" AHD ALL THIHQS BECAME HEW I" TO A. M. &. OF COLUMBIA. BY JAMEa S. WATEIH.S. The world looked like a sew world. And all the thousand! that had wandered forth Like thirsty souls, to drink ita ricli glory io— The geperous air, brought from the opening buds, And early Sowers, and greeu leares wet with dew, An odor fioating, like a welcoming, fo ttl) whose -ense it met. Tbe invalid, Tho pale, attenuated inv&Ud, Lifted bis thin, white bands to He^rec for joy, And thought of health and atreugth. The attiean, ToUworn and weary ofhis narrow coll Wandered the green-Selda with a brighter eye, And a more rigorous step, than he bud known Por many moulhs. lie seemed in tbe free air, As ifthe morniDg's giuiiness touched hiit heart And cleaneed all fcUen buiaurs from bis blood. As old mau, too, wua tbere, amoug tba crowd, A blind old man, witb Bc&uty, silver looks, Ho loaned upon a youthful arm, and turned Hifl fligbtlesfl eye-balls to tbe clear, blue sky, And, as tho bles.-ed breezes kissed hia raised brow, His lips were moved in prayer. Cbildren were tbere, Roaming about, plncking tba wild eye flowers, tind laughing iu UDOonscioup bappineis. But thero were two light forms, amid the throng, I Qoted witb s deeper earnestness; A pale young mother, bending fondly o'er gor feebler child. Oh ! how she watched its looks, id strained ber ear to catch its plaintive words, ind sought to charnj him from hie present pain, By pointing to the blue sky, and tbe Selds, Tbo jbinlog river, and tbo happy crowd, ^nd when a faint smile hovered on his lips, Ser brightening eyee wero filled with sudden tears, Foya tribote for s heart too full for words, t turned away asd bleesed her. I dreamed, and methougbt I saw a new world, Ivhere nature bloomed resplendent, and where I Heaven's own joy dcBoend'cd over all the living—it Iiru beantiful! BaJHmore, Md., Jan. 9ih IBM. A MOTHER'S STORY. It was the ihird day afler my,, husband's funeral, said ibe widow, and 1 waa so stun- led by hia sudden deatb lhat I could do uo- iicg but sit ;md think over it, and try to •ealize how it could be so. Only the Sun- lay before, he had been sitting with me, fatching the haby^ as he sat in the aunshine, aughing and clapping hia little hands, as the ;hadowsof the trees were flung across the lare floor, and moved by the passing breeze. Tow the child was sitting in the same spot, he warm October sun streaming in on his (right curls, and making him look so pretty; 0 Uke a picture ; bm ih.i father was gone rom us forever. It seemed to me 1 must see his dear face more—that he would surely lift lhc ^toh and come in, and take up our child, sd tay, as be 'often did—"Mother, what Id you take for this little bother J"' Even the baby missed him, and would ome and stand hy my knee, calling " Papa! iKpa!" until I thought my poor heart would )reak. The two oldest children were at chool; the rest were out playing, ao that I |rM quite alone. By and by the baby was xed of his play, and came and got up into by lap. *'Mamma cry ?—mamma musn't," he lisp- td out, and wiped my wet face with his litlle | hubby hands; bnt I could only hold him ! loser to me, and then cry more bitterly. ' Just then Mr. and Mrs. Lorrimer drove up 1 their handsome carriage. They lived not a off, and were our richest neighbors.— hen I had invited them in, and had dried ^y leafs a little, they seemed at a loss how »¦ begin the convereation, but Charlie had lUd away Irom my side, and went and stood Iu.the lady's knee, and pointing to her heavy {old braclet, said—••Pretty, pretty !" in his hildish way. She took it off, and gave it |o him, sayings •"Wont you come to be my litlle boy, Char¬ ley?" ¦My mother^ heart took fright at once. fthey had no children, and seemed to feel' as plainly ss if they had told me, that they had some to ask me for one of mine. * No, no; mother couldn't spare him," I l»»id, quickly snatching bim away, almost fradely, I fear. *'My dear woman," began yr. Lorrimer, I* have you thought seriously ofihe impossi¬ bility of your getting along with five chil¬ Jren, under twelve years of age ? It has re¬ quired all your husband's efforts to make a living for you—bow can you hopo to do it without him :" ' We offer," joined iu his wife. ¦' to take the most helpless of your little ones—to give him all the advantages we would our own ohild; and surely you must see that God's hand is in it—that through ua He inlends to help you." ^ need not tell you how long I withstood all heir arguments. But at last, overcome by heir entreaties, I consented to consider the gutter. In two days tbey came for my an¬ swer. I never mentioned their visit to any pf tbe children, and I had changed my mind almost every hour since I had seen them.— j At last convinoed that it was for the child's I good, I consented to give bim up. When I Trent to dress him to go, my resolution almost ailed mc. I lingered over every article 11 put on him and made every dear curl over and 9Ter before 1 could get it to please me ; and i kissed the little white ebouiderq until they ^ere all rosy. But at length he was ready, mid I thought he never looked so pret ty. He ^«B full of animation, for he was old enough to know what it meant to "go riding," and Then came the trial of telling the whole truth to the children. None of them seemed re¬ conciled, and I felt that the worst was to come wben the two oldest should return from schooL I almost dreaded to meet them, es-: pecially waiie; hewas like hia father, so quietand calm, outwardly, bat hiding be¬ neath his apparent coldness the strongest, deepest feelings. -But the othera went to meet them as (bey came home, and I wap pleasantly disappointed in the way the old¬ est thok it. He seemed to feel that I had done it for the best, ttnd ti.«t Uk mnat hide his aorrow for my sake. He was more thought¬ ful for iny oomfort, gentler than ever, only very atill and grave. The day ended, as the longest will at-last, and it came time to go lo hed. I had takon Willie to aleep down stairs near me. Since his father's death, the other children slept just ahove us. Well when I came to lie down there was the empty pillow ! Baby had al¬ ways laid his little rosy face as close (o mine as he could get it, and slept with one little hand on my neck. All my grief broke out afresh when I thought of hini. Willie rose up at last, and said earnestly— "Mother, it'i* Charlie you are crying for, isn't it?" "Yea," X anawered, "I know it's for the best; butO! it's so hard lo give him up." " Mother," continued the child, " when father diod, we knew it was all for the best, becau.se God took htm from u? ; bnt I have been thinking ever since we laid down how poor little Charlie must be crying for 3-0u. and bow God gave him 10 us, to love aod keep him; and now you h^ve given him away. If He had meaut hini to be Mr. ancl Mra. Lorriraer's baby wouldn't He have giyen him to them at first ?" The child's words carried mote weight with lhem lhan all the arguments of my rioh neighborri. After considering a momenl, I said, impulsively— "0. if I only had him back, he should never go away again, uo matter bow poor we might be." The moon was shining <io brightly that it was almost as light as day. and presently Willie said— "Mother, it'a only half a mile across the fields, and they wont go to bed for a long time at Mr. Lorrimer's; let us go and get Charlie. Why mother, I seem to hear him crying now." Urged by the child's entreaties and the fond promptings of my own heart, I oonsent- ed. I thinki never walked half a mile so quickly in my life, and neither of ns apoke until we reached the mansion. Then we stopped a moment for breath, and sure enough, we could hear the baby screaming at the top of his voice. We went round to the aitting room door and knocked. They Leemed half-frightened when they .saw who it was, but asked us iu politely. 4 hired nurse was walking with the child up and down the fioor, trying to pacify it. Mrs. Lorrimer had weaned herself out, and was lying on a lounge. •'Come !o mother," Willie said, and lie brought the little fellow to me at onoe. " I cannot give him up," I said at last, when I could get my voice clear. "Vou must let me rake him home."' They evidently thought me the silliest of women ; but their cold words ouly made me the more determined, and we atarted back in less than half an hour after we came, I carrying the baby : Willie offered to help me, but I fell, as though I could carry him in my armo forever. When I had laid him in bed, now fast asleep, but still sobbing, and reaching out his little hands, to feel if I was there, I said, " God helping me, come what will, 1 will never part with one of my living children again, and I never did." I need not tell you how wild with joy the reat of the children were when they found the baby in bed next morning ; they almost fought over the liltle fellow, and from that day forlh it was tbeir grealest pleasure to amuse Charlie and have him with them. When the affair came to be known many blamed mc, and many favors my rich neigh¬ bors might have done me they withheld, I think, for my folly, as they called it. But a f ew poor women like myself, that had alwaya nursed their own children, said I did right. We had mauy trials, and often scarcely ^ crust of bread in the house ; but our hard¬ ships only bound us the more closely to¬ gether. All my children proved comforts and bles¬ sings lome. God took care of one for me; but as Willie said, we knew that was for the best. The rpst married in the course of time, and left me ; but the prop of my old Jay;;, the uue whose industry aad manage¬ ment gave me his plentiful and comfortable home, has never left me since the day I gave bim av/ay.— URITEDSTiTES tills.
