The Distinguished Achievement Medal has been presented by PHS since the 1960s to an individual or organization that has made outstanding contributions to the field of horticulture or has used horticulture as an avenue to create positive social change in the Greater Philadelphia region. Since its inception in 1978, the Gold Medal Plant Award program of The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society has recognized trees, shrubs and woody vines of outstanding merit. The program was originally conceived by noted nurseryman Dr. J. Franklin Styer, who realized homeowners and gardeners needed to learn about superior woody plants for their landscapes.
