Fo u r persons were hospitalized as a result of the crash. The dead girl was Identified as Pamela Koze, fifteen, d a u g h te r of Mr. and Mrs. Albe rt Koze, Emmaus, a freshman a t Linden Hall. Critically injured with multiple injuries and admitted to E p h r a ta Community Hospital were Beth Umlauf, eighteen; Emmaus, a member of the Ju n io r Class a t Linden Hall, and Albert Steir.ke, forty- Peak Mail Reached At Local P.O. The Lititz Post office has not bogged down over the Chris tmas mail, even though it is heavier th a n usual, Po s tma s te r R ic h a rd C. Rader said today. Mails a re moving out of Lititz and local de liveries are being made on schedule. The peak mailing days were reached Monday and Tuesday, when the re were 76,881 cancellations for the two days. This is somewhat less th an the same two days last year, when cancellations reached 82,645. However, the Pos tma s te r pointed out, this year there is one more day to go before Chris tmas, compared with 1961. The efficiency of the staff is pointed up, he said, by the fact th a t only six ex tra Ch r is tma s as s is tants were hired this year, helf the n umbe r as la s t year. Admitted to Lancas ter General Hospital were Mary Hoffman, fifty-one. 3 Clayton Ave., Lancaster, whose condition was repor ted as serious, and Ruth Allgyer, twenty-two, Wa shington Boro R l , who was re ported as “ satisfactory.” They were bro u g h t from the scene of the accident in the Warwick ambulance. Pennsylvania State police from the E p h r a ta ba rracks who inves tigated the accident, said they were not permitted to question any of the survivors because of their cordi-tion, so were unable yesterday afternoon to determine who were the drivers of the cars. However, one car was regis tered in the name of Steinke,. and it is th ought the Linden Cell girls were riding in this car, while the othe r c ar was registered in the name of Mary Hoffman. State Police ■ s ta ted the Steinke car apparently was travelling nor th on Route 501, while the Hoffman car was travelling west on 322. They said there is a stop sign for Route 501. The crash occurred in front of the home of Mrs. Ellen R. Weidman ■ a t the intersection of Routes 501 and 322. Residents near the intersection were quoted as saying th a t a car traveling on Route 501 ran thro u g h a stop sign and collided with an auto on Route 3 2 2. Both cars were demolished and wound up on the lawn of the home of Mrs. Weidman who is an invalid in a wheel chair. Children Plan Yule Program The children of th e Salem ■^Evangelical United Bre thren Church of Rothsville will present th e i r Chris tinas program on Sunday a t 9:15 a.m. a t the Sunday School hour. Airlines Put Lititz On Freight Map The domes tic airlines are adding Lititz directly to the Air F re ig h t map of the United States, according to an announcement made this week. S. S. Bertz and Sons, a motor c a rr ie r b a sed in (Lancaster, will exchange traffic, both inbo u n d and outbound, with the airlines a t Philadelphia for dire c t movement to and from shippers located a t nine P en n sylvania cities, including Lititz. T h e new “Air Tru c k ” program which is being inaugur a ted by the 30 Airlines who c a r ry Air /F r e ig h t coordinates the services of both a ir and ■motor carr iers on a national basis, and in time will serve shippers and receivers in more th a n 22,000 communities. TO INSTALL LIGHTS The borough has received permits from the state to ins ta ll traffic lights a t Second and Broad Sts. and Main and Broad Streets, and to improve the lights a t Lincoln and Broad, Borough Manager R. Before this, the tiny house of the Torres was furnished only with a davenport and chair. Fo r more th an a year Mr - and Mrs. Antonio de Leon of near San Ju an , Pu e r to Rico, have rented the house next to J. M. Leed’s Ice P la n t in Spring Alley. Mr. de Leon works a t a sawdust plant and Mrs. de Leon has been employed by Hess’ dry cleaning since her arr ival in Lititz. Both Mr. Leed and Mrs. Beu-leh Hess have praised this couiple for the ir diligent work Leed expressed the view th a t the Recreation Center or the public schools should offer a course in English to the many Pue rto Rican families in the Lititz area. I n August, Mrs. de Leon’s brother-in-law and s ister Mr. and Mrs. Manuel Torres, a r rived in Lititz and moved next door '.They have three children in school — Manuel, fifth grade; Ramon, second grade, and Hector, first grade. Mrs. Torres keeps the three small de Leon children, ages five, th re e and two, while the mothe r works. Magda Zambrano, the eldest, goes to first grade. St. Luke’s Receives Members St. Lu k e ’s United Church of Christ will have reception of members and infant baptism at the Worship service at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday. The Rev. Robert M. Myers will preach on the subject “Who Is This Ch r i s t” ? Tlie Chris tmas program of the Church will be presented in the evening a t the 7:30 p.m. service, sponsored by the Children’s Hour. It will include a film and a puppet show on the Chris tmas story. Refreshments will be served following the program. Members and friends a re invited Monday the re will be a Chris tmas Eve service a t 7:30 p.m. with the Rev. Mr. Myers giving the message. Wednesday evening the Senior High Post High group will hold a Chris tmas Party from 8 to 11:30 p.m. a t the Recreation Center. Invitations have been extended to the Senior group of the Bethany Children’s Home for this party. Individual classes in the Church School will present their own programs a t 9:15 a.m. d u r in g the Church School hour. Live Nativity A Live Nativity scene will be on view to the public on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings from 7 to 10 p.m. at St. Lu k e ’s Church. The project is being a r ranged by the Senior High — Post High Fellowship, using young people and adults to enact the scene. There are also live animals in the scene, including a Sicilian donkey loaned by Charles Nixdorf. Owl Hill, and sheep loaned by William Pfautz, Lititz R l . Chris tmas music will be played and the Chris tmas story n a r r a ted in a recording by the pastor, the Rev. Robe r t M. Myers. The scene will be enacted by three different groups each evening, so actua lly about 72 persons will take part. The scenery and lighting have b e en set up by the Churchmen’s Fellowship. Burkey. Mrs. Mary Allen will be tlie accompanist and will present a brief recital of seasonal music prior to this evening service which will be held a t 7 p.m. on December 23. Soloists will be Mrs. Howard Moore, Mrs. Robert Cochran, Miss Sandra Shaub, Mr. Albert Ebbert, Gary Hanna, Stanley Stout, and Gordon E. Burkey. Rev. Jame s G. Chris tmas Eve plans include a new service in St. P a u l ’s for this year, to he held on December 24 a t 7:30 p.m. Miss Francis Nissley will present special harp music. The Young People’s and Martin Luthe r Choirs will also contribute Chris tmas selections, and a shor t Chris tmas sermon will be delivered by the pastor. This new service has been s ta r ted this year in order to emphasize the fact th a t the whole story of Chris tmas is a Chris tian s tory and th a t it centers in the Christ and His Church. The hour of 7:30 p.m. has been chosen in order to give families an opportunity to worship together. Ju n io r L u th e r League members in St. P a u l ’s will join the young people of the community in the annual caroling tour, which will s ta r t a t the Lititz Square a t 11 p.m. on Chris tmas Eve and will conclude with re f reshments in the Lititz Evangelical United Brethren Church. Concluding the special observances in the Chris tmas programs of St. P a u l ’s there will be the annual Christmas Eve service a t 11 p.m. Ray Kauffman will be the soloist for this service. Mr. Kauffman is well known as a splendid flute soloist. The Senior Cho:r will be available for special Chris tmas selections a t this service. Santa Claus will arrive in town on Monday, December 24, for the annual Children’s Chris tmas party sponsored annually by the Lititz Fire Company, one of the greates t traditions in the annual life of Lititz. Santa will arrive from the North Pole a t the Lancaster Airport at 9:20 a.m., and will leave at 9:25 a.m., in the Lititz Fire truck, escorted by members of the Fire Company, stopping enroute a t the Children's Aid Society, Neffs-ville. The jolly old red-coated Saint will get to Lititz at 9:40 a.m., and will tour the town until 10:30 a.m., a fte r which he will visit the Moravian and Zion Homes about 11 a.m. 'Santa will arr ive a t the Fire Tiall at 11:30 a.m., where he will remain until 3:30 p.m. to welcome all the children of the are a and to dis tribute candy and oranges. Traditional Vigils At Moravian Christmas Observances In Churches Churches in Lititz will observe the bir thday of the In fan t -Christ, most joyous occasion of the Chris tmas year, with special services this week-end and on Christmas Eve. The Young People’s Depa r tmen t of the Warwick Assembly of Churches will sing carols on Chris tmas Eve at the square, carrying on a longs tanding tradition. They will meet a t 11 p.m. and sing until 1 a.m. The Lititz E.U. B. Church will serve as host and provide refreshments. ■Most traditiona l of all se rvices here are the Christmas Vigils a t the Moravian Church which will he observed a t four identical services. So gre a t is the interes t th a t tickets have b e en sold out for some time. However, those who do not have tickets may .be seated in the galleries, The Moravian Church will Observe the traditiona l Christmas Vigils for the 203rd year with four identical services to be held a t 6 and 7:30 p.m. Sunday and on Chris tmas Eve. The Rt. Rev. Allen W. Schattschneider D. D. S. T. D., pas tor, and the Rev. Ed g a r A. Snyder, Jr ., a s s is tant pastor, will preside a t the services, which will be comprised almost entirely of music. The traditional ode for the Chris tmas Vigils will he sang by the congregation an d the choirs, accompied by organ and orchestra. The Lovefeast and lighted beeswax candles will toe served ony in the nave. All pews have been reserved, but anyone not having tickets may go into the galleries. The Ju n io r Choir will sing the “ Children’s Te Deum” by Henry Tucker and the Moravian “Morning S ta r ” by F r a n cis Florentine Hagen, with Ruth Amidon d a u g h te r of Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Amidon, as child solist on . On Chris tmas Eve,' the soloist will he Carolyn Herr, d a u g h te r of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Herr, Willow St. “ Stille Nacht, Heilige Nac-h t ” and “M'ache Dich Auf” will be sung from manuscript in the original German by the COUNCIL POSTPONED The Lititz Borough Council will meet on Wednesday, December 2 6, a t 7 p.m. in the Borough Hall, instead of their regularly scheduled time of December 25, Senior and Youth Choirs. The choirs, with organ and orchest r a will also sing “Thou Child Divine” Jo h an n A. P. Schulz, and the “ Benedictus” from the Sixth Mass of Franz Jo s eph Haydn. The services will close with the Moravian chorale “ Sing Hallelujah, Praise the L o rd ” , written in 1824 by the church pastor, Bishop J o hann Chris tian Bechler. Scherer, Jr ., associate pastor of St. P a u l ’s Lu th e ra n Church, an nounced to the congregation during the church services Sunday morning th a t he has submitted his resignation, effective December 27. He has accepted a call to the Rebersburg Pa s to ra l Charge fn Centre County, Pennsylvania. He and his family will begin work ‘ in the parish a t the beginning of the new year. Pa s to r Scherer has served in St. P a u l ’s Church as associate pastor since September, 1960, coming to Lititz from the Rossville Pas toral Charge in York County. He is a g ra d uate of the Lu th e ra n Theological Seminary in Philadel- (Continued on Page 3) Lititz Club In Annual Bird Count The Lititz Bird Club will tak e the annual Bird count o» Sunday, December 30, meeting a t Broad St. and Lincoln Ave. a t 7:30 a.m. This is the 63rd annutil census taken all th ro u g h o u t the United States, sponsored by th e National Audubon Society, and the 51st for Lititz where the count is tak en in behalf of the Society. The firs t repor t was re corded in 1912 by Dr. He r bert H. Beck and Charles Bricker. Each year since then the bird census was taken by the local group. The rain date for the Lititz bird count will be J a n u a ry 1. Any person is welcome to assist. The census is taken from dawn to dusk. Any person knowing of any unusual birds around Lititz for this time of the year should contact any. one of tlie census group. Lust year 11 persons assisted In reporting an all-time high of 61 different species. Among the group are Barton L. Sharp, William Light, Robert Buch, Russell Markert and Charles Regennas. Universal Prayer Week To Be Held January 7-10 The universal week of prayer services will be conducted by the Warwick Association of Churches d uring the week of J a n u a ry 7 — 10, 1963. The schedule of services is as follows: Monday, J a n u a ry 7, the service will be held in the Church of the Brethren. Rev. Olden D. Mitchell will pre side, and Bishop Allen W. ¡Schattschneider, pastor of the Moravian Church, will deliver the message. Tuesday, J a n u a ry 8, the ■St. Lu k e ’s United Church of Christ. Rev. Robert M. Myers will preside, and Rev. D. M. Cohick pastor of the Church of God, will deliver the message. Wednesday, J a n u a ry 9, Trinity Evangelical Congregational 'Church, Rev. Jame s K. Fo u r persons were hospitalized as a result of the crash. The dead girl was Identified as Pamela Koze, fifteen, d a u g h te r of Mr. and Mrs. Albe rt Koze, Emmaus, a freshman a t Linden Hall. Critically injured with multiple injuries and admitted to E p h r a ta Community Hospital were Beth Umlauf, eighteen; Emmaus, a member of the Ju n io r Class a t Linden Hall, and Albert Steir.ke, forty- Peak Mail Reached At Local P.O. The Lititz Post office has not bogged down over the Chris tmas mail, even though it is heavier th a n usual, Po s tma s te r R ic h a rd C. Rader said today. Mails a re moving out of Lititz and local de liveries are being made on schedule. The peak mailing days were reached Monday and Tuesday, when the re were 76,881 cancellations for the two days. This is somewhat less th an the same two days last year, when cancellations reached 82,645. However, the Pos tma s te r pointed out, this year there is one more day to go before Chris tmas, compared with 1961. The efficiency of the staff is pointed up, he said, by the fact th a t only six ex tra Ch r is tma s as s is tants were hired this year, helf the n umbe r as la s t year. Admitted to Lancas ter General Hospital were Mary Hoffman, fifty-one. 3 Clayton Ave., Lancaster, whose condition was repor ted as serious, and Ruth Allgyer, twenty-two, Wa shington Boro R l , who was re ported as “ satisfactory.” They were bro u g h t from the scene of the accident in the Warwick ambulance. Pennsylvania State police from the E p h r a ta ba rracks who inves tigated the accident, said they were not permitted to question any of the survivors because of their cordi-tion, so were unable yesterday afternoon to determine who were the drivers of the cars. However, one car was regis tered in the name of Steinke,. and it is th ought the Linden Cell girls were riding in this car, while the othe r c ar was registered in the name of Mary Hoffman. State Police ■ s ta ted the Steinke car apparently was travelling nor th on Route 501, while the Hoffman car was travelling west on 322. They said there is a stop sign for Route 501. The crash occurred in front of the home of Mrs. Ellen R. Weidman ■ a t the intersection of Routes 501 and 322. Residents near the intersection were quoted as saying th a t a car traveling on Route 501 ran thro u g h a stop sign and collided with an auto on Route 3 2 2. Both cars were demolished and wound up on the lawn of the home of Mrs. Weidman who is an invalid in a wheel chair. Airlines Put Lititz On Freight Map The domes tic airlines are adding Lititz directly to the Air F re ig h t map of the United States, according to an announcement made this week. S. S. Bertz and Sons, a motor c a rr ie r b a sed in (Lancaster, will exchange traffic, both inbo u n d and outbound, with the airlines a t Philadelphia for dire c t movement to and from shippers located a t nine P en n sylvania cities, including Lititz. T h e new “Air Tru c k ” program which is being inaugur a ted by the 30 Airlines who c a r ry Air /F r e ig h t coordinates the services of both a ir and ■motor carr iers on a national basis, and in time will serve shippers and receivers in more th a n 22,000 communities. TO INSTALL LIGHTS The borough has received permits from the state to ins ta ll traffic lights a t Second and Broad Sts. and Main and Broad Streets, and to improve the lights a t Lincoln and Broad, Borough Manager R. Before this, the tiny house of the Torres was furnished only with a davenport and chair. Fo r more th an a year Mr - and Mrs. Antonio de Leon of near San Ju an , Pu e r to Rico, have rented the house next to J. M. Leed’s Ice P la n t in Spring Alley. Mr. de Leon works a t a sawdust plant and Mrs. de Leon has been employed by Hess’ dry cleaning since her arr ival in Lititz. Both Mr. Leed and Mrs. Beu-leh Hess have praised this couiple for the ir diligent work Leed expressed the view th a t the Recreation Center or the public schools should offer a course in English to the many Pue rto Rican families in the Lititz area. I n August, Mrs. de Leon’s brother-in-law and s ister Mr. and Mrs. Manuel Torres, a r rived in Lititz and moved next door '.They have three children in school — Manuel, fifth grade; Ramon, second grade, and Hector, first grade. Mrs. Torres keeps the three small de Leon children, ages five, th re e and two, while the mothe r works. Magda Zambrano, the eldest, goes to first grade. St. Luke’s Receives Members St. Lu k e ’s United Church of Christ will have reception of members and infant baptism at the Worship service at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday. The Rev. Robert M. Myers will preach on the subject “Who Is This Ch r i s t” ? Tlie Chris tmas program of the Church will be presented in the evening a t the 7:30 p.m. service, sponsored by the Children’s Hour. It will include a film and a puppet show on the Chris tmas story. Refreshments will be served following the program. Members and friends a re invited Monday the re will be a Chris tmas Eve service a t 7:30 p.m. with the Rev. Mr. Myers giving the message. Wednesday evening the Senior High Post High group will hold a Chris tmas Party from 8 to 11:30 p.m. a t the Recreation Center. Invitations have been extended to the Senior group of the Bethany Children’s Home for this party. Individual classes in the Church School will present their own programs a t 9:15 a.m. d u r in g the Church School hour. Live Nativity A Live Nativity scene will be on view to the public on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings from 7 to 10 p.m. at St. Lu k e ’s Church. The project is being a r ranged by the Senior High — Post High Fellowship, using young people and adults to enact the scene. There are also live animals in the scene, including a Sicilian donkey loaned by Charles Nixdorf. Owl Hill, and sheep loaned by William Pfautz, Lititz R l . Chris tmas music will be played and the Chris tmas story n a r r a ted in a recording by the pastor, the Rev. Robe r t M. Myers. The scene will be enacted by three different groups each evening, so actua lly about 72 persons will take part. The scenery and lighting have b e en set up by the Churchmen’s Fellowship. Soloists will be Mrs. Howard Moore, Mrs. Robert Cochran, Miss Sandra Shaub, Mr. Albert Ebbert, Gary Hanna, Stanley Stout, and Gordon E. Burkey. Rev. Jame s G. Chris tmas Eve plans include a new service in St. P a u l ’s for this year, to he held on December 24 a t 7:30 p.m. Miss Francis Nissley will present special harp music. The Young People’s and Martin Luthe r Choirs will also contribute Chris tmas selections, and a shor t Chris tmas sermon will be delivered by the pastor. This new service has been s ta r ted this year in order to emphasize the fact th a t the whole story of Chris tmas is a Chris tian s tory and th a t it centers in the Christ and His Church. The hour of 7:30 p.m. has been chosen in order to give families an opportunity to worship together. Ju n io r L u th e r League members in St. P a u l ’s will join the young people of the community in the annual caroling tour, which will s ta r t a t the Lititz Square a t 11 p.m. on Chris tmas Eve and will conclude with re f reshments in the Lititz Evangelical United Brethren Church. Concluding the special observances in the Chris tmas programs of St. P a u l ’s there will be the annual Christmas Eve service a t 11 p.m. Ray Kauffman will be the soloist for this service. Mr. Kauffman is well known as a splendid flute soloist. The Senior Cho:r will be available for special Chris tmas selections a t this service. Santa Claus will arrive in town on Monday, December 24, for the annual Children’s Chris tmas party sponsored annually by the Lititz Fire Company, one of the greates t traditions in the annual life of Lititz. Santa will arrive from the North Pole a t the Lancaster Airport at 9:20 a.m., and will leave at 9:25 a.m., in the Lititz Fire truck, escorted by members of the Fire Company, stopping enroute a t the Children's Aid Society, Neffs-ville. The jolly old red-coated Saint will get to Lititz at 9:40 a.m., and will tour the town until 10:30 a.m., a fte r which he will visit the Moravian and Zion Homes about 11 a.m. 'Santa will arr ive a t the Fire Tiall at 11:30 a.m., where he will remain until 3:30 p.m. to welcome all the children of the are a and to dis tribute candy and oranges. Traditional Vigils At Moravian Christmas Observances In Churches Churches in Lititz will observe the bir thday of the In fan t -Christ, most joyous occasion of the Chris tmas year, with special services this week-end and on Christmas Eve. The Young People’s Depa r tmen t of the Warwick Assembly of Churches will sing carols on Chris tmas Eve at the square, carrying on a longs tanding tradition. They will meet a t 11 p.m. and sing until 1 a.m. The Lititz E.U. B. Church will serve as host and provide refreshments. ■Most traditiona l of all se rvices here are the Christmas Vigils a t the Moravian Church which will he observed a t four identical services. So gre a t is the interes t th a t tickets have b e en sold out for some time. However, those who do not have tickets may .be seated in the galleries, The Moravian Church will Observe the traditiona l Christmas Vigils for the 203rd year with four identical services to be held a t 6 and 7:30 p.m. Sunday and on Chris tmas Eve. The Rt. Rev. Allen W. Schattschneider D. D. S. T. D., pas tor, and the Rev. Ed g a r A. Snyder, Jr ., a s s is tant pastor, will preside a t the services, which will be comprised almost entirely of music. The traditional ode for the Chris tmas Vigils will he sang by the congregation an d the choirs, accompied by organ and orchestra. The Lovefeast and lighted beeswax candles will toe served ony in the nave. All pews have been reserved, but anyone not having tickets may go into the galleries. On Chris tmas Eve,' the soloist will he Carolyn Herr, d a u g h te r of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Herr, Willow St. “ Stille Nacht, Heilige Nac-h t ” and “M'ache Dich Auf” will be sung from manuscript in the original German by the COUNCIL POSTPONED The Lititz Borough Council will meet on Wednesday, December 2 6, a t 7 p.m. in the Borough Hall, instead of their regularly scheduled time of December 25, Senior and Youth Choirs. The choirs, with organ and orchest r a will also sing “Thou Child Divine” Jo h an n A. P. Schulz, and the “ Benedictus” from the Sixth Mass of Franz Jo s eph Haydn. The services will close with the Moravian chorale “ Sing Hallelujah, Praise the L o rd ” , written in 1824 by the church pastor, Bishop J o hann Chris tian Bechler. Scherer, Jr ., associate pastor of St. P a u l ’s Lu th e ra n Church, an nounced to the congregation during the church services Sunday morning th a t he has submitted his resignation, effective December 27. He has accepted a call to the Rebersburg Pa s to ra l Charge fn Centre County, Pennsylvania. He and his family will begin work ‘ in the parish a t the beginning of the new year. Pa s to r Scherer has served in St. P a u l ’s Church as associate pastor since September, 1960, coming to Lititz from the Rossville Pas toral Charge in York County. He is a g ra d uate of the Lu th e ra n Theological Seminary in Philadel- (Continued on Page 3) Lititz Club In Annual Bird Count The Lititz Bird Club will tak e the annual Bird count o» Sunday, December 30, meeting a t Broad St. and Lincoln Ave. a t 7:30 a.m. This is the 63rd annutil census taken all th ro u g h o u t the United States, sponsored by th e National Audubon Society, and the 51st for Lititz where the count is tak en in behalf of the Society. The firs t repor t was re corded in 1912 by Dr. He r bert H. Beck and Charles Bricker. Each year since then the bird census was taken by the local group. The rain date for the Lititz bird count will be J a n u a ry 1. Any person is welcome to assist. The census is taken from dawn to dusk. Any person knowing of any unusual birds around Lititz for this time of the year should contact any. one of tlie census group. Lust year 11 persons assisted In reporting an all-time high of 61 different species. Among the group are Barton L. Sharp, William Light, Robert Buch, Russell Markert and Charles Regennas. Universal Prayer Week To Be Held January 7-10 The universal week of prayer services will be conducted by the Warwick Association of Churches d uring the week of J a n u a ry 7 — 10, 1963. The schedule of services is as follows: Monday, J a n u a ry 7, the service will be held in the Church of the Brethren. Rev. Olden D. Mitchell will pre side, and Bishop Allen W. ¡Schattschneider, pastor of the Moravian Church, will deliver the message. Tuesday, J a n u a ry 8, the ■St. Lu k e ’s United Church of Christ. Rev. Robert M. Myers will preside, and Rev. D. M. Cohick pastor of the Church of God, will deliver the message. Wednesday, J a n u a ry 9, Trinity Evangelical Congregational 'Church, Rev. Jame s K.
