If tho light burns freely, it is a sign that no chukc damp is there, and the well may bu entered witb safety ; but if the ckudle burns dimly, or is extinguished, it is a sigu of danger To remove this gtiH to as to render it innoxious to tbe persou entering tho weii, ail ilnit lias to be doue is simply lo throw i(own some pieces of fresli burned lime into the water, ond agitate it with the bucket on the rope, or with a polo. Another plan is to slack the lime in a stnall heap, mix it with water iu a tub, and throw down threo or four pailsful intothe well. Or if it is desired to enter the well and not di.sturb lhe water iu it, take about balf a pailful of slacked limo. mix it quickly with cold water iu a smaH tub, amMowcrit dowu into the well by cords attached to its lugs 60 as to rest ou the surface of the water. The contents of this tub must be stin-ed up for ten minutes with a pole iu the well and thon left su&peuded for an hour. Wheu dniwnup, any person may descend tbe well with safety. The philosophy of this i.s, thatinuist Hmuhis a great affinity for oarbuuic acid gas, and it therofore absorbs it rapidly from the atmos¬ phere. If we take some freah slacked lime, and stir it up in a vessui coulainiug cold wafer, aud allow it to remain so fur fiv^e or six iiouiv*, a hard scale, like that of thin Ice, will be fouud on the top of tho water. This suuie is carbon¬ ate of lime, formeil by tbu absorption of car¬ bonic acid gas from the atmosphere (a very small quantity of carbonic acid i:* mixed with all the air we breathe) aod the scale is a thin pellicle of Btone—marble. The lime of good mortar becomes hard by returning to its former con¬ dition of limestone, by the absorption of car¬ bonic acid gas from the- afmosphcre, and the forraatiou df a thin scale of carbonate of lime on a lime vat, nifords evidence of thp manne|r ih which some of tbe sediuieutary rocks wera formed. After all thinga were sufficiently advanced to release Mrs. T, from further supervision, she went into her chamber to arrange her toilet to receive hcr husband's guests. Mr. Topham then began to express his surpriso at the absence of the Virginia rep- reaeiitutive, as ho thought he would certainly havo been one of the first, if not the first, to make his appearance, knowing that his dinner at home was an early oue. When about coming to the conclusion that the Virginia M. She wus accustomed, on occasions of special exposure to the gazo of tho fashiona¬ ble world, to prepare herself for the emergency by putting as good a face as possible upon hcr mtafortuiie, or as she termed it, * pucker¬ ing up'hor mouth. Oue day, having thus ar¬ ranged for a public promenade, she was ar¬ rested by her dutiful cook with the question, whether the mutton or the pork with which the larder was provided, ahould bo served up for dinner. After repeated unsucoeesful at¬ tempts to indicate her wiahes by various signs and contortions of countenance, she at length despairingly burst open tho carefully closed aperture ofher head with the broad and un¬ mistakeable cry of ' po—ark ;* and then basted her cook rouadly for having imposed npon her the laborious operation of puckering up her mouth again. The future i.i that which may well awaken the the most earnest solicitude, botb fortbevirtue and the perumuaiice of our ropublio. The fate uf other republics, their rise, their progress, tlieir decline and their fait, are written but too legiblo on tbe pages of history, if indeed thoy were not continuully before us in tbo startling fragments of their ruins. They have perished, and perished by their oum hands. Prosperity enervated them, corruption debaaed them, and a venal popubiee consumated their deatrnclion. They have sometimea been cheated out of their liberties by servile demagogues; sometimea be¬ trayed into a surrender of them by false patri¬ ots. They have disregarded the warning voice of their best Btoteamen; and have peraecuted anil driven from office their best friends. They have reverenced power more in its high abuses and summary movements, than in its calm and constitutional euergy. They have surrendered to faction, what belonged to tbe country.— Patronage and party, the triumph of a leader, and tbe discontents of a day, have outweighed all solid principles aud institutions of govern- nicuc. "Such are the melancholy lessons of the p;ist history «f (he republics, down to our own. Let the hiatory of the Grecian and Italian States warn us of our danger. At¬ tempts had been made to poison .ibcao rats, with partial muccl-ss, and it muy have bueu in retaliation fur thvir i»)isonoua atteui[it>*, tbat this conc-ertird rbargc wut* made.
The rai I-m tmu ut' the uio^t interebtinp: aniinala onthe globe. In Europe he maken hiHtoricul

thtir peculiar rat in tiii'ir train. Europe bus oeen the rat of theG-itbs, iboVandalu, and tbo Huati. Kurupi' nuw biid ilu ^oriuati rai and its TartaiT"'. ""d thu great rat of Ihe Paii-?iiiD sowtT in of recent date and Muscovite oriiiiu.
Tiie browu rat, otherwiso knowu tin tlit;N.ir- mau rat, has c.«.iablieibfd itself all over tlie world hy the comtnerce of civilited linn'S—it Inis bad possogaiou of frauce for the last aix or «(;veii centuries ; but within the Inst it has found its master in the Muscovite and Tartar rat, called ill TnriB the rat of Monifanuou. Tlio^u new rats, previously uukuown to Europe, deBceudcd from the heightH of tbo great central plateau of Afiia, from which the iluu aud Mongol borae- meii descended, who spread right aud left, and look pos^ieuiiitiu of Ruiuo on thu one hand and I'i'kiu ou thy otlier.
The establishment of tbe Muscovite rat in France commenced witb iho uxiirpatiou of the hrown orNtirmau rat—that rat hau almo?t dis- apjieared and ia fouud only in thu uftbineta of tlie curious collectors—while the Muscoviie rat is daily increasing in size, ferocity nnd courage. The Rusaiau rat dcTOUra the dog, the cnt, aud attacks the chili! asleep. The corpse of ft raau is a dainty fnr tliia beaat aud it always commences by eating out the eyes. [t:i looih is moat venomouj*; and (he iitffhor ft-iiiu whom we derive moat of this article stales that he b.-i.'^ known of ten cases of ttiuputatiou of the lug, necessitated hy the bite of this rjit.
The cat turns tail upon this rat, in its most ferocious state. A good rat terrier is the best destroyer, but fortunately rata are ralophogoua, eat one another, fight duels, indulge in broils and iutestitie feudd, aud grand destructive bat¬ tles. Were it otherwise, thoy would make this world au unpleasant place for man to live in. We should have to fight our way, and not un¬ frequently, Uke the Archbishop of Mayence, should be dra);;ged from our beds at midnight by an army of rata aud dovoured upou the spot.
The rat is theumbleui of misery, murder aud rajiiue—a cauuibla and a robber—devoted to lhe principle of war aud spoliation. Will it ever ilisappearV
Tlu' landlord complied, aud tbe licensed min- itler came.
'Ilu you tbe miuister?' asked the bride¬ groom.

'You will please to join bauds.*
Tho Yankee stood up by hia lady luve and seized hcr fervently by the band.
' You promise, Mr, A—,' said ihe parson, *to take this woman—' ^ * Yaas,* said the bridegroom.
' To be your lawful and wedded wife?*
' YaiiS—T/ana.''
'Tliat you will love and honor herin all things V

' Yass, indeed—iiothiu' flae!' continued tbe Yankee, iu the moat delighted and earnest manuer.
But here the reverend clergyman hailed, much to the surprise «if all present, nud to tho especial annoyance ami discomfort of the ar¬ dent bridegroom.
'One moment, my friend,* responded thorain- iaier. sbtwly: for it occurred to him that tho laws ot bir-Statu diduo£,purmit this pnfovm ani:e witluuit the publithment of the ' bauns* for a certaiu lunglh of time.
