Forcing bis horse with diffioclty to paas it, he rode with a rapid pace, and soon reached the shop, where he found several of ihe neighboring planters and the smith still busy with specalation apon the myaterious developments whirh tho lat¬ ter had witnesaed in the moruing. Mr. Stogdou related to his eager and won¬ dering listenera his adventure in the moun¬ tain, the death of one robber and the proba¬ ble discovery of many more. Iu a few hours the news spread through tbe neighborhood) and brought together a company of forty or fifty men at the shop. It was decided, with¬ oat a dissenting voice, to ascend the moan- tain and storm tbe den of thti robl>ers. Raising tbe hair he ob¬ aerved that the be?h was bloody and murh swollen. On more carefnl examination, he discovered tbat a small cord of silk had been tied so tightly around the leg that it had cut into the flesh, producing inflammation of tbe part, and doubtless, also tho lameness of the borse. The discovery at onee excited the suspicion of the workman, who was both boneat aud shrewd. Calling the attention of tbetraveler to the cord, wbicb he speedily detached from the leg of the borse, be expressed hia appre¬ hension tbat fonl play of some aort was med¬ itated. A few years hefore, he related, a rider¬ less horse had come dowu from the monn¬ tain and was fonnd to he lame from a similar cause, a tight silk csord having ont in almost to the boue of tbe animal's leg. The owner had never been heard of, and it was believed tbat he had been murdered and bis body coBcealed in tbe mountain. The Bmith saggested to Mr. Stogdon tbe precaution of examining tbe priming aud loading of bis pistols. Ou examination the flints and priming in tbe pans were fonnd to be in proper condition, but tbe loads bad been withdrawn from both barrels, and wads of clotb substituted in tbeir place. Tbe suspicions of Mr. Stogdon were fnlly aroused by tbese proofs of a premedidated design of some sort upon him. He waa a bold, brave man, however, and did not onco tbiuk either of changing bia route or of abandoning his journey across tbe monntaine. Carefally reloading and testing the reliability of his pistols, ht) bade adieu to bis honest counsellor, after suitably rewarding him for bis labor and advice, and rode oflf. The morning was already far advanced wben be began to ascend tbe mountain.— The road, for several miles, wound along ils southern side.'midway between the base and tbe summit. Tbe prospect was graud and beautiful beyond bia most sanguine anticipa¬ tions. To the rigbt the mountain sank down by degrees, abrupt or regular, to tbe margin of tbe champaign conntry below, wbich stretched out as far as the eye could reach, and was covered with tobacoo farma, corn¬ fields, dwellings, and all the diversified ob¬ jects peculiar to a Virginia landscape. On . tbe left the Blue Ridge rose up like a mighty arcb springing to meet and support the aky, exhibiting, in rich profusion, all the graud, aud moat of the beautiful features of moun¬ tain scenery. Delighted witb tbc scene, and absorbed wilh the emotions wbich it inspired, Mr, Stogdon rode slowly forward, recalling oidy occasionally, and for a momeut, the auspicious excited by the events of the morning. After running for nearly fivo miles along the side of the monntaiu, lbe road, by an abrupt turn, struck towards the summit, throagh a deep gorge, whose jagged sides slanted upward to great heights on eith r band. Shut out from tbe prospect of the subja¬ cent country, and hemmed in by steep accliv¬ ities, Mr. Stogdon reverted more frequenlly to the mysterious developments wbicb had come to light at the blacksmith's shop, and became botb alert and cautious in his move¬ ments. Arranging his pistols so that they could easily be withdrawn from the holsters, be nrged his borse to a quicker pace, aa soou as he entered the gloomy aveuue of the nar¬ row gorge. He bad goue about a milu when -he saw, some fifty yards ahead of bim, a large boul¬ der or earthy ridge, shooting nearly aoroas the avenue, and leaving only a space, broad enougb forthe road bed, between its edge and tbe stnep side of Ibei gorge. For several hours the ffre raged with unabated violence, fresb fuel being constantly supplied from tbe ajaoent wood. The smoke, having filled the cave, streamed out in dense masses aud floated off" in the direction of tbo wind to the upper heights of tbe monntain. At length tbe fire was permitted to bum down. A stream of waler issuing close by, from the side of tbe moantain, furniahed Che. ready means for cooling tbe rocks and extin¬ guishing the smouldering embers. But it waa not until a tate hour iu the evening that the smoke had escap<^d from tbe oave suffi¬ ciently to permit an entrance to be made. With lighted torches, and armed with gaoa and pistols, the crowd crept cautiously into the gloomy cavern. Tbe passage whiob led to it, widening rapidly as they advanced, Bpread out into a spacious room. Into this anti-chamber aeveral small latteral fissures or apartments opened. The cave, thoagh produced by some convulsion of nature, pos¬ sessed the regularity aud tbe proportions almost of a work of art. The floor, the sides and tbe roof were all of solid rock. The torob-light,* reddening iu tbe smoke, aud reflected feebly from the rocky surface, lit up the gloom with an obacnre radiance, whicb increased the horror of the place. The orowd advancing and dispersing with appre¬ hensive look and caatious steps, looked, amid the smoke and the sullen light, like a phan¬ tom host returning to tbeir covert in the mountain from tbe glaie of tbe outer day. Iu the large room casks, boxes and barrels were found, fllled witb meat, floar aud eata¬ bles of various kinds. In the latteral fis.nnres, beds, guns, ammunition, cooking utensils, table fnrnitnre, and, in£short, almost every¬ thing necessary forthe rudt> comfort and con¬ venience of a subterranean "dwelling,",were arranged in something like household order. WHY SO FgVr.^COEEi)., dead robberstill lay. Theblackcoatiog being I The dead bodiea of five men, of an old woman. wiped from tbe face, tbe body was recognised at once as that of tbe landlord of tbe botel at which Mr. Stogdon bad staid the night before. Tbe suspicions of tbe neighborhood, long en¬ tertained, as to his character, were now com¬ pletely confirmed. He was tbe confederate of a band of robbers, and his hotel was an outpost wbere plans were concocted and tbe selected victims disarmed and sent helpless to be robbed and murdered in tbe mountain. The body was placed upon a baggage cart and sent, with proper explanations, in tfae care ofa servant, to tbe family at tbe botel. So secretly had bis counection with the rob¬ bers been maintained, that tbe return of the corpse, and the developments wbicb followed, were the firat intimation which his wife aud ohildren had of bis criminal associations. After tbe brief delay occasioned by the ex¬ amination and removal of the body of tbe robber, the company proceeded, uuder tfae di¬ rection of Mr. Stogdou, along the lateral gorge towards the place where the confeder¬ ate robber had disappeared between tfae pro¬ jecting ledges of rock. At a point opposite the supposed care they dismounted, and, se¬ curing their borses among the hushes, began to climb up the steep acclivity. In a few moments, arriving by different routes, tbe men and dogs were all assembled at the des- ignated point. The evidences of hnman inhabitancy were unmistakable. The ground immediately in front oftbe rocks was trodden and bard. Worn paths branched off in sev¬ eral directions from the spot. Tbe entrance, a narrow passage between tbe two projecting rocks, ran inwardly, and the avenue, e»cept for a few feet al the opening, was dark and impenetr.ible to the eye. It led evideutly into a cave or subterranean shelter of aome sort, wbicb tbe company prepared at once to explore. Dry branches of trees and dead nnder- growth were gathered, tied into bundles and lighted with fir kindled by flint and tinder, Wilh these for torches, six of the more reso¬ lute men entered the opening between* the rocks, witb tbe view of exploring the inte¬ rior to whiob it led. The" pasaage was ao narrow that only two could walk abreast. Twe men in front bore torchea, as did the two in the rear. Tbe miiidly conple carried muskets heavily cbarged. As tbey advanced tbe paaaage rapidly widened, and tbe roof sprang up to a great beigbt overhead. They bad gone about twenty paces from tbe entrance when a blaze of light, accompanied by the almost simul¬ taneous report ^of fire arms, flashed forth from a diatant, interior point of the cave. The two men in front fell to the earth. Dis¬ charging their muskets in the direction of the flash, the others retreated from the cave, dragging their fallen companions after them, one of whom was serioudly wounded and the other entirely dead. Enraged at the spectacle of blood and death and of a boy, apparently fifteen or sixteen years old, lay scattered through tbe several apartments, livid and discolored iu the facei and most hideous to look upou. After making a fall exploration of tbe cave and removing from it every artiole of value, tbe crowd withdrew, leaving the bodies of the robbers'as tbey fouud them, anburied aod unrecognised. Tbe cave whioh had been their abode thus became tbtirsepulchre, and to this day the tradition oftbe asseult upon the robber's den lives in the memory of the people in that section of the Old Dominion. n.TV. T. spot favorable for an attaok by snrptise, and j the besiegers began more resolutely tbe work Mr. Stopdon fiiirmi^e.l, at once, that if one was meditated npou him, it would be at that point. Checking the pace of hla borse, there¬ fore, he rode alowly forward aud entered the narrow jass. He bad scarcely reached the middle of the defile, which waa about twenty yards in leugtb, when two men rushed from behind thv farther side of tbe boulder into the road and stood, with levelled guns, only a few yards distant from Mr. Stogdon. His borse, frightened at the sudden appearance oftbe men, wboae blackened faces and shaggy olothes made tbem look hideous enough lo startle both rider and steed, £hied and refu¬ sed lo go forward. The robbers advanced and demanded, as they approached, the purse and the valuables of the traveller, promising to spare his life, if he wonld surrender tbem without noise or resistance. Without making any reply, Mr. Stogdou quickly dr^w forth a pistol from the bolster. A derisive amile passed over the facea ofhis assailants at sight of th^ weapon. It was levelled aud firedatthe nearestrobber, vbo fell dead upon the spot. Tbe other, startled at tbe report, and terrified by tbo fall of his companion, instead of firing bis gun dropped it and fied in tbe direction from wbich be had oome. Before Mr. Stogdon coald draw and present his otber pistol, the robber had turned tbe oomer of the boulder and ivaa s^ of i^bt. Urging his horse forward witb sdme difficulty, for tbe dead body of the robber liiy in the road, and tbe animal oonld scarcely be made to pass it, He disoorered a lateral gorge enter¬ ing, from behind the boalder, tbe one along of assault upon the cave, for sucb it was now ascertained to be, andof sousiderale aize too. An effort was made to indnce the dogs to enter. The more resolute advanced a few paces, aud then ran back in apparent alarm. Tbe majority stood at tbe entrance and barked bat could not be enticed, by werds or blowa,- to ge fnrther. Another expedient was tried. A large tree was cut down and riven into bolts of consid¬ erahle length and thickness. A doable row of these timbers was placed upright across the entrance passage, some tweuty feet from tbe opening* and securely wedged and bra¬ ced, so aa to form a powerful barrioade or wall. The powder in all the borus and flasks except a few rounds reserved in each, was poured in a pile on the ground near to tbe upright limbers. Auother barricade, similar to tbe inner one,-was constracted iu front and oloaotto tbe powder, a train being first laid from the pile, through a notch in the timbers, to tbe outer edge-of tbebl|^cade. A liue of dry leavea was formed, extending from tbe powder several feet oalside tbe en¬ trance. The crowd having retired to i safe distance, or bid behind trees and rooks, the train of leayeawas fired by aman who quickly gained tbe shelter of a large tree'olose by tbe cava. Happisess—How Secpeed.—Tbe happiness of man is still the prime question. What is it ? Where ia it? How ahall we reach it?— And whila it is a, qaestion it will show that we have not yet found it. Mankind ia usu¬ ally divided into two large classes; some¬ timea as rich aod poor, or healthy and un¬ healthy, or workers and idlera, or fortunate tbiok-skulls and unfortunate geniuses, or borrowers and lenders; and the anthor of each new classification maybe safely aat down ia the miserable half; we may be pretty sure that he considers himself an nnforlutiate gen~ ias^ and has borrowed money which he cau¬ not pay. Perhaps writing i.s^a good safety- valve for his n iaery. Many people wish to have repose withoat j fatigue ; a mind interested without an aim; ibe aunshlne of tbe morning withoat tbe pre¬ vious darkness, which is its foil. This, of eourae, oannot be; we must aearoh for our own honey, because we prize very lightly that whioh Is got without effort. I am as bappy now as I ever have been, and I have lived thirty years. The reason is simple; and ont of it comes a naw classifica¬ tion—those wbo begin Ufe bnmbly, and tbose who begin Ufe proudly. The generaUty of nnhappy people whom I have seeu, are those who have been too happy when they were young ; and the poor, regretful song is, from Qoethe downwards, ''Give, O give rae back my youtb." When sitting down at the feast they have begun at the desert, aud rendered their stomachs unlit for plain food. They imagined tbey were to Uve always on wine and sweetmeats; and they got disappointed when the brown bread was set before them. The best way, if we could have tbe cboice of it, ia to begiu low down. To me, yoath ap¬ pears A very miserable time, fall of poverty aud hard usage. Schooled in adversity, I begau early not to expect too much, and for the most part I bave beeu agreeably disap¬ pointed—^the resnlt exceeding roy expeota- tiona; the good wjne Uaa, providentially, he^in kept t^l tl^y last.
