The rejjnlar mouthly lueetiug of Ambler toroofih council was litld JVlouday eveuiuj,' with Mevsrs. Shoe¬ maker, Res, Kuse, Jeukius, McCleau nUd Hartou aud Ur, Fine iu atieud- nuce. The iiiinutcs of Oct. 7 were read ^nd approved. Mr. Kose, of the highway commit¬ tee, reporied that tiic sirett vi'orl; is progrefetiug. The uew work ou Forest aTeuue is about comiiUiled. ,Tlie gut. , . . - ters are yet to grade. Matiisou aveuui.' [ informed and Greeuwoud avcuue are sioued aud partially rolled. Wcrk lias beeu started on Butler aveuue from Liudeuwold avenue to York street. The stoue wall from Kose Valley creek bridge aloug Mrs. Hart's line to Mr. Heckler's pro¬ perties is comploted. filled iu at the back aud the gutter exteuded tu ilie creek. Work will shonly be commeuo¬ ed on Liudeuwold aveuue. The gutter stones are oue-third relaid. .\11 the property owners ou this btteet, except two, Messrs. Lougsireth- aud Martiu, have agrf ed to relay gutters. Mr. Mar¬ tin's gntter stoues are badly brokeu. Regarding tbe projecterl wall on Mrs. Hart's property, along the north side pf Bntlei aveuue, Mr. Rose slated he believes it to be the general feeling of council that a till ot earth to retain tbe citrb, sidewalk and street wonld be better,- The wall will cost abont $500, and it is felc that Mrs, Hart, from pnrely sentimental reasons, is putting the borongh at this expeuse. 'Vei. ou Forest avenue, the borongh has re¬ frained from doing ueedful gratiing (hereon to accommodate her. The drive¬ way from her property to the street is too high, allowing water to wash one and across the street, thus tearing away the surface If council insists the gutter here wonld have to be rebnilt aud driveway graded dowu and recou- strucied. Dr. Fine, of the finance committee, reported the boud of Wm. O. Evans, road coutractor, in the sum of lao,018, given by the United Security company, of Baltimore, Md, Security was ac¬ cepted by conncil. Mr. McOleau reporteti Leidy B. Heckler's desire to secure street lights u Heeler street and Ins williuguess to edi^e tiiat highway to the borough. Mr.R8rt9u r^j^pcrted iwo arrests dur- •*ctbe ou Butler 'ave- ..^^^ anffltref^t straigliteued. Mr, HariSIWiso reported there isuo preseut nec.essiiy ot employing the speeiai of- fiiers fru .Saidurny uights or holidays. Mr. JfUkius reported bnilding jire- mits issued lO L. fi. Heckler for fonr houses aud Dr.Fiue'sstable.amouuting to $9. -Mr. .TeubiUr also stated he had endeavored to iu'erview Mr. Heckler respecting tbe five houses ou Heckler street for which uo permits have beeu takeu out. uu e.xainiuatiou it was found Mr Heckler had taken ont 16 permits iu 1904, three iu 1905 and three iu 1906. The committee was cou¬ tinned with instrui.'iious to secnre tiettlemenc from Mr. Heckler prior to the next meet iug. The treasurer reuorted a balauce of 137,371.08 on liamKalso $4430 paid into the sinking fund, also receipt of lib.GO from Delaware aud .Atlantic Telephone compauy for pole lax. Regarding the responsibility for the relayiug of gutters on Liudeuwold avenne the solicitor ruled that if stones i had beeu laid to the proper grade and are in perfeot conditiou the borough canuot compel property owners to re¬ lay same, bnt if the stoues are brokeu aud iu bad condition all that is legally necessary is for the borough to notify owners. Council theu instructed the highway comnnittee to take uecessary aotiou iu this case Mr, Rose staled he had requesteid bids on the erectiou of the retaining wall along a portion of Mrg, Hart's pro¬ perty, bnt was not sure snch work is desired by couucil He had reqoest- ed Mrs, Hart's attorney. H. H,'yotnm. to be Jireseut. The malter was referred to Solicitor Foblke for opinion aud he requested time to go iuto the matter. Oonncil then decided to meet next Monday night to receive the ruling. Bills'amounting to |.507,24 were or¬ dered paid, A commnnication was received from J. E. Underwood asking for a Ure ping abont Park aud Mattisou avennes was referred to the fire committee with in struotions to report at next meetiug. There were two sealed bids received for the bnilding of the stoue wall.they were laid ou the table unopened. Mr. Rose stated that owing to an oversight Ihe specifications for the work on Reiffs Mill road. South Main street and Mt. Pleasant aveune, were noj completed, alihougl. on his dranght he had provided for the macadam work ou the first sireet to be 12 feet wide aud four inches deep; ou tne second. 14 feet wide and six inclies deep, and on the third, 12 feet wide and tour inches ep. It was therefore decided to readvertise for bids, same to be teudered uext Mouday eveuiug. On Mr, Rote's motiou the chairman of the highway committee was required to pay the expenses accruing to the borough because of the error. Engineer Gillin reported that Mr. Evans has completed 35 per cent, of the street gradiug aud 37 per cent, of the macadamizing, with the excejitiuu of Lindenwold and Bntler avenues, uiak¬ iug a conservative estimate 2a [ler ceut., 80 that payment of -22 per cent, of 80 per ceut. is due him, aud ou motiou an order for .$6100 was paid. It was staled that auoflier foice of men and a tonrth steam roller will be ou the streets this week to hurry the' woik, Ponr of the 30 cars of vitrified blocks are at hand and large shipments j ot.cinshed stone are also in the yard. Dr. Hougli asked conceruiug street gtaae of Rosemary aveuue with reftreuee to the lot and scliool build¬ iug ihereuu, which now appears ninoli below grade. .Mr. Rose staled conncil will macadaruize 16 feet wide, and this will come witiiin live feot ofthe fiuish¬ ed gutters. Should the board lay curb and gutters this fall tne borongh will macadamize over to the gutters. The scliool lot has '-'.58 feet froutage ou alattison avenue. Mr. Gilliu stated that the building coiumittee of a for¬ mer school board, contrary to his advice, lowered the grade of the school wheu same was building aud now (he structure consequently is low. George Y Styer.presideut of the s..liool board, also advised couucil with rcfeteuco 10 Ihe matter. It was decided thut the highway comuiittee. solicitor ami engineer meet ihe scIiojI board tliere aud adjust the ilisputed ]ioiut. Mr. Uose asked cuuceruiug the stret't at right iiugles to Maiu street at the coruer of Rosemary aveuue and .Spriug Gardeu strett anil Mr. Gilliu him that there is a pro- .•jected street provided for ex'eudiug across the lon. .Mr. Rose eoutended that this sirett if opeued would prove of great advautage H. G. Kuigiit informed couucil that this projected highway is Poplar sireet. The solioitor was iustructed to ascertain the stains of this street by the uext meetiug of couuoil. t;«nir* B«aMr«.
