in the itate when the reign f error sliall cease and the ring leaders of corruption shall tomble in their recklesi race and rlotioua career his name will stand out on the annals of mir time unscathed by the historian of pennsylvania the base aisaall upon the life of mc kiriley lias aroused the indignation of the world the assassin v*ll be severe ly dealt witli and thu whole iribe of anarchists will be placed under the ban of civilization the second shock seem worse than the fir^t although we were startled nnd horrified when we irst heard the news of the assassination of mckinley for we liad been educated by the despatches to believe that the president would recover when early sat urdav morning came the intelligence of his death ta mv brief carear live presidents have died in office harrison taylor lincoln garfleld and mckinley lin coln was killed at the close of the civil war the tragedy threw a gloom and sorrow over all the nations of the earth the attack on garfield on july 2 1881 came like a thunder clap from a clear sky but the great man lingered till isept 19 when he died at long branch and now 20 years afterwards the assassin has slain our last president one of the greatest lawyers and leaders in the land is laid low and his voice silenced foreveronore by a mur derer the spirits of these martyrs will live after them and great lessons shall he taught by their immortal utterances and agencies ages to come what the present political result will be for the unexpired term of mr mc kinley none can foresee after the death of harrison vice president tyler led the whig party to distraction after 1'aylor's death fillmore moved awav from his northern supporters awl when lincoln died andy johnson turned over to 4nd_d^i''.niled*pnn bin fi»rrrj£i ocratic~c>noinies t<h iippon anu wrfea garfleld passed away his cabinet realm cd ami arthur formed a cabinet on new lines and with new men mckinley had such a hold upon the people wlio reverenced him as a wise ruler and sagacious statesman of which his last great speech is the best evidence extant that it is with anxious solici tude we await the coming administra tion of the new man as vice presi dent roosevelt has had a flowery path and a perfunctory performance but as president he is called upon to fill a vast vacuum caused by the removal of a mor al and intellectual giant who has not had a superior among american states men since the death of lincoln we have now on hand the schley tiaiiidgon entanglement growing out the war in cuba in which a unitary court will be called upon to decide whether or not either schley or sampson was at the battle of santiago heroes are generally at such a safe distance that it requires historians about half a century to settle the question of superiority in the victor to whom belongs or rather upon whom is bestowed the honor but a very important court of inquiry at the brooklyn navy vard lias just found that col robert l meade haw been guilty of the double offence of making a false report and at the same time making false charges agaiflst major c.h lauoh heimtr and col f l denny this in quiry lasted four weeks but now col , meade will be arraigned before a court martial which may render bis usefulness no longer necessary to the naval service the court of inquiry seems to be very much like a coroner's inquest — it only leads to farther investigation and settles nothing in itself nothing binding but just enough to warrant • trial of the ac cused or implicated in the court on friday morning sept 18 1901 before hon henry m ed wards the qms of hemandus
