front of mr wilson's property to the morris road it comprises just 10 acres leaving some 30 acres in the field the location is an ideal one having a fine frontage for sidings from the railroad and a beautiful slope to the wissahickon which however does not touch the tract purchased mr mecrea intimated that the firm whose title bas not been disclosed will start the erection of a plant immediate ly and also hinted at the probability of erectine a lot of houses for the em ployes at any tate the day after the purchase surveyors were up at this point locating 6takes and joseph w hunter chief story that the le bigh valley traction company would run its cars to and from chebtnut hill by june 1st relied verv much upon his imagination no responsible magnate of that company made such a statement to any reporter all the same it has had extensive newspaper circulation it now appears more likely that the time will be deferred till at least july at the b ginning of the present week many poles had not been planted be tween north wales and springhouse the wiring of others was in progress it was evident that the bridge ovei the trewerryla would not be finished fora considerable time as much of the em bankment had to be laid and later the track for several hundred feet placed thereon at north wales no progress whatever had been made in building the bridge over the railroad cut or its approaches the reading railroad had taken frfsh hold in its ever watchful efforts to block the trolley and seizing upon some legal technicality had two watchmen employed to give notice of any attempt to build the bridge it is now evident that it was a blunder to plan the crossing there better had a grade crossing on main street and em ployed a watchman centre square a surprise party was given miss preliminary talk — speaker kngngrcl for tlie occasion large attendance i good roads in upper dublin a public meeting of the citizens and taxpayers of upper dublin township will be held in odd fellows hall jar rettown this thursday evening nt 8 o'clock for the pnrpcue of discussing the proposition of increasing the bonded indebtedness of the township in the sum of 125,000 for the permanent im piovenient of the roads and highways the meeting will be addressed by sena tor john a wentz,of fort washington who has been identified with every good road movement at harrisburg for the past four years thomas w barlow esq who resides on the old potts plane ami who served under george s gra ham as assistant district attorney for1 four years and who will present the legal side of the issue wiltner atkin son presid°nt of the butler drive turnpike road company under whose management tho road has been put and maintained in first-class condition and pays a 5 per cent dividend on the stock ; alexander neely who as one of the supervisors of abington township assisted in the building of good roads in his township and the management and expenditure of a like loan for the identical purpose which upper dublin is considering it is expected that other speakers will also be present several preliminary meetings have been held to perfect arrangements for this public discussion of the movement one was held in jarrettown last thurs day evening when mr nathaniel dickey was made chairman and mr harry walker secretaty another meeting was held saturday evenine when a subscription was take'n and mr walker made treasurer a general discussion wbb indulged in at these meetings and it was considered that t^e euggeitou of the mpervisors is vn exceedingly good one in requesting a representative committee from the whole township to be appointed at a public meeting under whose direction the funds if tlio loan succeeds are to be disposed it was further favored that the supervisors bind themselves to ex j end not more than 25,000 annually of the 125,000 and that the bonds bo issued bj needed to pay for the work this plan will be a great saving in interest to the township and yet al low the supervisors and advisory com mittee ample funds to carry along the work which will be given out by con tract on carefully drawn specifications the committee having first of all taken a map of the township and decided just what roads need to be macadamized judgment being based on the amount of eon and their condition winner atkinson of three tuns on tbe question ^ loan if carried »!»-.» lie jnitlotomly iifiifii'fl the value of good roaili — rni i ami siimilil hriui v.no per acre rn planting r three tuns pa may 20 1902 to the editor of the ambler gazette the question whether i'pper dublin is to stand itill or go forward is up for decision by her citizens or will be on tuesday ntxt when a vote is to be tak en on the proposition to borrow 125 000 for the purpose of macadamizing all the dirt roads of tbe township not exactly that either for we may bor row 125,000 for the purpose named nfl etill have roads but little better than we have now saddling the tax payers with an annual expenditure of l(i,00o where now we expend hut 8000 for no good purpose or benefit the only thing that will justify such an expenditure is the certainty that good roads will result to be followed by comfort and convenience in travel with an increase of population a rise in valik'9 of real estate in short a marked development of the township in every possible way if we are in the future to pay double the present tax we must have a larger population a higher as sessment based upon a rise in actual values and all this is possible if we are given the kind of roads we ought to nave good roads would certainly open up the township and put cjnite a new aepect upon the face of affairs people from the city would soon be seeking homes in our midst a thing they will never do as the roadb now are farms that now wilfcnot sell at any price would find purchasers at probably double the present valuation land anywhere within three miles of the railruiid ought to bring 500 per acre and would soon do so under the stimulus of cood roads there are no buyers now at half that the question is soon to be decided therefore whether the fine old town ship of upper dublin is to remain jlslick-in-the-mnd or take a fine step forward and place herself alongside of her progressive sisters that have already joined the movement for good roads and are profiting thereby for my part 1 want to see every road in the town ship given such a perfect roadbed that it will be a pleasure to drive over and haul loads upon them feeling sure that same would be wortli far more than they will cost but if the job be botch ed if rotten stone are to be nsed if tbe road beds are to be rutted and gullied if no attention is to be paid to drainage the larger expenditure pro posed will dot yield satisfactory results better dirt roads as we have them now than mieerable turnpikes fit only for barbarians olens1de and around ilensiile portohict lia been repaint ed born to mr and mrs isrnr romoht b son william williams store spfielal sermon to the l.«nlx indn^trinl organi zation that snpprea linmvi.i.i.illtv con demned on sunday evening may is rev n thomas brown pastor of the ambler presbyterian church preached a verv fitting sermon to the ancient order united workmen the text was taken from mark i li and they were in the ship mending their nets the pennon in part follows labor is the normal condition of man when the lord of cieation hid perfected and beautified the garden of eden man was placed in it to drese it and to keep it xot until man by an act of disobedience broke the law of god did the ground become cuieed ami labor was turned into druggery sin produced not only havoc with the hap piness of man but with the productiv ity of the soil but god's eternal plans connot be frustrated and the safely and development of mankind since the creation bns been found to be in following out the divine injunction given in the garden the wreck and ruin of man's idea of labor began to express itself very early in the human race this degen eiate notion was seen first in full nc tion in the ancient roman state in the triplex division of the people into pa tricians plebians and slaves the real line of cleavage however being alonn the ideas of labor the patricians and plebians arranging themselves on one side and the slaves on the other thi5 division persisted through the ancient and midiaeval economy nnd today is supremely present in the two classes the industrious rich and poor and the idle rich and poor from the individual standpoint wo find society divided into three classes as respects the idea of usefulness in the world first the man who absorbs more than he produces thus leaving the world poorer than when he came into it sec ond the man who manages to use all that he makes thus contributing no thing to the world's progress third the man who by employment of his best self in the interest of humanity confers a benefit on his race for all time by giving more than he has received when jesus walked on the shore of the galilean lake on that day lone ago and hailed the busy iishernien as the;.1 mended their nets he dignified their service bv calling them to a higher work ever since that hour labor has taken on a new meaning and men have been encouraged to do better and more heroicly for the love they have for him who has sanctified labor in brief christ has helped the idea of labor to realize its real purpose in life bv flret huuia.r passing through hatfield last week the remaining lot of trolley poles were planted within the boroubg limits of lansdale oat suequehanna street by inhumanity to man has nowhere a better illustration than in those industrial organizations which aim to destroy competition in production and labor whereby they are able to charge the maximum fur their wares and pay the minimum of wages the old question of the relation of labor and capital cannot be settled finally and satisfactorily unitl the golden nile aa interpreted by christ shall be put into operation secondly christ sancti6ed labor he made it honest and respec'.shle the gambling instinct is condemni 1 by the principles which he announced the modern craze of getting something for nothing is the work of the arch fiend wealth procured by gambling in any form is to be condemned when it is protected by law and countenanced and practiced by professing christians it becomes the superlative crime of the ages murder becanse it kills the con science when will honest manhood assert itself and fight to the death a monster that seeks to destroy body and soul thirdly christ ennobled labor by teaching men that in it character is de veloped it is not what a man does that makes him noble it is tbe amount of manhood that goes into service la bor cannot degrade man but man the desirable location of the grounds are said to be the causes of the purchase the lot is i00 feet on the township line road and the distance on the road extending from the railroad property across in front of mr wilson's property to the morris road it comprises just 10 acres leaving some 30 acres in the field the location is an ideal one having a fine frontage for sidings from the railroad and a beautiful slope to the wissahickon which however does not touch the tract purchased mr mecrea intimated that the firm whose title bas not been disclosed will start the erection of a plant immediate ly and also hinted at the probability of erectine a lot of houses for the em ployes at any tate the day after the purchase surveyors were up at this point locating 6takes and joseph w hunter chief story that the le bigh valley traction company would run its cars to and from chebtnut hill by june 1st relied verv much upon his imagination no responsible magnate of that company made such a statement to any reporter all the same it has had extensive newspaper circulation it now appears more likely that the time will be deferred till at least july at the b ginning of the present week many poles had not been planted be tween north wales and springhouse the wiring of others was in progress it was evident that the bridge ovei the trewerryla would not be finished fora considerable time as much of the em bankment had to be laid and later the track for several hundred feet placed thereon at north wales no progress whatever had been made in building the bridge over the railroad cut or its approaches the reading railroad had taken frfsh hold in its ever watchful efforts to block the trolley and seizing upon some legal technicality had two watchmen employed to give notice of any attempt to build the bridge it is now evident that it was a blunder to plan the crossing there better had a grade crossing on main street and em ployed a watchman centre square a surprise party was given miss preliminary talk — speaker kngngrcl for tlie occasion large attendance i good roads in upper dublin a public meeting of the citizens and taxpayers of upper dublin township will be held in odd fellows hall jar rettown this thursday evening nt 8 o'clock for the pnrpcue of discussing the proposition of increasing the bonded indebtedness of the township in the sum of 125,000 for the permanent im piovenient of the roads and highways the meeting will be addressed by sena tor john a wentz,of fort washington who has been identified with every good road movement at harrisburg for the past four years thomas w barlow esq who resides on the old potts plane ami who served under george s gra ham as assistant district attorney for1 four years and who will present the legal side of the issue wiltner atkin son presid°nt of the butler drive turnpike road company under whose management tho road has been put and maintained in first-class condition and pays a 5 per cent dividend on the stock ; alexander neely who as one of the supervisors of abington township assisted in the building of good roads in his township and the management and expenditure of a like loan for the identical purpose which upper dublin is considering it is expected that other speakers will also be present several preliminary meetings have been held to perfect arrangements for this public discussion of the movement one was held in jarrettown last thurs day evening when mr nathaniel dickey was made chairman and mr harry walker secretaty another meeting was held saturday evenine when a subscription was take'n and mr walker made treasurer a general discussion wbb indulged in at these meetings and it was considered that t^e euggeitou of the mpervisors is vn exceedingly good one in requesting a representative committee from the whole township to be appointed at a public meeting under whose direction the funds if tlio loan succeeds are to be disposed it was further favored that the supervisors bind themselves to ex j end not more than 25,000 annually of the 125,000 and that the bonds bo issued bj needed to pay for the work this plan will be a great saving in interest to the township and yet al low the supervisors and advisory com mittee ample funds to carry along the work which will be given out by con tract on carefully drawn specifications the committee having first of all taken a map of the township and decided just what roads need to be macadamized judgment being based on the amount of eon and their condition winner atkinson of three tuns on tbe question ^ loan if carried »!»-.» lie jnitlotomly iifiifii'fl the value of good roaili — rni i ami siimilil hriui v.no per acre rn planting r three tuns pa may 20 1902 to the editor of the ambler gazette the question whether i'pper dublin is to stand itill or go forward is up for decision by her citizens or will be on tuesday ntxt when a vote is to be tak en on the proposition to borrow 125 000 for the purpose of macadamizing all the dirt roads of tbe township not exactly that either for we may bor row 125,000 for the purpose named nfl etill have roads but little better than we have now saddling the tax payers with an annual expenditure of l(i,00o where now we expend hut 8000 for no good purpose or benefit the only thing that will justify such an expenditure is the certainty that good roads will result to be followed by comfort and convenience in travel with an increase of population a rise in valik'9 of real estate in short a marked development of the township in every possible way if we are in the future to pay double the present tax we must have a larger population a higher as sessment based upon a rise in actual values and all this is possible if we are given the kind of roads we ought to nave good roads would certainly open up the township and put cjnite a new aepect upon the face of affairs people from the city would soon be seeking homes in our midst a thing they will never do as the roadb now are farms that now wilfcnot sell at any price would find purchasers at probably double the present valuation land anywhere within three miles of the railruiid ought to bring 500 per acre and would soon do so under the stimulus of cood roads there are no buyers now at half that the question is soon to be decided therefore whether the fine old town ship of upper dublin is to remain jlslick-in-the-mnd or take a fine step forward and place herself alongside of her progressive sisters that have already joined the movement for good roads and are profiting thereby for my part 1 want to see every road in the town ship given such a perfect roadbed that it will be a pleasure to drive over and haul loads upon them feeling sure that same would be wortli far more than they will cost but if the job be botch ed if rotten stone are to be nsed if tbe road beds are to be rutted and gullied if no attention is to be paid to drainage the larger expenditure pro posed will dot yield satisfactory results better dirt roads as we have them now than mieerable turnpikes fit only for barbarians olens1de and around ilensiile portohict lia been repaint ed born to mr and mrs isrnr romoht b son william williams store spfielal sermon to the l.«nlx indn^trinl organi zation that snpprea linmvi.i.i.illtv con demned on sunday evening may is rev n thomas brown pastor of the ambler presbyterian church preached a verv fitting sermon to the ancient order united workmen the text was taken from mark i li and they were in the ship mending their nets the pennon in part follows labor is the normal condition of man when the lord of cieation hid perfected and beautified the garden of eden man was placed in it to drese it and to keep it xot until man by an act of disobedience broke the law of god did the ground become cuieed ami labor was turned into druggery sin produced not only havoc with the hap piness of man but with the productiv ity of the soil but god's eternal plans connot be frustrated and the safely and development of mankind since the creation bns been found to be in following out the divine injunction given in the garden the wreck and ruin of man's idea of labor began to express itself very early in the human race this degen eiate notion was seen first in full nc tion in the ancient roman state in the triplex division of the people into pa tricians plebians and slaves the real line of cleavage however being alonn the ideas of labor the patricians and plebians arranging themselves on one side and the slaves on the other thi5 division persisted through the ancient and midiaeval economy nnd today is supremely present in the two classes the industrious rich and poor and the idle rich and poor from the individual standpoint wo find society divided into three classes as respects the idea of usefulness in the world first the man who absorbs more than he produces thus leaving the world poorer than when he came into it sec ond the man who manages to use all that he makes thus contributing no thing to the world's progress third the man who by employment of his best self in the interest of humanity confers a benefit on his race for all time by giving more than he has received when jesus walked on the shore of the galilean lake on that day lone ago and hailed the busy iishernien as the;.1 mended their nets he dignified their service bv calling them to a higher work ever since that hour labor has taken on a new meaning and men have been encouraged to do better and more heroicly for the love they have for him who has sanctified labor in brief christ has helped the idea of labor to realize its real purpose in life bv flret huuia.r passing through hatfield last week the remaining lot of trolley poles were planted within the boroubg limits of lansdale oat suequehanna street by
