New iJolland. D. Everybody has heard of the horrible dearness ofEngland! 'The word *'rfear" conveys a very bad idea lo the minda of most people, and lo the poor it is often a word of dreadful import. There was a time when we could boast of chi;apnes3 of our own country. I believe it is pretty well understood, at fast, that the excessive issue of bank paper for some years past bas had rauch to do with prices, with cheap and deur. As to cheap and dear, 1 shall from time to time give such information as to the relative prices iu England and the Uni¬ ted States as come under my noiice. Few subjects are more important than those embraced in the words cheap and dear,— The causes of cheapness and dearness are well worihy the greaiest attentiun. Dear bread, dear meals, dear fruits, all ihings dear, are generally found in those coun¬ tries where monopoly has gathered the blessings into the laps of a few, and sown the curses broadest among the residue of tbe people. April 16.1845. lm.20 It is a great pity ihat the working-peo¬ ple in the Uniled States will not at once shake ofl their chains, combine, turn their backs upon men and women made by tai¬ lors and milliners, set up a taste of their own, and dress appropriately, consistently, with their means and employment. For this it is not necessary that they should vear a uniform, or discard beauty and taste, or reject anything but twadiy finery and things out of proportion. No man knows what he can do till he has tried, and the same is true of the millions of common people and common laborers. There is no doubt, not the least, but that we are on the highroad to a better lot. In the Uniled States, certainly, there is noth¬ ing wanted but education, the will, the de- termination, the raoralforce of temperance, industry, and rightousness ; the combin¬ ing together, as all people do who mean to exert Uieir power to auy advantage. To e.xpect auy great amelioration from caucu¬ ses, elections, laws, or political movements without a corresponding change in these respects, is childish. If the people of theUnited States would keep the forms of beauty and utility con¬ stantly before their eyes, llieir bills at the milliner's and tailor's wuuld bc far more moderate; nor would they empty their pockets, as they have been accustomed to do, in those of the grocer and tavern-keep¬ er. When we come to add up the amount of money misspent in anyimportant partic¬ ular, it seems incredible that so much can be wasted in such a way. To the Taxable Inhabilanta of LeWOASTER COUNTy. Description | The Lancaster Examiner and Herald was published weekly in Lancaster, Pa., during the middle years of the nineteenth century. By digitizing the years 1834-1872, patrons are provided with a view of politics and events of this tumultuous period from a liberal political slant, providing balance to the more conservative perspective of the Intelligencer-Journal, which was recently digitized by Penn State. |

It is a great pity ihat the working-peo¬ ple in the Uniled States will not at once shake ofl their chains, combine, turn their backs upon men and women made by tai¬ lors and milliners, set up a taste of their own, and dress appropriately, consistently, with their means and employment.
