recognize the honorable pleasure of addressing you graduates on this occasion for 1 stand in what might be called an unique posi tion the honor is generally conferred upon some one who has attained fame or intellectual standing of prominence bat i feel what i lack in these respects is more than made up in personal in terest in the school and the feeling of affection toward the graduating class such an occasion is not entirely one of unmixed pie sure for there must be a feeling of regret over the reparations which must follow i do reje'ee with the graduates the class rejoices at having successfully completed the work but you also regret the severance of bonds to teachers and classmates it cannot be pleasure to give up the school days and enter upon life work nor to withdraw yourselves from the beloved teachers whose ability and ex ample cjnnot but be a noble inspiration to you in advising you on vour new duties what better can i do than pray that you always bear in mind the prin ciples your teacher has exemplified in her life in the words of your motto whatever sphere of life you are called upon to fill throw your whole heart into it and do not waste vour days in regret but do the duty at hand and do it well this will qualify you to fill higher spheres adapt high ideals and right princi ples do not look for the acquirement of riches nor position for they in themsehvs are not satisfying but rather aim in the formation and de velopment of character which will pre vail after all else is destroyed pattern your character after that of the lord jesus crush out all the feelings of sel fishness position will only fill you with trouble nnlees you use it rightly look to christ lor jour example and you will be successful take these thoughts witli you and with thin your i i prices reallzpil — < nirivai ion of the t'htiit h a study arranging plans for next tear the cultivation of the luscious straw berry is a study which is and hns been engrossing tb attention of several of our ambler truckers for years past each year experince is added to the amount of knowledge on the subject and each year plans are formulated etnd tried to bring the cultivation of the fruit up to the highest possible point this season has not been a particularly good one for the plants which are short of foliage and do not appear to have attained sufficient growth to pro duce the best possible fruit . samuel mralonan.of near jarreiiown is one of the most successful berry growers in this section and has two acres devoted to their culture he is growing the gandy william belt nickomer tennessee and sample and the sample and nickomer are yielding unusually well this seaton the plants as a rule have not attained the growth they should have made and consequent ly a few days of hot sun will cut the crop short just at the latter pait of the season when thev should be holding out and netting the most money last year mr mcalonan estimates that the crop was shortened about four days and that he lost 200 or 300 thereby this sea son he thinks he has discovered the proper fertilizer for berries and with the proper application next year he will raise the finest berries on the most luxuriant plants he tried it as an ex periment this year and the result is very evident in the fruit and plants the prices this year are holding up verv well ranging from 15 to 18 cents per box with 18 cents for sample va riety which is rather eatly last fri day he marketed 43 crates and on sun day his 18 pickers prepared 30 crates for monday's market tiie crates are hauled to philadelphia and the t?am is on the road all night mr mcalonan has al6o done well with his asparagus this vear the prices being maintained from 20 to 25 cents per bunch the season was such that the routs did not go to seed and allowed a continuous crooning at paying prices albert atkinson was unfortunate with his strawberry plants this year in that the patch is ovenun with chick weed and yard grass the weeds getting ahead of the farm hands at a season when their attention was necessa/y in other lines of farm work he has about 1 acres with about an equal area of new beds he has the clyde sample and gandy and was busily en gaged in picking the former when visit ed by a gazette representative the clyde came in early picking first on mav 31 bt ing marketed for 14 cents in competition with jersey berriee mr atkinson also devotes much time to the culture of asparagus which this vear averaged as high as 18 and 20 cents wholesale while some bunches were disposed of as high as 40 cents he fertilizes freelv with nitre which con tains about 20 per cent ammonia and gives satisfactory results james q atkinson has gandy wil liam belt and tennessee berries in a patch of about three-quarters of an acre he has planted for next year an acre of william belt and gandy mr atkinson says the frost did not hurt his plants and that he thinks berries are not influenced by the diy weather he finds the greatest enemy in the rust which ie a fungus growth affecting the leaves he thinks a good plan would be to spray with berdeux mixture once per week in the spring and up to picking time the growth seems to weaken the plants until they are unable to perform their proper function he thinks bpraying will also help the gooseberries which seem to be affected with a mil dew lo6t yrr.r he estimates his loss at fully 100 bushels just from this cause alone he had intended spraying this year but the burning of his barn dee troyed his water system and he was prevented from putting his plans into action robert h gillin has about 2 acres of the gandy berries and his yield al though not so gr°at as last year will this season by reason of the higher prices net a paying amount the plants are of fair growth and the patch free of weeds in places the vines seem thin as though attacked by an insect the lack of growth cannot be attributed to want of nourishment as they were well manured and the soil is naturally good being clay the fruit however while not so great in yield is fully up to the usual in size in fact this season two of the largest gandies ever raised by mr qillin were taken from the plants the landy berrv is the beet for market ever brought into this section it is late in bearing coming in well after the jersey berries the fruit in of good size tine color and carries exceeding ly well in shipping the bur is large and heavy giving the berry a tine ap pearance in the crates mr gillin sendw his fruit to philadelphia markets by ex press and gets from 15 to 20 cents per ox for all he can produce the new bed foi next year promises well and all the plants are gandy feullyu ihl david son of eugeno davis pi this ilaci1 and who learned tlu trade of machinist at auspicious he spoke words of encouragement to tiie graduates and urged them to look for good things throughout the whole year continuing he said i want to speak on eudcation and life education is life and life is ed cation education begins with life it if and all education is the develop in t of the nervous system ^ little cli id begins its education as soon as it attains life through the five sense it is receiving iuopressioup and although th 3 process is involuntary these im ir teions aie assimilated and moulded in b its very life a ad the education is gowg on ail the time thus a child do « net begin its education on entering school but we can trace its acqnieiticn of impressions away back in the home under the careful training of the moth er which is the best school the day never comes when a thinking rational being ceases to ue educated what then is education do not think it is all to be gained in the schools education is the development of power of reasoning of the will and of feeling formerly we used to conflict information with education but the two are not identical our school tours es tend to the development of power and the sharpening of intellect but the genuine information obtained does not amount to much our information must be organized and in such shape that it can be used if one knew all in the books lie would not necessarily be an educated man but training would be necessary the disciplining of the mind would be essential the word information means form ing within a person may not neces sarily be educated in school many of our great captains of industry have not been educated under tutors but they have developed mental powers college and school training aid in this develop ment land in the tendency to apply the inherent capabilities it used to be that only weathly persons er those of the first families could receive an educa tion at the schools but now we have institutions of learning in every state and there are rich endowments all over our country by which a good education is possible to all the best realization of the possibil ties of an education is iu the bringing home of the scbool give the children the very beet assistance yon can they are worthy of it all children are en titled to a happy childhood child hood is one long stage in the journey of life and measured bv our concep tion of time this period should be broadened while these young poeple have been graduated they are now going out into life to solve its problems with energy of will insight and concentration of mind the school btudies and results of the training by the conservation and trans formation of energy are never lost a very wise old world awaits you and you will be compelled very often to have recourse to your stored-up powers the world asks what can you do and the one who can do things is king dr hulley then closed his remarks with his best wibhes to all the diplomas were awarded by prin cipal kalm after a few remarks to the claes of 1902 in recognize the honorable pleasure of addressing you graduates on this occasion for 1 stand in what might be called an unique posi tion the honor is generally conferred upon some one who has attained fame or intellectual standing of prominence bat i feel what i lack in these respects is more than made up in personal in terest in the school and the feeling of affection toward the graduating class such an occasion is not entirely one of unmixed pie sure for there must be a feeling of regret over the reparations which must follow i do reje'ee with the graduates the class rejoices at having successfully completed the work but you also regret the severance of bonds to teachers and classmates it cannot be pleasure to give up the school days and enter upon life work nor to withdraw yourselves from the beloved teachers whose ability and ex ample cjnnot but be a noble inspiration to you in advising you on vour new duties what better can i do than pray that you always bear in mind the prin ciples your teacher has exemplified in her life in the words of your motto whatever sphere of life you are called upon to fill throw your whole heart into it and do not waste vour days in regret but do the duty at hand and do it well this will qualify you to fill higher spheres adapt high ideals and right princi ples do not look for the acquirement of riches nor position for they in thin your i i prices reallzpil — < nirivai ion of the t'htiit h a study arranging plans for next tear the cultivation of the luscious straw berry is a study which is and hns been engrossing tb attention of several of our ambler truckers for years past each year experince is added to the amount of knowledge on the subject and each year plans are formulated etnd tried to bring the cultivation of the fruit up to the highest possible point this season has not been a particularly good one for the plants which are short of foliage and do not appear to have attained sufficient growth to pro duce the best possible fruit . samuel mralonan.of near jarreiiown is one of the most successful berry growers in this section and has two acres devoted to their culture he is growing the gandy william belt nickomer tennessee and sample and the sample and nickomer are yielding unusually well this seaton the plants as a rule have not attained the growth they should have made and consequent ly a few days of hot sun will cut the crop short just at the latter pait of the season when thev should be holding out and netting the most money last year mr mcalonan estimates that the crop was shortened about four days and that he lost 200 or 300 thereby this sea son he thinks he has discovered the proper fertilizer for berries and with the proper application next year he will raise the finest berries on the most luxuriant plants he tried it as an ex periment this year and the result is very evident in the fruit and plants the prices this year are holding up verv well ranging from 15 to 18 cents per box with 18 cents for sample va riety which is rather eatly last fri day he marketed 43 crates and on sun day his 18 pickers prepared 30 crates for monday's market tiie crates are hauled to philadelphia and the t?am is on the road all night mr mcalonan has al6o done well with his asparagus this vear the prices being maintained from 20 to 25 cents per bunch the season was such that the routs did not go to seed and allowed a continuous crooning at paying prices albert atkinson was unfortunate with his strawberry plants this year in that the patch is ovenun with chick weed and yard grass the weeds getting ahead of the farm hands at a season when their attention was necessa/y in other lines of farm work he has about 1 acres with about an equal area of new beds he has the clyde sample and gandy and was busily en gaged in picking the former when visit ed by a gazette representative the clyde came in early picking first on mav 31 bt ing marketed for 14 cents in competition with jersey berriee mr atkinson also devotes much time to the culture of asparagus which this vear averaged as high as 18 and 20 cents wholesale while some bunches were disposed of as high as 40 cents he fertilizes freelv with nitre which con tains about 20 per cent ammonia and gives satisfactory results james q atkinson has gandy wil liam belt and tennessee berries in a patch of about three-quarters of an acre he has planted for next year an acre of william belt and gandy mr atkinson says the frost did not hurt his plants and that he thinks berries are not influenced by the diy weather he finds the greatest enemy in the rust which ie a fungus growth affecting the leaves he thinks a good plan would be to spray with berdeux mixture once per week in the spring and up to picking time the growth seems to weaken the plants until they are unable to perform their proper function he thinks bpraying will also help the gooseberries which seem to be affected with a mil dew lo6t yrr.r he estimates his loss at fully 100 bushels just from this cause alone he had intended spraying this year but the burning of his barn dee troyed his water system and he was prevented from putting his plans into action robert h gillin has about 2 acres of the gandy berries and his yield al though not so gr°at as last year will this season by reason of the higher prices net a paying amount the plants are of fair growth and the patch free of weeds in places the vines seem thin as though attacked by an insect the lack of growth cannot be attributed to want of nourishment as they were well manured and the soil is naturally good being clay the fruit however while not so great in yield is fully up to the usual in size in fact this season two of the largest gandies ever raised by mr qillin were taken from the plants the landy berrv is the beet for market ever brought into this section it is late in bearing coming in well after the jersey berries the fruit in of good size tine color and carries exceeding ly well in shipping the bur is large and heavy giving the berry a tine ap pearance in the crates mr gillin sendw his fruit to philadelphia markets by ex press and gets from 15 to 20 cents per ox for all he can produce the new bed foi next year promises well and all the plants are gandy feullyu ihl david son of eugeno davis pi this ilaci1 and who learned tlu trade of machinist at
