It was on Ihia day six years ago. Eighty- five of U9, weary wanderers over the tracklees prairies, were month after month toiling on¬ ward to this distant land cf gold, whose lofty sierras and aummer plaina have since gathered to their eternal embraces bo many a member of that gallant, youthful band. It was Sunday Jo^e wilderneis ; the wagons all ' corralled'i on the banks of th? 'Little Blue;*'the toil- worn wmlta scattered around, joyfully crop¬ ping the virgin grasa under tho watchful vigil. ancB of the guard. Some of the party were bathing in the clear stream, some cooking< mending clothea, washing, lounging, or amok¬ ing, and all enjoying to the full a glorious Bunahiny day of rest and indolence, when some evil genios posfcsaed me with the 5ud< den desire to be the firat of tho party to filay the long expected ¦ buffalo,' an animal we had not yet encountered, but which now began to ba the constant tbeme of converaation and con¬ jecture. Several of the boys were hunting turkeys in the margin of the timber which skirted tho river, ao that when I saddled up xny Bteed, and, with rifle at my saddle bow, itarted out to the northward, the few who ob- served my departure exchanged aly winks at my probable diaappointment, but never dreamed of the thrilling adventure tbat I waa so rashly rashing into. Although we kaew that we were »bout the confines of tbe Pawnee Territoriea, gnWiad indeed been warned by a convoy of trappers, whom»-we had met but a few days provious returning from their wintering ground in tbe mountaina, that their war parties were out, yet, confident in our numbers, and th^ entire inability of our unpracticed eyes to de¬ tect any traces of them, we had attributed the ffell-meant warning of the mountaineers rather to a spirit of newamoDgering than anything else, and rather despised those wild BedonJns of the prairies cf whom we had heard ao much, bat had as yet failed to seo. Faraway over the beautifully undulating and vernal bosom of the trackless prairies I rode gently along, on the qui vive for any indicationa of the object of my desires; but, though T aagerly scanned the horizon as I proceeded, not {^ living being met my eye except a few shy ^ntelopeSj whoae wary caution and quick per- Oeption rendered tbem impoasible of approach upon the open prairies. Far as the viaion ^ co^d reach, nought bat a monotonoaaly undu- \%ting surface of gently swelling and naked hills» covered only by the buffalo grass and flowers ofevery hue, extended in every direction toward the far horizon, wheu the blue sky of Snmmer kissed the distant bills, glowing in the fresh verdure of the advancing season. Struck with the voiceleaa solitude of this un¬ trodden deaertj I rode slowly along, la?ily mu¬ sing on the strange Tiscissitudes which bad ao suddenly translated me from college balls to this wild scene, and had almost imperceptibly placed some seven or eight miles between me and camp, when far in the distance, directly in frontof me, 1 discerned a column of dust which, as I aupposed, betokened the long desired buf¬ falo. Away weut romance and reflection. The ardor of the hunter took possession of me, and hastily looaiog my pistols nnd glancing at my rifle*9 lock, I struck spurs to my steed and galloped forward, never doubting that the op- poC.inity 80 ardently coveted waa now at hand. Charging down the hill and acroaa tbe inter- yening valley I rose another gently swelling roll of the prairiei and as I gained the summit, agun the moving cloud of dust met my gaie, and this time considerably nearer, and, aa 11 j, closely regarded it, I perceived that it was rap¬ idly approaching, and I began to discern the flaahing of bright objects gleaming out from its obscurity. Thia looked like bnffalo, aud as tbe object, whatever it might be, continued to approach, I halted for a better view, and was not long in making out a large band of moun. ted Indiana, their snow-white shields and bur¬ nished lance-heads glancing brightly in the morning sun. Still, however, I aoaroely thoaght of Pawnees bnt supposed it might be some hunting party of friendly Pottawatomies or Sionz; and at all events, knowing the mettle and powera of D^Htorae, and having a retreat at pleasure, I thought I ieoarred no great risk in waiting for a more satisfaotory inspection. Gradnally aoross the broad expanse of the prairii, thej dr«w nearer and nearer, now diuppearlng tna Tliw la vroniBg loat MaoMltd hoUew, Sii^ tcrv:tl which atill scjiurated the detached parties i Uil ' '^'"-^ upon wbich thcy wero rapiillj closing. Nobly the gullatit unimal responded to the call. Sunrting with terror at the wild shouts of our pursuers, trembliug iu cvt'ry limb with tbo inlenr^ity of his RXi;riions, he flew over tlje ground, »ud wilh tho floctiicsa of lhe wind, he dnshed between the approaching hordes, within a iiundrcd yurds of us ou either haud. With the energy of despuir I grasped the saddle wilh my kneea and bent furward to assist his flying course. On, on, toward the only hope of safety, fifty yelling demons hurd upon our tracks, their blankets und finery Dying iu the wind, onward we speed, pursuers and pursued o.ver the broad eipause of that prairie ocean. Soon the fleetness'ind blood ofmy American courser began to tell on the enduring but slo\Ter footed mustangs of tbe Indians. Some of thu worse mounted were gradually dropping to the rear, and after running two or tbree miles they were strung out in a loug line be¬ hind me. Gradually I slackened speed, for I well knew that the bottom and endurance of Indian horses, accu.stomed to traverse immense distance.'' at a single stretch, is almost withou* limit, and nmny a long niilt' wa>! t-fil! befor? m^. Again tliey wculd diminish the ili.^tance, iiniJ again 1 was obliged to urge my jnded steed to his he.'it efforts. But I was bepiunins to bveathe freer. ih2 6r.-:t startling alarm waa over, half the dietii.iiie was accompliihed. If my gallao' gray could but maintain his tremendous exer' tion.i for four miles more I was safe. Once in sight of camp und the prudence of my wild pursuers would glance but enco nt the eighty American rifles which would gleam from behind our wagon wheels. I was now dosceniiing a long but gentle in- cHnutlon toward a broad level depression in the prairie whicb spread out about a couple of hundred yards wido at its base. My savage pursuers were for a moment out of sight be¬ hind the ridge I had just crossed. I reached the foot of the hill at full speed, my steed plunged forward on what seemed hard ground; and, 0, despair! sank to his belly in a treacb- eroufa swamp ' Ah ! can the gutbering years of all futurity ever blot from my memory the despair of that awful moment? How far this seemingly impassable barrier extended up and down thc rivulet which divided it, I could not guess. A terrific yell burst from the exultant warriors as thay appeared over the crest of the ridge and recognized the dilemma they had too truly anticipated. Terrible fears chilled my blood. In that brief moment, as the wild savages came charging down the hill, tumul¬ tuous thoughts of home and frienda, mingled with the brigt anticipations so long cherished, of a golden futuro in the land of promise, came thronging in wild confusion throngh my teem¬ ing braiu. There was one hopo left, desperate as it seemed; bnt there was no time for delib¬ eration, no opportunity for ohoica. Resistance was madness. I was hemmed in on every side bnt one. Straight ahead was my ouly chance. I might flounder through, and, at all events, suffocation or capture in the bog was no worse than instantaneous destruction where I was.— Dashing the rowels iuto the trembling animal, I madly urged him forward. The aoil, thougb covered with grass and apparently firm, gave way at every atep. Plowing hJs wny by gigan tic efforts, now for an instant raiaing himself on some harder apot, theu sinking to his saddle girths, urged by my frantic exertions, terrified to phreniy by the appalling yells of the ap¬ proaching enemy and the shots which had be¬ gan to whistle around us, the noble animal toiled gallantly on and gained the firm bank just as tho dusky form of my pursuers, infu¬ riated at the possihle loss of their prey, were clustering on the opposite side, seeking a favor¬ able spot to follow- Their deliberation aaved me. II required a strong control of reasou to walk my failing horee slowly up the hill, while the Indian^ were floundering after me through 'he swamp. But I rightly judged that a little breathing time wonld not be wasted on him. I turned the summit of the hill juat as the diacomfited Indians were beginning to crawl out of the bog and again putting spurs to my jaded horee, once more we sprang forward in tbat mad race of life or death. Onward we rushed over hills and valleys, across streams and throngh ra¬ vines, in headlong flight, puranera and pursued* The timber which marked the camp grew more and more distinct—now for a moment concealed by an intervening hill—and again as we flew over its snmmit rising nearer and clear¬ er to view. My horse was rapidly failing; great flakes of foam fiew from his mouth.— Covered with mud and drenched with sweat he still, however, toiled gallantly onward, spurn, ing tho wild sod of the prairie with bia flying hoofs. But the goal was neariy won. Oh! if he could hold hia pace a little longer ! The tireless mustangs of the Indians no match for his fleet Umbs in a short stretch, now exhibited their wonderful powers of endurance. Onward they swept after us with undiminished speed, their unahoru mains and sweeping tails ming¬ ling with the flowing drapery of the wild riders and flying out upon the wind. The timbered banks of the 'Little Blue' whioh I had eo earnestly longed for, had been for some moments concealed by a long but gon_ tie ascent, the summit of which I waa approa¬ ching. If from here the white wogons of our camp should be visible over the uninterrupted plain I should yet reach them. But oh! if another of these interminable ridges should intervene! My poor horse was on his last legs. But to perish in sight of safety—to be taken in view of the camp by these implacable sava¬ ges I My brain teemed with these maddening doubta as I nearod the spot which was to de¬ cide my fate, and 1 trembled with eagerness for the view which might consign me to despair. I neared the summit; another bound and we were over, and were flying with faltering steps down a gentle inolination which swept away in gentle undulations to the longed-for timber still about a mile ahead. I strained my eyea for indications of my comrades; and oh! rap¬ ture unspeakable i far away, but directly be¬ fore me, nestling at the base of the long dark line of Cottonwood, in full view of the panting fagitivei loomed ap the white circle of tenia and wagon tops—dearer to my longing gaze than to the desert worn pilgrim the lofty min< ftreta and marble palaces of £uter& itory. A ihoat of tciospli ttd •xoltttioB bant vras oue forenoou accosted bj an acquaintance, aad u!tkci] what bethought of thc young ladies with whom he hnurtled. They entered iha room together, and tbe three girls were at horae, silting beside their mother, and they looked prim and demure as John Rogers at tbe stake. Our hero assumed a very grave aspect, even to dejection, aud baving looked wistfully at the clock breathed a sigh as deep as algebra and as long as a female dialogue at a street door. Hia object was achieved, and that moment the clock struck twelve. Hereupon he looked around surprised an ejaculated : * Who would have believed that and apparition would tell such a lie ?' It is believed that the differeoce is owing solely to the mode of preparation- We publish the following re¬ cipe as fumiahed by Mr. Browne. It is worthy ofthe attention ofour ogrlcultural readers: •As soou aa the bacon comea from tho butch¬ er's hands, it should haTe a covering of aalt, dried and rolled to a fine powder, well rubbed in with the hand tc every part, uaing the finger to fill every hole and joint, as it is moat impor¬ tant that thc meat should take the eait when quite fresh. Iu twelve honrs all the brine and damp salt not absorbed should be aoraped off the bacon and removed from the vessel, and dry added again, as mnoh as is needed to cover it, us before, and well tubbed in. This proceas ahould be repeated every twelve hours for three days, when saltpeter shonid be added, getting off previously all the damp salt and briue as before, and applying lho saltpete^ as the common salt, adding a handful of the latter. A quarter of a pound of saltpeter to a side of bacon weighing seventy pounds is suf¬ ficient ; then mix one pound of coarse brown sngar and one pound of treacle or molasses, and pour over tbe saltpeter on the bacon, adding a little more common salt daily for threo days, whicb serves to make the pickle keep well, and the whole liquor should be ladled with a tea-cup over the bacon as often as convenient, four times a day for the first two weeks after it was first put to bacon, and then never less than twice a day for the remainder ef the time needed for ita pickling, which is four weeks, or longer if large bacon, and then it ahonld bo sent to the drying-house and smoked over a wood fire. Delicately flavored applea should never come in contact, directly, with the soil; fpr if it containa muoh clay, or car¬ bon, it will abstract the aroma of tho apple, and render it comparatively flavorlcos ; indeed, jt will ofteu impart a grouud like Bracll and taste to fruits. Tho root crops are not so in¬ jured. Parsnips may be preserved in the maimer named for turnips ; but it ia only uecessary for the purpose of keeping them clean ami free from rains, as freezing does not injure this root, indeed, they^are not fit for use until tliey i have been frozen. Market gardeners usually leavo part of their parsnips in the ground for their early spring anles, and tboso that have been thus exposed all winter, are sweeter und better than thoae dug in the fall. Thc property of the soil for extracting odora ia ao great, that a fishy dock baried in it over night may be cooked next d:iy, aud will be found to be free from .this objectionable flavor. Dry cod-fish is often ameliorated iu flavor by such treatment. Indeed, the clothes of thosc who havo died of tbe plague, may be worn by others, without the ^efiT of communicating disease, after tbey have been buried in the soil a few hourt*.— Working Geneva, Uamburg.
