupil the love of knowledge ami orderly habits of procedure now our question is how to obtain a well disciplined school room well if ihe parents will pardon me it is just about a generation too late to do much to help the teachers now uuch r our su pervision for two reasons first disci pline must begin at home and the child before it enters school should he trained to obey audio respect those in authori ty the domineering overbearing boy or the petted spoiled waited upon bny or girl will not lake kindly to disci pline at school and the effects of schoo training are vitiated or entirely dispel ed by parents who wait upon and cater to a spoiled boy or girl in tbe home in the second place i fear we can d little with th'e great majority of teach ers who have by training and habi mistaken a quiet school room for i disciplined school room who have made much of order without having that order mean something who havi been laboring under the idea fcsterei often by directors that if the childrei were quiet walked on tiptoe and every thing moved as if instead of living breathing creiiturcs.full of life vitality vivacity and fun the teachers had re duced them to the plane of automaton or wax fluureti on show they had gone discipline the first step then ii obtaining discipline.for there is but one kind is to train the coming parents and hope t hal some lime in the sweet by and by we will have a generation of parents who will value so highly th future of their children that the whin ing willies the saucy sams and tin domineering picks will disappear or upon the iirst whine or sign of rebellion the patter of the shingle or slipper of the irate mother or father will leave be hind memories if not sweet at least sweeting to the whole after life if we are to have discipline ill school the scholars must first be brought into such a relation with the teacher that thi teacher can begin not merely to train the obi id to obey to study to learn hut can begin at once to make disciples nf informing mind for the of them iu the sense or really forming the great duties of life how are we to obtain a well disciplin ed school room under present conditions is a vital question a vexed question hut not one impossible of solution iu order to obtain a well disciplined school room we must have well disci plined teachers teachers well trained well drilled and equipped for their work we as directors inuht get away from the tendency so evident in many lutricts of electing teachers simply ou diplomas or upon the mere basis of educational standards more must be made of temperament of adaptability f habit of ambition io advance to that teacher who is teaching simplv to bridge over the time between school and marriage or who teaches be cause il is a genteel occupation or who spends in society her evening and somes nervous and irritable to school in tin1 morning who is of a highly excita l>le temperament discipline is imposs i)le but to the teacher who teaches beubuse she lovoi her woik ild pupils to the teacher who holds her work first hid sacrifices pleasure for it success h inevitable in securing our teachers we muht mi'lecl with gruut can uuviog n mind not merely menial qualities ions but physical social and teinjtcru have a well disciplined room alan i poor teacher 1 do not knu'.v hut i will try to help he if i cnn the teacher must ss she l"l_'iii her work begin with the smnnince of liparty support of principal and directors in all her undertakings she must begin 1 hired that her plans afld idefls will be allowed to mntnre that behind her supporting her are tin powers thai he lin you know that many teachers are hampered and lire falling because old rules and old rpfriilationk old idea are imcredly fnllnwml and obeyed the teacher learns that it ii the custom in our school to dn bo and so " it is tbe custom in our school not to punish not to reward not to deal with scholar too hastily and the poor teacher is afraid to begin her work on her own plan and simply follows in old ruts and nld tracks becanse not nssured of sup port let every teacher be granted liberty of action and method then we will have made the iirst step now after the teacher has the hearty support of the school officials let her know that all children are free nnd equal the discipline of many a room is poor because in that room is john jones or mary miller whose parents have influence while john and mary lack breeding and brains so the child ren in the room fnil to obey because these two or even one is not punished often undue favor is shown in advanc ing or promoting some poor dullard be cause the teachers are given to under stand that this child must be advanced or must be allowed certain liberties because he or she is the child of john smith who will make a fuss if they are harshly dealt with or not promoted if you want a well disciplined room do away witli all this let there be a fair held and no favors and then there will bean incentive to work both on the part of the bright as well nu the dull pupil many a pupil makes the teacher 8 life miserable because his parent has a pull which unfortunately is not often enough connected with tin1 ear of his offspring if there is to be good discipline in the school room there must be change in the order and in the method for a year i have been preaching the gospel iif change for sabbath schools having as my text never twice alike this must be applied to the school room if it is to be well disciplined take five minutes to read a storv bearing on the lesson : have a song now and then interjected try haying recitations through all of one session without the scholars opening hooks resolve your spelling class into a bee have a history class recite by getting one boy or girl to begin the story then at a signal lor another to take it up and continue until the entire story is told try the same in a similar plan in literature by hav ing under your supervision one of the scholars teach a iessuii while you sit in liis place try having tin1 ciass with best averages for day or week marked ou the blackboard for the ensuing in terval do you know that there is nothing so wearing as the continued routine of duties'1 break up your work in this way let the changes come unexpectedly and thev will surely help again if the teacher wants to have a well disciplined school room she must gain the respect and affection of the children you may not care teachers for the children but if you want to suc ceed you must they may seem very crooked little saplings you are set to straighten but you must look rather at the possibilities of the future than at the present crooked stick-like form if the children yet to know that a teacher cares for them lexes them discipline will be assured let the pu pils once learn that your care for them is merely the means tn obtain so much per month o that you are b glad when the day is over and to use your own expression you are free nnd your life w'll he a burden and even beneath the enforced silence and obedience will he rebellion and dislike love is the greatest thing in the world love is the supreme thing iu school discipline another means of obtaining a well disciplined school room is to take into consideration the individual child with his individualities < ine of the most prolific sources of poor discipline is the result of trying to deal with the scholars as a class and not getting down to the real unit personal experience hag taught me that to deal with even a congregation of adults us many teach ers try to deal with their schools would simplv mean a hasty exit from the church of which 1 might be pastor there is mrs simpson who demands certain attentions who comes and is interested only as i am interested iu her while i would boril mrs marjoram jf i attempted to show the same ' care there is the boy full of you have their children strong stalwart manly „„, -- mischief but with that brave fearless truthfulness shining from his eve he is in mischief but w ill you linn as vou would with leal with the boy who never meets yojur eye who does all lis mischief behind your back and whom you are afraid to trust would ou tiihiiiokiviiik liny ' election norristown nov 21 the newspapers in philadelphia are edited by men who are either niereen ary or ignorant for i have not known in w years that they had i single editor who knew anything about the polities of pennsylvania since the death of that veteran whig gallant old morton mcmlchael of the north american bee the trash m the record of this morning tinder the caption the hal lot law and caucus " it speaks of the republicans in chester county moving for the machine on a technicality to prevent certain men from being counted m why the writer of tlmt article ought to have known that it is in this county of montgomery where the demo crats through ii l dickinson esq inaugurated that movement whose machine was that '.' i admit as ever.1 intelligent man must that the bnl'ot law is a terrible abomination and ad mits of no acceptance in civilization or christendom but when an editor of philadelphia comes out and charges the dcfeitid republicans with being in a machine to cheat he should at least be kind enough to say that the denin crats commenced it and they had a right to 1 admit for the law is per fectly plain that 8 man's name shall not appear more than onie on the official ballot this is the curse of the statute not any machine that i know of for the bal let bill was first proposed by the demo crats for they had ail idea that the large republican majority was the result of some supervision of business men in terested in the tariff when the truth is that ever since the new ballot bill has been in force the republican majoritv has grown lamer all this talk and trash about a ma chine — 1 use no quotation marks and 1 desire you not to insert a stioke — is the veriest balderdash the ledger of philadelphia said that quay nominat ed jenks and actually in an editorial said in the face of sill tbe facts and truth of history that colonel stone's nomination could not have been made possible except for the personal demand of m s quay why the truth is the soldiers and members of the republi can party through the state ran awav with the nomination for stone and quay and all his cohorts could not con trol it it was like tbe renomination of curtin for governor it was settled among the leaders that curtin was to lie sent on a foreign mission and nol be a candidate fir re-election but montgomery county led oil for him and other counties followed and it could not be tupped so it was with stone in 98 the people demanded him and it is a lie that juav demanded him the truth is quay could not stop it and i know it i sic that we are to have a thanksgiv ing day on thursday 1 presume some prominent place will be selected where the gifts will be given out and the thanks will be uttered if there is any abomination above the ballot hill it is this system of compulsory laws of piety and thanksgiving let people he thank ful from the exuberance of joyful hearts and not from the tyranny of public law either in a republic or in an oligar chy only a few years ago a minis ter in new york heat bis child to death because the babe would not pray perhaps in another and a better world that child may hand that father drops to cool bis burning lips every day is a thanksgiving day to him who has received anything for which to he thankful if some gener ous and noble soul in ambler would leave me 10 kill 1 would buy a turkey and extend thanks to the donor but mr editor i will compromise with your consent : if instead some amblcr ite will only send me 10,11(10 turkeys i will take them and render due thanks keeping large pieces of the white meat for the fairest purest and best resident along the north pennsylvania railroad in your region 1 see that the new united slabs of central america will hold its iirst elec tion nn sunday dec 4 1808 this re public promises to occupy a prominent point ami to hold a superior power on the american continent mexico has been a slow silver country but has not assumed or rather attained to that stand ard among the nations whicli commands attention and respect certainly not obedience this central republic wi be a powerful factor in the future it may be the arbiter of nations like switzerland and belgium have been away over there at the foot of the pyrannees between prance and spam hi'ts the little republic of andorra 1000 years old and indeed scarcely larger than norristown and yet front the days of frederick the ireat has exerted an influence for good far more than any of the bonaparws ever bestowed on the european world and without cirnage aye guiltless of their country's blood ! it seems strange to many people who are not posted in history sacred and secular that elections are held in france spain mexico and in this new central american republic and other nations on sunday the reason for this i christian countries is that sunday is legal holiday by statute in these sev al nations sunday with the ignorant icople is often confused with the sab lath day of the jews but the old jew ish law was according to tbe christian religion abolished or superseded by tbe joining of the christ and in the new testament containing the gospels and epistles of the men who wrote up the new religion certain rites and ceremon ies were eliminated and nowhere in the new testament i there any uomuiand to keep holy the sabbath day 1 have read every line and word in tin new testament as well as the decision of hon john m read of the supreme court of pennsylvania in the cage of sparhawk against the citv l'assenger railway company ami sunday is a le gal holiday under the new or christian religion uad is set apart as a day of rent entirely distinct from the old n*h hath day which is saturdav lint i will not dwell on this human life is short and so is manv a religion the understanding seems to he that john k li<_'hl the newly elected uher iff.wlll appoint charles johnson for out side deputy and mr collision thepitt nil deputy for inside work in thesher itl's office the popularity of charlie johnson makes the appointment strong and 1 have no doubt collision will be content with inside woik they lire all competent men and tin new sheriff says he will make the burden as light us possible on hie poor ami unfortunate i set no mention of any bankrupt case under the new law the people do not understand the merits of the statute passed by congress it is ambiguous some man is to publish a book by order of the government to explain the bankrupt lawl what nonsense all any man needs is hie statute itself and the benefits thereof if he he unfortunate il better to refer this i|iiesl ion to some teachers of wide <¦>;¦ perlence or to some one who has made this branch of school work a special study but since the assignment has been made as a director interested in all brunches of education i prepaiedthe paper lid from the standpoint of teach er director or parent but us a student of ebildlife and if verv many of the conclusions reached flo not meet with your approval or f they seem out of the general line of thought of this topic change if it be possible your point of view and then perhaps even if you do not yet flgl , you will sec that there is n foundation nt least upon which to build our argument let me bay thai i believe many di rectors mid visitors make more mistakes in their estimation of discipline than in any ether matter many things are honored by the title of discipline that have no right to the name manv a teacher is praised because she is a good disciplinarian when she is a perfect failure just along that i inc it may be true that the room is perfectly quiet : it may be true you never see dis order in the room it may be true that in the school drill there is perfect act ion and no blunders vet i contend there may bo this nnd yet poor disci pline io into another room there is a hum of voices there is a certain free dom ; there is perhaps a tendency on the part of the pupils to lnngb at every trilling ocurrence and you go home nnd sigh and say well mi ps ii is b good teacher but her discipline is so poor when perhaps it is the best in your school let us approach this subject fairly first let us learn the meaning of the word itself from the latin root disco to learn we receive a large number of kindred words for instance disciple one who learns discipline noun train ing learning education instruction disclipine verb to teach to instruct to educate to govern to teach rules and regulations and accu8tom to orders and subordination as troops in an army to correct to punish o advance and pre pare by instruction etc now the prime object of a school is to teach to instruct to train discipline includes teaching or instructing an well las keeping order and the best disci pline is that which with order and nominal rather than absolute quiet best succeeds in training mind hands and hflbits that teacher is the best disciplinarian who best awakens in the heart and mind of her pupil the love of knowledge ami orderly habits of procedure now our question is how to obtain a well disciplined school room well if ihe parents will pardon me it is just about a generation too late to do much to help the teachers now uuch r our su pervision for two reasons first disci pline must begin at home and the child before it enters school should he trained to obey audio respect those in authori ty the domineering overbearing boy or the petted spoiled waited upon bny or girl will not lake kindly to disci pline at school and the effects of schoo training are vitiated or entirely dispel ed by parents who wait upon and cater to a spoiled boy or girl in tbe home in the second place i fear we can d little with th'e great majority of teach ers who have by training and habi mistaken a quiet school room for i disciplined school room who have made much of order without having that order mean something who havi been laboring under the idea fcsterei often by directors that if the childrei were quiet walked on tiptoe and every thing moved as if instead of living breathing creiiturcs.full of life vitality vivacity and fun the teachers had re duced them to the plane of automaton or wax fluureti on show they had gone discipline the first step then ii obtaining discipline.for there is but one kind is to train the coming parents and hope t hal some lime in the sweet by and by we will have a generation of parents who will value so highly th future of their children that the whin ing willies the saucy sams and tin domineering picks will disappear or upon the iirst whine or sign of rebellion the patter of the shingle or slipper of the irate mother or father will leave be hind memories if not sweet at least sweeting to the whole after life if we are to have discipline ill school the scholars must first be brought into such a relation with the teacher that thi teacher can begin not merely to train the obi id to obey to study to learn hut can begin at once to make disciples nf informing mind for the of them iu the sense or really forming the great duties of life how are we to obtain a well disciplin ed school room under present conditions is a vital question a vexed question hut not one impossible of solution iu order to obtain a well disciplined school room we must have well disci plined teachers teachers well trained well drilled and equipped for their work we as directors inuht get away from the tendency so evident in many lutricts of electing teachers simply ou diplomas or upon the mere basis of educational standards more must be made of temperament of adaptability f habit of ambition io advance to that teacher who is teaching simplv to bridge over the time between school and marriage or who teaches be cause il is a genteel occupation or who spends in society her evening and somes nervous and irritable to school in tin1 morning who is of a highly excita l>le temperament discipline is imposs i)le but to the teacher who teaches beubuse she lovoi her woik ild pupils to the teacher who holds her work first hid sacrifices pleasure for it success h inevitable in securing our teachers we muht mi'lecl with gruut can uuviog n mind not merely menial qualities ions but physical social and teinjtcru have a well disciplined room alan i poor teacher 1 do not knu'.v hut i will try to help he if i cnn the teacher must ss she l"l_'iii her work begin with the smnnince of liparty support of principal and directors in all her undertakings she must begin 1 hired that her plans afld idefls will be allowed to mntnre that behind her supporting her are tin powers thai he lin you know that many teachers are hampered and lire falling because old rules and old rpfriilationk old idea are imcredly fnllnwml and obeyed the teacher learns that it ii the custom in our school to dn bo and so " it is tbe custom in our school not to punish not to reward not to deal with scholar too hastily and the poor teacher is afraid to begin her work on her own plan and simply follows in old ruts and nld tracks becanse not nssured of sup port let every teacher be granted liberty of action and method then we will have made the iirst step now after the teacher has the hearty support of the school officials let her know that all children are free nnd equal the discipline of many a room is poor because in that room is john jones or mary miller whose parents have influence while john and mary lack breeding and brains so the child ren in the room fnil to obey because these two or even one is not punished often undue favor is shown in advanc ing or promoting some poor dullard be cause the teachers are given to under stand that this child must be advanced or must be allowed certain liberties because he or she is the child of john smith who will make a fuss if they are harshly dealt with or not promoted if you want a well disciplined room do away witli all this let there be a fair held and no favors and then there will bean incentive to work both on the part of the bright as well nu the dull pupil many a pupil makes the teacher 8 life miserable because his parent has a pull which unfortunately is not often enough connected with tin1 ear of his offspring if there is to be good discipline in the school room there must be change in the order and in the method for a year i have been preaching the gospel iif change for sabbath schools having as my text never twice alike this must be applied to the school room if it is to be well disciplined take five minutes to read a storv bearing on the lesson : have a song now and then interjected try haying recitations through all of one session without the scholars opening hooks resolve your spelling class into a bee have a history class recite by getting one boy or girl to begin the story then at a signal lor another to take it up and continue until the entire story is told try the same in a similar plan in literature by hav ing under your supervision one of the scholars teach a iessuii while you sit in liis place try having tin1 ciass with best averages for day or week marked ou the blackboard for the ensuing in terval do you know that there is nothing so wearing as the continued routine of duties'1 break up your work in this way let the changes come unexpectedly and thev will surely help again if the teacher wants to have a well disciplined school room she must gain the respect and affection of the children you may not care teachers for the children but if you want to suc ceed you must they may seem very crooked little saplings you are set to straighten but you must look rather at the possibilities of the future than at the present crooked stick-like form if the children yet to know that a teacher cares for them lexes them discipline will be assured let the pu pils once learn that your care for them is merely the means tn obtain so much per month o that you are b glad when the day is over and to use your own expression you are free nnd your life w'll he a burden and even beneath the enforced silence and obedience will he rebellion and dislike love is the greatest thing in the world love is the supreme thing iu school discipline another means of obtaining a well disciplined school room is to take into consideration the individual child with his individualities < ine of the most prolific sources of poor discipline is the result of trying to deal with the scholars as a class and not getting down to the real unit personal experience hag taught me that to deal with even a congregation of adults us many teach ers try to deal with their schools would simplv mean a hasty exit from the church of which 1 might be pastor there is mrs simpson who demands certain attentions who comes and is interested only as i am interested iu her while i would boril mrs marjoram jf i attempted to show the same ' care there is the boy full of you have their children strong stalwart manly „„, -- mischief but with that brave fearless truthfulness shining from his eve he is in mischief but w ill you linn as vou would with leal with the boy who never meets yojur eye who does all lis mischief behind your back and whom you are afraid to trust would ou deal with either if those cases as you would with the crying whining whimperer who is always being imposed ipon who complain continually thai some one hit him or pinched him or xiok his appl >, or
