building on monnl pleasant the occasion was one of reunion for the missions at time tuus anil pen llvn worshiped w'th the members of the mother church it was indeed a ¦ 111-1 . ral inn service for as each member's name on the church roll was nnd by tin1 clerk william slutter a passage of scripture was u.at in re sponse l,'ev l j l>encliiield was expected to lie present in preach the anniversary serinon hut lie was unexpectedly de tained iii new york and the pastor rev i !•'.. valentine officiated in lns stead miss l'.lina l walker presided at the organ ami the exercises opened al 2.48 with a hymn mr edward m sage of the tliree tuns mission then read the first ib verses of the fourth chapter of kphcsians and the choir rendered as pants the hart mr m d hallman of the penllyn mission led in prayer the offering was then taken which was devoted to the fund for anniversary cnereiscs o could i speak the matchless worth was sang by the ronjirej it ion and a duet hark hark my soul was sung which was followed by prayer by kev norman jones of the mercer home rev f i valentine then took the pulpit and in a few introductory re marks spoke nf the vacancy on the pro gram of service owing to the inability of rev denchfleld to be present anil assuming himself the responsihilitv of preaching the anniversary sermon the text of which he cited as follows upon this rock will i build my church and the l'utes of hell shall not prevail against it he said the custom of the mount pleasant baptist church with its missions to gather here once each year is most titting and most beautiful it is like n family reunion after u period of separation when each greets the other under the parental roof as one of the newcomers in the church i may be expected to have but little in terest in the event yet this is un church and 1 have looked upon this anniversary as one of p'ensant anticipa tion for i havo dedicated my life and ell'oit to this portion of zion and i feel thereby closely allied to the work and to every member this building and these grounds are cherished in our hearts as sacred for manv lie sleeping here and their spirits have entered into eternal rest the passage applies to the founda tion of the ehureh universal a tern poral church is not only a part of the church universal but a type as an application to ns the lord has estab lished his church on a rock and i will give thee the key of my kingdom is the scripture for the roman catholic foundation for the statement that t lit ^ pope is the head of the church as a suc cessor of peter but a study of peter's life tenches us that he was never in home and that lie hac never exercised such powers as are now ascribed to the pope true he was the foremost disci ple yet the power wns only given him in a general sense peter 8 avowal of faith is a clear interpretation of this matter he said thou art the christ anil on this true rock or linn i'ounda tion w«s his faith bu tided the true foundation is christ and the faith for the individual is found in the personal faith of christ the confession of faith in christ is t lit foundation of the visi ble church and faith is the strength of the invisible church carrying out this we maintain that children shall hi1 re ceived into full membership when i personal manifestation and confession can be made but i have often follow ing the example of christ placed my hands upon the heads of infant's and blested them it was the personal faith in christ that led the 15 original members to found this church " the sates of bell shall not prevail against it is conveyed to mean that destruction or death will not destroy it the promise given that the church so founded shall not be overcome has been clearly manifested by iod toward thin naiticnlar church at first them wort few members and financial help wus lacking the early struggles aie reveal ed in a set i if resolutions presented once which if adopted would liavr placed the church outside the denomi nation a break was threatened in 1848 and if it hail not been for the aid given bv the pennsylvania home mission a dissolution would have resulted a re viva followed another break in 1848 and a brighter future opened up in one of the letters written about that time is the following we humbly hone that when the chaff has all beeii removed then will be enough wheat left for seed the fathers and mothers gathered here iii worship and god rewarded their faith add the gales of ih.rknes.s did not prevail ree gates of death even have only served to build up the church and strengthen it all the m iginal members have gone bui their work still lives it is true of the church of jesus christ that iu each generation the members fill places work and tluix pa.-s away but the church moves on ward triumphant over death this ehurcli of ii5 years bears wituess to the tact that god lias preserved it f these walls could speak how eloquent woukl he their message here ihe members met aud u.'ishiped and here were fought building on monnl pleasant the occasion was one of reunion for the missions at time tuus anil pen llvn worshiped w'th the members of the mother church it was indeed a ¦ 111-1 . ral inn service for as each member's name on the church roll was nnd by tin1 clerk william slutter a passage of scripture was u.at in re sponse l,'ev l j l>encliiield was expected to lie present in preach the anniversary serinon hut lie was unexpectedly de tained iii new york and the pastor rev i !•'.. valentine officiated in lns stead miss l'.lina l walker presided at the organ ami the exercises opened al 2.48 with a hymn mr edward m sage of the tliree tuns mission then read the first ib verses of the fourth chapter of kphcsians and the choir rendered as pants the hart mr m d hallman of the penllyn mission led in prayer the offering was then taken which was devoted to the fund for anniversary cnereiscs o could i speak the matchless worth was sang by the ronjirej it ion and a duet hark hark my soul was sung which was followed by prayer by kev norman jones of the mercer home rev f i valentine then took the pulpit and in a few introductory re marks spoke nf the vacancy on the pro gram of service owing to the inability of rev denchfleld to be present anil assuming himself the responsihilitv of preaching the anniversary sermon the text of which he cited as follows upon this rock will i build my church and the l'utes of hell shall not prevail against it he said the custom of the mount pleasant baptist church with its missions to gather here once each year is most titting and most beautiful it is like n family reunion after u period of separation when each greets the other under the parental roof as one of the newcomers in the church i may be expected to have but little in terest in the event yet this is un church and 1 have looked upon this anniversary as one of p'ensant anticipa tion for i havo dedicated my life and ell'oit to this portion of zion and i feel thereby closely allied to the work and to every member this building and these grounds are cherished in our hearts as sacred for manv lie sleeping here and their spirits have entered into eternal rest the passage applies to the founda tion of the ehureh universal a tern poral church is not only a part of the church universal but a type as an application to ns the lord has estab lished his church on a rock and i will give thee the key of my kingdom is the scripture for the roman catholic foundation for the statement that t lit ^ pope is the head of the church as a suc cessor of peter but a study of peter's life tenches us that he was never in home and that lie hac never exercised such powers as are now ascribed to the pope true he was the foremost disci ple yet the power wns only given him in a general sense peter 8 avowal of faith is a clear interpretation of this matter he said thou art the christ anil on this true rock or linn i'ounda tion w«s his faith bu tided the true foundation is christ and the faith for the individual is found in the personal faith of christ the confession of faith in christ is t lit foundation of the visi ble church and faith is the strength of the invisible church carrying out this we maintain that children shall hi1 re ceived into full membership when i personal manifestation and confession can be made but i have often follow ing the example of christ placed my hands upon the heads of infant's and blested them it was the personal faith in christ that led the 15 original members to found this church " the sates of bell shall not prevail against it is conveyed to mean that destruction or death will not destroy it the promise given that the church so founded shall not be overcome has been clearly manifested by iod toward thin naiticnlar church at first them wort few members and financial help wus lacking the early struggles aie reveal ed in a set i if resolutions presented once which if adopted would liavr placed the church outside the denomi nation a break was threatened in 1848 and if it hail not been for the aid given bv the pennsylvania home mission a dissolution would have resulted a re viva followed another break in 1848 and a brighter future opened up in one of the letters written about that time is the following we humbly hone that when the chaff has all beeii removed then will be enough wheat left for seed the fathers and mothers gathered here iii worship and god rewarded their faith add the gales of ih.rknes.s did not prevail ree gates of death even have only served to build up the church and strengthen it all the m iginal members have gone bui their work still lives it is true of the church of jesus christ that iu each generation the members fill places work and tluix pa.-s away but the church moves on ward triumphant over death this ehurcli of ii5 years bears wituess to the tact that god lias preserved it f these walls could speak how eloquent woukl he their message here ihe members met aud u.'ishiped and here were fought
