THIRTY-PIVE OB, THE OLP MAID'S BIRTHDAY. "Thirtj-five to-day I Mv life ia just half tLi oufih—that is, if I am to lire the tbreescore aui\ teu, wliicli tLe Bible, says is the life of luau. 1 sometimes wish that I had ^already reapiied the eud.*' Siichw:i3lh<* remark that I addressed to myself upou the morniDg of my thirty-fifth hiilliiiay. I was uot iu tLe hest of hnmorsi as luay be iuferred from a portion of my xemark. But when I had pu-shed aside the cat taiu aud opeued the wiudow, aud had revelled for awhile in the glories of an October moruiug, (for the reader must kuow, what I am proud of telliDg, that my birth-day comes iu the glorious moiith of October, "which makes the woods so pay,") theu did my spirit aciniie ils usual toue of serenity, aud I be¬ came half ashamed of my first exclamation.— Bnt the day had bt'guu badly, and I was des¬ tined to encounter and overcome many more Tosatioos before it ended. As 1 looked iuthe glass that morniug, never ao it set'med io me, had the lav.ageg of time beeu so perceptible. My brown locks, which Lad I een the pride aud admiration of my friends, and which only yesterday had seemed to IC as glossy, ahnudaut aud beaatiful as evei, now looked faded and tbiu—aud, yes,- aohi, uly, there wasa gray hair! lamashatned to.'cufess tbat, forone instant, I was almost di-jp»3el to sit down and cry, hut, Iiappily, I di \ uot yield to tbe tetnptation. My eyes, too, which in my younger days had been dark and lustrous, as my consiu Jobu had once sail, 'dhone like an angers wben I was an- imtitel,'* uow, upon the morning of my thirty fifib 1 ilth day, looked dull aud greeu. Tiiere weie Wl inkles, too, upoumy face, which coald on J have heen placed there by the hand of lime. Tn fact, I lookt-d like a wrinkled, faded griuiclil maid, aud with this impression strong iip.m tny mind, I put on the mostQ,aaker-like drtps .possessed, combed my hair back as llahily as possib'e and went down to break¬ fast. As I opened the door, I was unfortunate en-'tigh to interrupt a family conference ; for thet J was seated at the table, uncle aud anut, Jobit, Earry, Frauk, and little Annie, all seem¬ ingly engaged in very earnest conver-sation.— Up m my sudden eutrant;e there was au abrupt pause ,and some embarrassment expressed by the fcnnger memhers of the family. V "Auother advantage iu being an old maid," tho. ght I to myself: "she'a 6ure to stumble into places where she isu't wanted," As I seated myself in my accustomed place at the table, there was au exclamation from Jol-u: ' Good gracious, Emily 1 bave yon turned Qnakei ? What in ihe world ia the meaning cf thpt drab dress ?'* " I imeaus that I am thirty-fire to-day; so I e leverent, if you please," said I, shaking my i^nger at him. 'In halfmouraing for her hopes, I suppose," multeiod Harry, with a most malicious expres- Ei( u efface. Atihis point I jotted down a memorandum, in my mind—to give Ilarry a lecture upon lespeot before the day was through. '' do believe Consin Emily has made a mistake,'" shouted my pet Frank, at this mo¬ ment, shaking his curls all orer his head.— " kuow she is forty instead of thirty-five to d.iy, and ru prove it bythe family Bible aftet I'leakfast. Oh, Cousin Emily I to thiuk that you, of all others ehonld cheat in your age 1 shall never believe in you afler this.'' *'lIoli your tongues, boys," interrupted my unole. "Ifyou dou't behave yourselves you shal 1 take no part in you kuow what." And lieie my uncle nodded mysteriously. As I left tbe table that morning, I felt sure lh 11 hated the boys modt decidedly, and I came to the couclusion that they were the most ungrateful set that ever lived. Even Fiank, by whose sick-bed I bad spent some yeatsofmy lifa, whohad often decLired that ho loved me better tban anythiug else on eaith even he bad wounded me by a foolish jest. **riease, Emily, don't come down to dinner in 3ra)," said Jobu, aa he handed me to the dotn I 1 an nuusually gallant Ptyle. ' 'A. d. Cousin Emily, mother says yoa are no lo euter the kitcben to day," whispered little Annie, with a most hetvitching smile. *' So they waut to get rid of me," thought I, bitterly. " And what can have come over those boya this morning ? I never knew them to be¬ have so. I really believe they wish I were out ot the house, aud bo I begin to thiuk do unole and anut, too. Last year I waa loaded with piesetitd, and to-day tht-re ia not even tbe meutiou of one, Kot, of coarae, that 1 care anything abont the presents tbemselves, but th(»u it is pleasant lo know there is some one in tho world who car«s about you. Well, I seo Jahall have to go away from here and find & ln'uie hy myself, for who carea for an old maii 1 Thusgrumbling.Ientered my room and caat tuy eyea aronnd to see what it was best to emjb.y my time about—for upon thig, my butbday, I was extremely fastidious as regard¬ ed luy occupations. U pleased me jnst then to loniember that there wna a qaantity of old leltei.-* to be looked overaud sorted—a task tha 1 bad pat off from day to day as a pain- % one, for it wonld necessarily recall the one bitt'T sorrow of my life. I welve yeara hefore, upon that very day, xny marriage waa to have taken place. But before the time came we had quarreled, and wl)en the ann rose upon our wedding-day, Pldlip AUen was across the Bea, a sad andsol- itaiy wanderer. Aa I re-read those letters— relioa of my love-dream—how vividly did befora me I How well I recolleoted oar quar¬ rel, which my own willfnlneas had canaed, and Philip's aad, reproaohfal face, when I turned from him with the angiy exolamation: " Go, if yoa wiah it—it is best—for we shall never agree. We had better never meet again." And we had never met again. My words, bitterly repented of aa aoon aa apoken, and repented of every day and hour sinoe tbat time, had been Uterally adhered lo. Philip waa in a distant land, and I was an old maid of thirty- five. My mosings were here interrupted hy the most outrageous noise down stairs. I began seriously to think that my uncle waa knocking away a portion of his honse by the hammering that I heard. The most uproarious ahoats of langhter likewise floated up from the regions helow. " I really heUeve everybody here ia crazy lo-day," thoaght I, aa I comraenoed my toilet for dinner. To please John I put on the very gayest dresa I possessed; for, however much I might grumble at the boys, I knew, and they knew, that I wonld do almost anything to please them. " Very well—very well, indeed. Yoa'll do, Emily," said John, aa he took a critical aurvey ofmy dress throngh hia eye-glass. At dinner-time there were tbe same myste¬ rious nods aud glancea that I had noticed at breakfaat, and everybody seemed auusually excited, lu the afteruoou .John prepared to drive me out in his new hngciy, to see tbe coantry in its October dress. " More likely to make acqaaiutance with Mother Earth," retorted I; " for really, John, you are so excited you will not be able to manage that spirited horse of yours." But John protested that he was never calmer in his life, aud, as a proof of his placidity, performed some of the most ridiculoua man- eouvres, without, however, convincing me at aU. ' Better go, Consiu Emily," said Harry " it may be yoar last ohanoe, I don't expect you'U as much as look at me after to-day." Ia my heart of hearts I determined hoth to look at the gentleman aud to talk to him in a way that he should not soou forget. Bat tbis matter was put off for another day, for there stood Johu waiting impatiently for me. Now, 33 I really had no fear whatever of John'a dri¬ ving, I decided lo go, little guessing the vex¬ ations I should undergo before I reached home. *'Now," thoaght I, as Iseated myself in the buggy, "uow I will find out the meaning of all this mystery. It will be impossible for John to keep the secret from rae. Has anything unusual happened to day, John?"I commeuced. " Anything unusual happened to d.iy ?" re¬ peated John. " Why, yes, I tbink there has." "What ?" demanded I, impatiently. "Why, you are thirty-five to-day, are you not, Emily !" returned John, with a very de¬ mure face ; 'aud quite young and handsome, too, for tbirty-five."' Now, I was both amused and provoked at the absurdity of the speeeh. ToteU thetruth, [ had by this time become a little tired of heariug " thirty-five," *' No matler," thought I, *• he will at leasl be moved when he heara that I am going away. Iknow that he will say 'cousin Eiaiiy can't he dispensed with.* " John," I began, "some¬ times—to-day especially—I have thought lhat it would he besl if I sbould go away from here —that I shonld be happier iu auother dwelling- place, because- " I was here interrapted hy John, who was attacked by the most outrageous flt of cough¬ ing, which lasted several minutes, aad which by ita violence, threatened to rupture a blood¬ vessel. Indeed, I was really alarmed by the evident distress iu wbicii he waa, and which exhibited itself by the purple hue of his faco, .and by the oddest grimaces. No allusion was mude to my remark during the remainder of tlie ride, and I must say I was not a little wounded by the perfect indifference manifested by Jobn upon the suhject ofmy departure. "There'a Amy Anthem," shouted John, as we passed a cottage, at the gate of which stood a bloomiug young girl. And as .lohn spoke, he drew up with a sudden jerk, threw the reins to me, aud was soou in earnest con¬ versation with Amy. Now Amy was a great favorite of mine, and it was no secret that she was a great favorite of Johu's also: but I shoijld have preferred lhat he shoald have takeu another time to have showu his par¬ tiality, especially as, by their motions, I knew that they were talking about me. So I leaned further back in tbe carriage, feeling very un¬ comfortable, aud imagining their whole con- Tdrsation. " I suppose he is telliug her that I am thirty- five today, aud of coarse ahe will anawer, whh her prettiest smUe, 'Poor old maid; I pity her?'" " (lood-bye, Amy. Now don't forget to be ready at the ex'act moment," was John*a final speech, as we drove away. John had several other caUs lo make, the object of which I could not discover. There were aeveral mysterious conferences held with elderly spectacled ladies, and middle-aged la¬ diea, and youug ladies, all of whom nodded kindly lo me, hut all of whom I suspected of .«ayinp to each other, "She's thirty-live to day, poor thing I" How I wished we were at luome, and home we reached at length, only lo be met at the door hy Harry, who had spent the time profitably by composing an epitaph on oar probable fate, wbich, stauding at the foot of the stairs, he shouted out to me word hy word. Uow long I sat in the solitude of my own room I know not. Weary of the present, I had gone back into the daya of the past—days tbat never could retum. When I awoke to actual life it waa dark, aud the room felt dark and chilling. There was au unusual clatter of voices and sound of faet below, and hurry¬ ing from one room to another. I passed down the dark staircase and opened the parlor door, and then atarted back at the flood of light aod the sight lhat burst upou me. The parlors were most brilliantly lighted, and full of com¬ pany—my particular friends—many of whom I had thought far distant; tbe friends of the family were all there. What a complete chauge from the dark, chilly room above, and the society of my own somewhat sombre thoughts, to these coi?y, comfortable parlors and this pleasant company, every one of whom had somethiug agreeahle or complimentary to say to me, as, with John beside me to keep me in countenance, I received tbe friends who crowded about me. What a change, too, had come over the tamily. All the restraint which had so vexed ine during tbe day was gone.— My uncle and aunt were ten times kinder to mo than usual, if suoh a thing eould he possi¬ ble. My cousins, too, were completely trans¬ formed into polite and agreeable people. Aud ns Harry presented me with a magnifioeut bouquet, he whispered; "¦ Let this atone in part for my saucy speech¬ es to-day, Couain Emily," I thought at that momeut I could have for- giveu him much greater offenaea. " :Now," said John, " we are to have a series of tableaux, all in your honor, Emily. Yon- are not expected to take part in Ihem, other¬ wise than by staring at them most intently, for I assure yoa they wUl be something remarka¬ ble." I laaghed, promised to stare at them most intently, and seated myself with auch of the -company aa were not actors. In our rather old-fashioned mansion, the library connected wilh the parlora by meansof folding doors, and these being now pnshed aside, disclosed the theatre of performances. The ohanges which the Uhrary had undergone, accounted also for the hammering soands I had heard in the moming. The first tableaux was rather a failare. It represented John, in a very picturesque dress, and with a drawn weapon, atanding over Frauk, who crouched upon the gronnd in ter- The bright weapon so near his curly head, maat have frightened my little favorite, «peiy otaranutance oonaMted with it oome tip / for he made a very per^eptifalp movemant. which greatly amased the speotators, but de¬ stroyed the effeot of the picture. Then fol¬ lowed a representation of Evangeline, with a aweet, aad face, sitting by "the nameless grave ;" Ruth among her sheaves of wheat, besidea varions groups which looked remarka¬ bly weU. Little Ked Riding Hood, whioh character was represented by blooming Amy Anthem, in a charming red cloak, was auother attractive feature. But the tableaux which most engaged my attentiou was the last of all, where David waa represented as mourning over the dead Absa¬ lom. Harry, aa Absalom, lay iu the very sem¬ blance of deatb, every feature in perfect re¬ pose. There was a hush among the specta tors, for perfect stillness was such a novelty in connectiou with our wild, roguish Harry, that this seemed real, too real. Over the bier bowed David in all the ipajesty of woe. The face of the actor was hidden from my sight; bul the bowed form^ the attitude alone, pro¬ claimed the depth of human suffering. Never before, lo my knowledge, had I seen the per¬ aon who represented David, nor did he aeem kuown lo the compauy, for when the curtain fell every one asked of his neighbor the qaes¬ tion, " Who acted David!" None knew. A little later in the evening I managed to find Harry, who lookwd uow as little like the dead Absalom as it was possible lo look, and endeavored to extract from him some infor¬ mation iu regard to the stranger: for, strange to say, that was tbe suhject upon whioh my thoughts oftenest dwelt. But Uarry pretended perfect ignorance. " Uow shoald I know who it was, when my eyes were closed the whole time ? I lell you what, it isn't ao easy thiug lo act Absa¬ lom." " But you certaiuly kuow who was leaning over you, Ilarry." " I know ! I think not. I had as much aa I could do to keep perfectly alill." I aaw that there was nothing to be extracted from Harry, so I attacked John upon the sub¬ ject. But my questious remained unanswered for John was again seized with one of those fearful fits of coughiug that had engaged my sympatljy in the morning. " Now that I have recovered, Emily," said John, when it pleased him to stop coughingi "just come with rae into the dining-room, from this crowd, I've something there to show you." And something indeed there was ; for there stood my good old uncle, with a beaatiful gold watch iu his hand which he presenled to me with a few simple but affecting words. Then followed my auut with a gift, al once elegant and appropriato. And then, iu their tum, each of the boys. Before the presentation of his gift, which was au elegant rosewood wri¬ ting-desk, Johu attempted to maktj a little speech, bat broke down in the midst of it, to the great amosement of all, for John was very seldom embarrassed. Ah ! how little justice I had done them all that m'orning. I had ac¬ cused them of not caring for me, of wishing me oat of the house; aud here had the whole family united in honoring my birthday and remembering my tastes. How much had I, old maid sa I was, and thirty-five years old, to he. thankfal for! How like a stab did every oue of them kindnesses seem, when I thought of my moruing soliloquy. As these ideas passed through my miud, I raised my eyes aud encountered those of Aunie, who, child¬ like, had beeu fluttering about from one room to another, and was now watching me. " Now, Cousin EmUy, if yoa will come iuto the library, I will ahow you "my present." The library had been eutirely deserted by our guests, and as Anuie and I approached il from the dining-room, I saw ouly one solitary figure, lhat of the strauger, sitting wilh his face turned from tbe light. I was abont to withdraw, but Annie urged me gently forward, and just then the stranger lurned with an eager look, and for tbe fir.st time for twelve years I stood face to face with Philip Allen, There was no mistaking those featares, which once seeu, could never he forgotten, aud there was no miataktng the eager, impetuous haste with which Philip rushed fortpard to greet me. He was not chauged, and that thought hrought such exceeding joy that I forgot that I was thirty five, aud no longer young and handsome. Strange to say, this idea never occurred to me during the remainder of the evening) wnich seemed unaccountably short, neither the next day, nor the next day after. Bat, as Harry remarked next morning at breakfast, travelers have such wonderful atories lo relate that one cannot thiuk of auythiug else, Philip, iudeed, had been a wanderer many years, and those years had been so fuU of marvelous adventures, and it was ao necessary that he shoald tell Ihem to somebody, that it happen¬ ed, I hardly kuew how, lhat I was obliged to give him a great many conferences in the library. And these adventures had from one thiug led on to another, and finally, in lhe most nuromantic mauner possible, ("for what romance could be expected of sach elderly people ?) it was proposed that wo ahould give out another invitation lo our friends, and tbal we should become the actors in that impoaing tableau, caXied marriage. We did as we pro¬ posed, and so I became Mrs. Philip AUen. John congratulated me iu a curious fashion: " You are not half good enoagh for Philip, Emily. For haven't you deserted me most cruelly, when I tookthe trouble to take yon lo ride npon your thirty-fifth birthday, and nearly killed myself iu keeping good news from you. The whote family took tho great < est trouble lo deceive you that day, for of course we all knew that Philip had come. B y the way, I must tell PhiUp how much happier you would be if you weut away from here, becaase " And here John was seized with his old fit of coughing, wbich was speedUy cured, however, by the sight of Amy Anthem. As for myself, I need only say that I look back with the most pleasant recoUectioua lo the day when I was thirty-five, and I assure you that wasn't a great while ago. "WOMAN'S GTTALITIES. The characteristic quaUties ofwoman.when true to the lype of her being; her delicacy, modesty, reserve, and chastity in thought and feeling, word, and action; her sweetuess, gentleness, patience sympathy, tenderness, dependence, devotion; her senaibility, to beauty and grace, order fituess aud propriety iu speech, dress, behavior, everything; her intellectnal faculties, more receptive, than productive, thought resting more on feeling thau feeling uo thought, making her more susceptible of culture aud refinemeut thau apt for grasping the abstruse and ragged in science and practical life; all these are her charms for man, through which man gets unspeakable good to his own nature; while mau's harder texture in body and mind, his strength, courage, self-reliance,' hia grasp, foroe, and productive power in the world of thought aud action, draw woman lo him. Thus each finds in the other what each one needa. The womanly woman feels heraelf strong aud brave wben she leans on a man, aud a man'a mauly courage grows stouter and at lhe aame time the rugged hardness of hia nature is sofieuedby tender reverence, as with one arm he supports, and with the other he protects the gentle one clingiug to his aide. Iu everything in short, in which they are made differeut, it is that each may fiud their proper counterpart in the otber. They are made different iu order that they may become one. Out ofthis very difference springs the closest and richest uniou, the union of mutual love, whereof marriage is the outward representa¬ tion. Only in thia true married uuion, and in the home of love that builds itself up out of it, cau the fullness and perfection of the individual Ufe, dignity, and worth of each be found and realized. JOTTINSS BY THE WAY. Those two celebrated divines and soholars, Dra. Soulh and Sherlock, were diapating on some religoas anbject, when the latter accnsed the other of using wit in the controveasy.— " WeU," eaid South, " aappose it had pleaaed God to give you wit, what would you have done f" A strict temperance man, whoae wife had iallendown in a fit, asked the dootor, in slow aud measured tones, if, on his conaeience as a Christian physician, it would be in any way calpable, whenaladyfeU down in a flt, to put a little brandy to her Upa. "The deuce take yonr doubta, air," aaid the dootor, in a rage; " iu a caae Uke this, one soruple of brandy is worth tweuty acrnples of conscience." " May 1 be married ma ?" said a lovely girl of fifteen, to her mother the other morning.— " Married!" exclaimed the astonished matron, " what put auoh an idea into your head ?" " Little Emily, here, haa never seen a wedding, and rd like to amuse the child," replied the obliging siater, with fasoinating simplicity. A man much addicted to drinking, being ex¬ tremely ill with a fever, a consultation waa held in his bedchamber, hy three physicians, how to care the fever and abate the thirst.— " Gentlemen," he said, "IwiUtake half the trouble off your hands; you cure the fever, and I will abate the thirst myselfJ' Liberty will not deacend to a people; a people must raise themselves to liberty: it is a blessing that must he earned, hefore it can be enjoyed. .
