secular what does history teach us to tbe perpet uity of governments on the face of the earth established by conquest and war in the second century of the christian era the empire of rome comprehended the fairest part of the earth and tbe most civilized nation of mankind the frontiers of that extensive monarchy were guarded by ancient renown and disciplined valor the gentle but pow erful influence of laws and manners had gradually cemented tbe union of the pro vinces where is that empire now the first seven centuries were allied with a rapid succession of triumphs but it was reserved for augustus to relinquish the ambitious design of subduing the whole earth inclined to peace it was easy for him to discover that rome in her present exalted situation had much less to hope than to fear from the chance of arms and that in the prosecution ol remote wars the undertaking became everv day more difficult the event more doubtful and the possession more pre carious and less beneficial these are the expressions of gibbon the writer of the annals of the decline and fall ol the roman empire tbe romans had the greatest wealth the most magnificent and gorgeous pal aces and public edifices the world has ever known assassinations were as numerous as public elections in the united states and christians sutterec martyrdom and death like herds ol twine in the slaughter houses of chica go but the influence of christianity waa not confined to the limits of the roman empire after a revolution ol 14 or 15 centuries that religion has spread through europe diffused in asia and settled as the established church in the republics of america but gibbon more than 100 years ago after thorough investigation of the unaitvrdoin of in fidels concluded that christians hav inflicted far greater severities on each other than they had experienced from their opponents tbe church of rome defended by violence the empire whicl she had acquired by fraud ; a system of peace and beneyolene was soon die graced by proscriptions wars massacres and the institution of holy office in tbe netherlands alone more than 100 the subjects of charles v ar have suffered by the hands o the executioner the number of protestants who were executed in single province and a single reign far exceeded that of tbe primetive martyrs in three centuries of the roman em pi re " tbe blood of martyrs became the seed of the church it is remark able that the flames of war consume almost at the same time the temple o jerusalem and the capitol of rome the profession of christianity will savi neither man nor nation but all historians agree that it wa the agrandizement of vast territorie with mixed peoples that wrought th overthrow or the most enlightened am puissant national power that had ever existed down to the fall of the roman ute growth is good for a child til he becomes a full statured man but site that excessive obesity and procerity make him a monster and an object o abhorrence a burden to himself and a subject without hope of longevity or healthy progress among mankind so has it been with nations thus napoleon bonaparte ruined therefore let us deal carefully with our acquisi t ions in distant zones dispose of them if we can with advantage to tbe tribes the purchasers of the eminent domain and ourselves the purchase was ] mistake but under our responsibilitie i now in the position in which we fim ourselves invoking the aid of divin wisdom let us so dispose ourselves tc our duty that history will record nc dishonor nor shame to our nations name ob that isaiah of old with voice damascus heard assyria knew would eerily and earlv come to speal again of the burden of the isles f did it ever occur to you that just a the approach of christmastidu what chapter of accidents tragedies and i remember me much comment has been created . the rather blunt curt note sent by bee retary root of the war department t general miles for his approval of th dewey view of the schley controversy the army and navy officers have a hard lima of it when one goes into eithe ilfancli of the public service he become a slave and all under him are slaves one must have no opinion of his own his province is shapnnnville cox's ale and porter weio used instead of water for irinking purposes by the english and welsh miners in purely local matters there is no thing startling one feature of the own is the crowded condition of the tioteln many people are driven to the inns by the scarcity of houses and ser vants ahd the high rents one good big central hotel with ample grounds and curtilage is much needed in xorris kown wo want one where young famil ies can go and secure a suite of rooms and good service for the paucity of space in our present public houses and the scarcity of servants trained in thf art of the serretor made it a necessity in a place in such close proxmity to philadelphia and to all our public works a large class of our citizens finds their best employment in tbe city but prefer to reside here.if we had connections by electric cars with ambler or washing ton square it would be an invaluable blessing to us who desire to run away from norristown norristown needs 100 more bouses today but above all a com modious hotel where tbe great influx of strangers and overflow of citizens mav be attracted and adequately ac commodated and quartered the pro prietor of the hartranft augustus to relinquish the ambitious design of subduing the whole earth inclined to peace it was easy for him to discover that rome in her present exalted situation had much less to hope than to fear from the chance of arms and that in the prosecution ol remote wars the undertaking became everv day more difficult the event more doubtful and the possession more pre carious and less beneficial these are the expressions of gibbon the writer of the annals of the decline and fall ol the roman empire tbe romans had the greatest wealth the most magnificent and gorgeous pal aces and public edifices the world has ever known assassinations were as numerous as public elections in the united states and christians sutterec martyrdom and death like herds ol twine in the slaughter houses of chica go but the influence of christianity waa not confined to the limits of the roman empire after a revolution ol 14 or 15 centuries that religion has spread through europe diffused in asia and settled as the established church in the republics of america but gibbon more than 100 years ago after thorough investigation of the unaitvrdoin of in fidels concluded that christians hav inflicted far greater severities on each other than they had experienced from their opponents tbe church of rome defended by violence the empire whicl she had acquired by fraud ; a system of peace and beneyolene was soon die graced by proscriptions wars massacres and the institution of holy office in tbe netherlands alone more than 100 the subjects of charles v ar have suffered by the hands o the executioner the number of protestants who were executed in single province and a single reign far exceeded that of tbe primetive martyrs in three centuries of the roman em pi re " tbe blood of martyrs became the seed of the church it is remark able that the flames of war consume almost at the same time the temple o jerusalem and the capitol of rome the profession of christianity will savi neither man nor nation but all historians agree that it wa the agrandizement of vast territorie with mixed peoples that wrought th overthrow or the most enlightened am puissant national power that had ever existed down to the fall of the roman ute growth is good for a child til he becomes a full statured man but site that excessive obesity and procerity make him a monster and an object o abhorrence a burden to himself
