"HIS -WIFE'S SISTEE.' An elegant and philosophical writer aays: "Man'B life is only a jonmeV ^'<>°^ o°^ ^o^d woman's breast to another." Itwas probablj the object of the aulhor to refer partioularly to the mother and wife. As the number of stop¬ ping places is not limited, however, I chose to accept the most catholic interpretation. I be¬ lieve that what the world usnally calls "in¬ constancy " is only tbe effort of natnre to progress toward perfect affinities. If man in bis jouruey of Ufe stops at a good many ports, it stands to reason that be will acquire a mucb better knowledge of the world, and will event¬ ually " lay np " in the best haven. Let me give you a modified illustration of my idea. I bave a friend wbo bas been subjective to a tbeory of pnrely physical progression. His first and earliest affection was for Curls. He became acquaiuted at theageof teu years witb a set of twelve, large ones at tbat. This capil¬ lary attraolion, if I may so term it, was not lasting. A Voice, belonging to another and otberwise plain young woman, nest occupied tbe reverberating chambers of bis beart. It was not a fine voice, hut it waa a positive one, and his was a negative. Now, you see, Curls bad a negative voice, and df course two nega¬ tives badn't any attraction. Hence Ms de¬ flection. Then a Bust attracted bis undivided attention. It was followed by Eyes and Moutb, wbicb by au nnusuai phenomenon occurred in tbe same in lividaal; they were botb positives and my frieuds own eyes and mouth were negatives, proposing to tbem, but was provi¬ dentially saved. Heuce his new variatiou. He came very near by tbe interposition of an Ankle. He flirted with the Ankle for some time, bnt an ankle not being a regular feature, of course it wasn't lasting. Need I iuform the reader tbat bad he met the positive aud nega¬ tive peculiarities combined iu one peraon, be would have fallen in love al once and recognized his affinity. That's what be was looking for. Hence his hesitation, and wbat tbe world fool¬ ishly call his—" inconstancy." I merely instance this *' physical " illustra¬ tion as being the moat forcible and common. Mental and moral pecnliaiiiies are met in tbe same way, and are much more difficult to com¬ bine. Of course tbero are some exceplions to tbe above theory. Indistinctive people are an exception. Yon may take a stick of wood and saw it into a nnmber of pieces, aud you sball find no difficulty in fitting any of tbe pieces togetber. Bnt tako anolher stick, and break it several times, and you must find tbe parUcnlar adjunct if yon wish to Join two iu one. Now indistinctive people are tbe sawn blocks ; they come naturally together. Tbe broken pieces are men and womeu of strongly marked opposite characters, wilb negative and positive dispositions, fitting eacb other and showing tbat in the normal state they were one disliuct creation. Not uufieqneutly tbere is some unnatural matching. A wortby friend of mine, with a smooth, indistinctive surface, married one of the broken pieces; tbe conse¬ quence was obvious ; attraction has wom off her salient features, and sbe bas become like lum. But when two broken surfaces meet, that don't fit—there's trouble and business for tbe lawyers at once. I would like to give you au illustration of anotber exception, ju£t for its moral. Every fitory should bave a moral or develop some pe¬ culiar idea—but how ofteu do we accept the moral. When our surgical frieud strips tbe walls of this once living temple, and lays bare its wonderful internal structure; however ir¬ reverent the aot, we pardon it for tbe good t£at shall accrue to mau thereby. But when tbe novelist, wiih hia little scalpel, cuts into the character of bia opposite neighbor, or his dear frieud, aud exhibits their internal organ¬ ism, or shows up bia o*n idiosyncrasies, we never recognize ourselves tberein. Tbat's quite anotber affair, of course. Wben my friend Dick was about thirty years of age, be bad amassed a little fortune. He bad flirted a good deal in bis time, and was rather a wild young fellow. But nnder bis superficial qualities and mauly exterior, there was a large, bonest boy's heart. Wbetbef it bad ever been trampled npon or bad tbe im*. presslon of some woman's small foot sonb in it, la of Uttle consequence. But I do not think ^ Mb heart waa that kind of primitive formation that hold the rellca of by-gone days in Its oold fosailiferous atralnm. If Dick bad ever had an "aff^decffiup" he had forgotten it. He was wbat we term blase-, we-wbo know notMng about it Diok did not object to the epithet^be rather liked it, as we au do-^and I think be cultivated an ennuyer tir. There were some frienda of Diok's present,' bnt :the bride waa an orpbui, and faer only relative, a yonnger sister lived in a distant State. - He took faer to a rioh a Inzurions home. He felt that be.had done tiie oorreot ;and gentlemanly thing. In every respeot, and when ¦ he had led her . Into the softly oarpeted parlor of their fashionable bower, it was witb a feeling of placid self- congratnlation. The foollab, simple bride threw her aims abont her husband's neok and said to htm— " Oh, Dick I how oau I thank yon ?" Dick was touched and felt.an imaginary halo suspend itself over hia Olympian brow. Tbere were no transports with Dick. Tbe honeymoon passed qnietly and evenly. He had not expected to be extravagantly blissful —^his dream, if one had ever -fashiooed and shaped bis inner man, was deceitful, and.fae knew it. Hia wife was all to him that be had sought, it seemed—but yet tbe possession of her love did not seem fraught with the strange fascination tfaat fae bad often conceived in bis early days. There was sometbing wanted. He would never lat ber know it; oh no, it would spoil his perfeot saoriflce. Bnt perhaps it was tbis consciousness that placed a deeper chasm betwixt bis wife's affections and his own. He felt he had another's happiness in Ms keeping! and be resolved to guard it aa preciously aa his own. This state of affairs, as you may readily imagine, thongh very romantic, put Mm upon a forced and unnatural behaviour, whioh added anotfaer million of miles to that awful ohasm. And Diok sometimes fonnd himself sitting opposite to her in her comfort¬ able parlor, and wondering if tbat strange woman was bis wife. There was tbe contour of tbe face, that bad baunted fais boyish vis¬ ions ; there was tbe same soft voice and win¬ ning accent—and yet why wasn't he happier ? why wasn't fae grateful 7 wfaat was the mean¬ ing of tfaat awful barrier tbat lay between tbem ? Wby was he doing tbe Spartan busi¬ ness, and all that sort of thing ? He wonld get up at sucfa times and go over to tbe neat womanly figure, and gaze into her eyes and kiss ber red lips, and say, " Are yon bappy, my dear ?" and tben sfae wonld look back an answer, and would say, " Are younot, Dick?'> Dick would say empbatically, " Cerlainly, my dear I" with a great deal of unnecessary de¬ cision. A time came when Diok's wife was sot able to visit much, and kept faer room a great deal; and Diok learned tbat this younger sister of her's would visit her, and for certain reasons, the viait would be very opportune; and it was witb tbat strange flutter which the conscious¬ ness of a coming event occasions in tbe breast of the expectant parent, tfaat Dick was sitting by himaelf iu the little library before the fire. Her cbair—for sbe was wont to bring her work in and ait witfa faer fauahand while fae read— was standing oppoaite, and faer work basket was still upou tfae table. He was trying to analyze the strange sensations tbat were thronging upon bim, a looking forward to a happier state of being, when it occurred to him tbat be might assist Ms reflections by smoking. He drew out his cigar case, bit ofi tbe end of a fragrant Havana, and looked aronnd for a bit of paper to light it. His eye fell on his wife's basket. Tbere was a wMte paper sticking out of a obaotio scramble of .various colored fragments. He took itnp. It seemed to be a lettA-. He was about replacing it wben his eye oangbt a paaaage containing bis own name. I have told you that Diok waa tbe soul of honor. If be faad knowu tfaat fais wife didn't want him to read the letter, he wouldn't have read it. If he faad imagined for a nroment that it contained anything fae shouldn't read, or auy secret of his wife's, he would have sat and blinked at it all day, or perhaps faave walked up stairs with it and handed it to ber, saying: " My dear, you faave left a letter be¬ low. I don't know wbat it is, or who it's frou!," and would bave departed dramatioally. It was at once his torture and bis orown to minister to the invalid wants of the real wife of his manfaood iu oom¬ pany with the fair young ideal wife of Ms yonth. It was Ms great glory to feel the touoh of her warm, soft hand on his brow, when he sometimes sat alone distractedly, groping blindly in tbe darkness for aome clue to lead bim away from the pitfalls tbat beaetfais path. He could not help seeing that fae faad awak¬ ened a sympathetic interest in ''Tip's " young heart—a feeling as yet undefined and holy in its nameless orphan purity. But tbe sacrifice was not complete. They were sitting alone in the little library, and sbe sat opposite to bim In his wife's cbair. He raised his eves and she drew faer obair nearer to bim, aud in her simple, artless way, asked Ms forgiveness I " For what. Tip ?" '* Well, never mind; say you'll forgive me. I once thought worse of yon tban you de¬ served, and I may have said sometMng to Mary; did she tell you anything ?" Dick could conscitiutionsly wave a uegative. ^'I've changed my mind aince, brother I— You're so different. I am sure I kuow of no one who could make Mary happier tban you. I judge ao by what I have seen of yon and mj own feelings, for you know, Mary and I are all tbat are left of our family. Do yon think we are alike ? I tfaink lhat I shall never marry, for I could not fiod anotber like Mary's husband." The artless aimplioity and genuine aincerity of poor Tip extorted a groan from Dick. Inatantly ahe was at his side. " Don't wor¬ ry, brother, abont Mary,' abe will be better soon. I know bow you feel*, dear, and it must be a comfort to Mary to know your sympathy," How shall I end my story, reader ? Shall I say tbat Tip was again wrong; tbat Mary did not get better ? Tfaat sfae lingered for a while, and striving to bring a feeble, immortal soul into tbis earthly ligbt, laid down ber own dear woman's life, a willing sacrifice npon the altar. Shall I say that Tip an>i Dick stood by holding faer hands, wben the firat cry of tbe struggling immortal heralded faer way to the home it jnst had quitted ? How that the poor motherless ofaild found a guardian augel in Tip. How else can I marry Dick to his wife's sister ? Itt^ A STOUYFOETHE LITTLE FOLKS. THE WONDERFUL INKSTAND. "This was a long and difficult piece of wprk," said Edward Muller the copyist as he folded up nearly thirty full sheets of manu¬ script. "Itbas taken me many hours, and I bave written as neatly as I could ; so I hope the Government Seoretary will pay me well for it. I onght to bave at least fonr dollars for my labor. Bnt be lives near our house and I will soon find ont my remuneration." "Oh replied Gertrude, Ms wife, "I do hope he wlU pay you better than he has been doing. Really wehave no reason to complain ; many people are muoh worse off tban we are." So saying Edward made ready to oall with fais manuscript at the house of the Secretary. As fae took down his hat, he saw the tfanmb- wom volume of his favorite author, Thomas a Eempis ; and opening it at one of the best chapters, he placed it npou hta wife's Up tbat she might read it In his abaence. These were theflrst words her eyes fell upon: "There are many people who are impatient and vexed if matters do not oocur according to their wiah. It ia not alwaya in our power to make our way amo^b ; it ia God's to give wbeu be will, to whom be will, and aa much aa he will —aud no more." Gertrude was much encouraged, and a new ligfat aeemed to have aprung up in' her soul. She cotild read no more: it was enough to think about that day, iAai we human beings haye no right to. meddle with God's business, Edward had not gone two biooks before fae met a messenger with a large letter addressed to faim. But it must be done; yes, tbirtydbl- lars must be borrowed. It was easily raised', for there waa not a man in the whole oity wfao would not trust Edward Muller for any amonnt of money. At the end of three days he found himself in the Blue Star Hotel at Prague.— Having rested and taken some refreshments, he commenced tfae searoh for his uncle's dwelling. Several hours passed by before he oould flud it. At last he found itiu a very dirty and obscure alley. The door was ajar and nobody In the faouae.. Truly It did not look like a rich man's home, but I have Inti¬ mated that ita owner waa a miaer and that ex¬ plains all. . Every artlole of the homely, bro¬ ken furniture was covered with thick dirt. . I do not tfaink tfae fioor faad been swept for a year. Loose papers and old raga were scat¬ tered abont everywhere. Bnt not a sign of money could be found save a few coppers in an old vest. Every corner was searched and notfa¬ ing was visible tfaat was wortfa taking away. Four days did Edward oontinue tbe searoh, aud finally he faad to give up Ms task witbout suc¬ cess. The last day he was tbere a neighbor called in and told him tbat bis uncle sold all his bouses and landa tfae previons year, and having put the money for tfaem in a large obest, he set out for Egypt; be only returned the otfaer day and the fever was un Mm of which he died ; he brought nothing back' with Mm except tbose old rags and papera yon aee scattered about. That was melancholy newa for Edward, but it was vain for him to remain longer. No one can tell how heavy fais faeart waa when be went home again and had to tell Gertrude that all'their hopea were blighted. "And did you bring nothing from your un¬ cle's honse 7" ahe asked in a tone of sadness. "Nothing save tbia inkstand, though it ia hardly wortb its weigfat in oak leaves. I thought I would bring it home as a memento of our rich relative. It is of very thick glass and is hard ebony wood, Gertrude, isn't thia Widow Shulz'a daugbter f" " Ah, yea, Edward. Her poor motber died of a broken heart while jou were at Prague, aud no one would take her child, owing to her father's defrauding the government. So I went and brought bef faere. I tfaink we cau manage to support faer." " A noble act, Gertrude; it repays me for my disappointment. We faave stern dnties to meet. The ten tfaonsand dollar bond I can never *pay; Ifae thirty dollara I borrowed can not be relumed immediately. Wbat we ahall do our Heavenly Fatfaer only knows. Mpy he faelp us to bear wbatever fate awaits us." Edward and Ms wife curtailed their expen¬ aea to their real necessities- They resolved to drink no more tea or coffee, and only eat meat twice a week. They both worked nigbt and day to supply tbeir wants. But tbe time was athand wben tbe bond mnst be paid. Where will the money eome from ? That was a quesiion of bouily conversation and medita¬ tion. They could think of but little elae, and dreamed about it every nigfat. Still they iJe- lieved God would deliver tbem and preserve tfaeir little faome to tfaem. Finally tfae dread¬ ful day came and tfaree officers presented tfaemselvea atthe poor man's cottage. Edward invited them In and told theni all that had happened. He implored their mercy anotfaer month, another week; but all to no avail. Tbey said it waa not in tfaeir power to sfaow any leniency, they were servants of tfae law and bad to obey ila commands. So tfaey com¬ menced to pack up tfae various articles of furniture preparatory to taking them to tfae auciion room. Gretchen, the little adopted girl, became frightened at the officera, and in running by tbe table knocked off the inkstand that Edward had bronght froni Prague The ink flew all over faer clotfaea aud the inkstand was broken by its fall. The snn waa shining brightly through the window, and amid the fragments tbere shown the most beautifnl ob¬ ject that any one tbere had ever seen. It was a—magnificent diamond! It told ita owu slory. The wealtfa that Edward Muller's rich uncle faad taken away was exchanged by falm for that diamoud, and he bad concealed it in tbe inkstand between tbe glass and the wood. Its posseaaor was now the richest mau In tbe kingdom. The chief officer interrupted the legal proceedings and beckoned to Ms oom- panions that it was time for tbem to leave. The family were alone. Tfae first tfaing done iu tbat household was tfae singing ofMartln Luther's grand faymu, "A sure ft)rtreBS in our Qod." Tfaey eacfa kneeled iu pr&yer, ahd little Gretofaen—al¬ ways lovely but now lovelier because she was tbe instrument, of deliverance—folded her Iiands as directed and tried to speak faer pray¬ er. But she oould not, and the falling tears catching in faer -browncurls looked' like dew- drops on tfae flowers of Spring. Sfae was in reference to tfae things of this life, what mauy alitlle child<ffin be in regard to the more im. portant matters of eternity.
