Long before the European race hnd any knowl¬ edge of ihc New world, it had been irhabited by a numerous race, whose gradual decrease and extinction seems inevitable, and has been and t'l an incxhaustable thcmo of reflection with somo thinking and benevolent men; and who, by an easy transition, are cliarging the cause of this decrease, as a crime of no ordina¬ ry hue to the whites. If not out of place here, a question, on this point, might bo raised and answered. But it M'ould bo too episodic. When Coliimbns discovered America, ho found the aboriginal nations numerous; and having, as he thought, readied tbe eastern shore of India, bo ealled tbo wild race, huliaJts-. To ^notice incidentally more tban two of thesonu- mcrous nations, is not compatible wilb tbo wri¬ ter's design. The Lenni Lenajte, called Drla- 7oarC3,hy the English, and Aqnanuschioitii tbe formrr signifying. The original people, ibc lat¬ ter, " Thc united people," can only be mention¬ ed. The Lcnopo were divided into three tribes: Unami, Wnnalachtihos, and IVIonseys; lho two former iuhnljitcd iliu country between the sea and Blue mountains—eastward as far us the Hudson ; and westward lo tbo Potomac. Tbo warlike Monseys occupied ilio regions be¬ tween tbc Blue mouninins and lhe sources of tbe Susquehanna and Delaware rivers. At the first settlement of Pennsylvania, tbc Dilaivarf tribes were the Atsunpink or Stony Creek Indians; Andastakas,nt Christiana,Del¬ aware ; Neskamanies, Bucks connty. Pa.; Sha- kaviaxons, Kensington, Pa.; Maiitas, Burling¬ ton, N. J.; Tntcloes Txn^ Nanticokes,m\'\T- giiiia and Maryland. (Tbo Nanticobes, at a later period moved higher up the Susquehanna). The Monseys or Mimsi7iks,x\ca.t Easton; the Mandts and Narrtticongs, near Earitan, N. J.; tho Capitanasscs, Foniptons and Gacheos, in. N. J. Several clans of tbo Mingoes were liv¬ ing scattered amongst tbe Delawares. Frond's Pi/. zV, 291. The Aqaanuschioni, i. e. '* The Unitetl peo¬ ple," called Iroijnois by the French; Mengif< by the Delawares; Maqnas by tho Dutch; Minquaas by the early Swedish setilers ; Min¬ goes by tho English and Americans, were a confederate nation, consisting of Mohawks, Oneidas, Onondagas, Cayugas, and Scnecas— the Tuscaroras being expelled from the Soutli, were adopted in 171.3 or I-l, by ibo Iroquois, who possessed the country north of Pennsylva-, Ilia, about Ibo lakes Erie, Ontario, extending westward lo ibe Mississippi, and sniithward to the Obio. Oiher nations and tribes were con¬ nected with the Dclnicares and Irotfuois—some of them had united with them httfore, and oth¬ ers after, William Penn's first arrival in the provinces; of tbe latter wero the Shawanese and Ganawese, Giinawoiaa or Conoy Indians, settled fur some time in Lancaater county. Wiu.iAM Penn, grandson of Giles Penn, and son of Sir Wiinam Penn, an English Admiral, ¦wbo commanded tbe British fieet in Oliver Cromwell's lime, and in the early reign of Charies II; having obtained a gram for a largo tract of land, in America, from Cbarles, fui services rendered, by his father,—having re¬ ceived a charter, dated March dth, 1G8], made sales of lands to adventurers, called _first pnr¬ cliasers, who embarked tbe same year for " Fen7isylvania," so called, by ihe King, in honor of Atlmiral Penn. Among tbe first colonists was Markham, ap¬ pointed deputy governor nf the province, wbo soon after bis arrival, conformable to Iiis in¬ structions from the proprietary, held a treaty with tbe Indians, to procure tbeir lands peace¬ ably, ibns following the example of Calvert, a catholic, in 1G34, who planted a colony in Maryland; of Williams, a baptist, 163G, in Rhode Island ; of tbe Swedes when landing at Inlopen, 1637; of Philip Carterel, IOCS, Gov¬ ernor of New Jersey. Markham's treaty wiih tho Indians was held in June, 1C82, and bo purchased lands from lhem on the Delaware river, as appears from a deed dated July 15, 1C62, signed on tho part of the Indians, by Idquahon, lannottowe, Idquo- quey won, Sahoppc for himself and OUonicbon. Swampissc, Nahoosey, Tomackhickow, Wcs- kektitt and Talawis, Indian Shackamaker, (sa-i chems or chiefs). William Penn, the proprietary, sailed for America, and landed at New Castle, on the 27ih Oct., 1GS2—and before his return to Englandt 16S-1, held jwrsonaliy similar treaties wiih the Indians, adopting measures to purchase thq lands on tbc Susquehannah, from lho Five Naiions, who pretended a right to tbem,—hav ing, as they asserted, confxueied tho Indians formerly settled there. The Just treaty betwceij Penn, in propria persona, now Kensington) Dec. 14, 1CS2. The sachems and warrior* there, met Penn uuder tbo shade of a colcbra¬ ted elm tree. Penu was plainly dressed, not distinguisJicd by arms or insignia of power, ex¬ cept by a blue sash. A peaceful uain of Qua¬ kers, llis retinue, holding in bis bands a parch¬ ment containing tbo treaty of amity and of purchase. Tbis was a treaty standing single in the annals of the couniry. It was just and adhered to, and the prosperity of tho colony was not aflerwards, for many years, disturbed by Indian hostilities. Penn having determined before long to re¬ turn to England, and not having time person¬ ally to visit the hearths of the Indians, engaged Governor Dongan, of New York, to purchase from lhem,"all that tract of land lying on both sides of the river Susquehanna, lakes adjacent, in or near tbo province of Pennsylvania."— Dongan efl'ected a purchase, and conveyed the same to Penn, for one hundred jiounds sterling. —SmilWs Laws II, 111. Aparty claiming to be interested, demurred ; they would by no means acquiesce. To satisfy them, Penn on his return to America, in I70I met them and others in council. After a treaty aud several speeches, these Indians ratified and , -confirmed Governor Dongan's deed- The de¬ murring parly were the Sasquehannah Indians, wbom, with their adopted neighbors, it is pro¬ posed to briefly notice, beforo introducing tbe Atticles of Agreeinent. The Sasquehannah Mintjuays or Conostogo Indians (Col. Ree, IT, 9) lived nt Iiuiian Town, Conoauigoe Manor, a place noted in tbe annals of Pennsylvania for its numerous councils and treaties; and as tba arena of an exparte san¬ guinary conflict « Doing sterner deeds of blood,—laying waste by torch and fagot—reck¬ ing blood and curiing smoke closed the scene," The trne origin of the Conostogoes is not easily ascertained. Gov. Keith, who paid thera an officfal -visit in 1722, says : " The Conoatogoe Iridians were formerly a part of the Five Na¬ tions, called Mingoes, and speak tho same lan¬ guage to this day: that they actually pay tribute now to the Five Nations, and either from natu¬ ral affection or fear, are ever under their influ¬ ence and power," CoL Ree. Allusion is had to none other than the I Shawancse (Shawannah, Shawanos or Sawa- i^os, the same, different only in orthography) meaning literally in the Delaware language the South. As Shasaaneu, tho south: Shawana- eJiaii, tbe souiii wind—now commonly called Shaiaanese, These camo from the soutb, aot- ded near the Conostogoes, in 1GS9. In the minutes of the Provincial Councils of Pa., vol. til, p. -l?!, it stands wriiten: "August 25, 1732—at a council held in, tho preaence of Thomas Penn and others—Conrad Weiser, In icrpretor—about sixty families of the Sbawa- lieso, wbo were settled to tho Southward, came up to Couostogoe, about thirty-five years aincej and desired leave of tho Sasquahannah Indiansi who were planted thore, to settle on that river- Uiat those Sasquahannah Indians applied lothia government that they might accordingly settle, and that they would becomo answerable for tbeir good behavior. That our late proprietor arriving soon aftor (1701), the chief of the Shawancse and of the Sasquehannahs came to Philadelphia and renewed their application; that the proprietor agreed to their aettlementj and the Shawaneso thereupon camo under thc protection of tbis government; that from that timo greater numbers of the samo Indians fol¬ lowed them, and settled on tbo Sasquebannab ind Delaware ; that as tbey had joined them selves to the Sasquehannah Indians Avho were dependant on tbo Fivo Nations, ibey thereby fell also under their protection." j The Shawncso occnpied a town, called Po' qnehan or Peqnea, on tho Susquehannah, a few miles below tbo mouth of the Conestogo. Af¬ terwards tbey left there, settled for a short limo in Louther or Paxton Manor, the lower end of Cumberland county—tbence they went, in open violation of a treaty held with them in 1701, a copy of wbich had been furnished them at the timo, and joincil the French, " aiding, assisting and abetting " n nation not at amity witb tbo crown. Early His. W. P., Ap. p. IGl. The Concsiogoes liad also another afliliatcd clan, wbo were contiguous neighbors, the Ga 7iajc-rse, Gangawesc or Conoy tribo ; sometimes called Piscatawas, wlio came to Pennsylvania in 1700, lived at a place, called DicaneagaJi or Connrjnhcra, between Conestogoe and Faxton, Hanisburg. At a council beld, June Gtb, 170G, jGovcrnor Evans says ; " That theso Indians, then called Garimoese or Piscataway Indians, about five years ago wlwrt they came to settle .within tbis government, came to Philadelphia in company with those of Conestogoe, and tbe Shawanoise, who engaged lo our government for lheir peaceable deiJoriment nnd behavior amongst us. Onco upon a time, about * Sixty years since,' or perhaps more, an English noblemen married a farmer's daughter. Tbis was tho Earl of Exeter, who had becn disgusted with fashion¬ able life, on account of the infidelity and disre¬ putable behavior of his born wife, from whom ho at last procured a divorce. After this, ho journeyed about incognito, somewhat after the manner of Burcbill, in the Vicar of Wakefield, cteterraincd, with a certain wilful eccentricity, which is said lo belong to his order, to look for a gentle and moro obedient wife among the humble daughters of the land—ono who would love him for himself alone. Thus wandering about—a sentimental pilgrim in search of a new eensation—he sojourned for a time in tho house of Farmer Hoggins of the village of ^odnet in Shropshire. Here he fell in love iWith the farmer's eldest daughter, Miss Hog¬ gins, (Phoibus, what a name !) a fair, simple- hearted girl—a good specimen of England's lowly born but bGautiful coantry maidens. He proposed for her, ot last, and thongh nobody knew wbo be was or whence he camo, his agreeable manners and his apparent possession of a little competence, bad due weight wiih thc family—the more readily that Mias Hoggins herself sincerely returned the aitacbment of ber modest suitor. In snch a case—aa Tommy Moore says— When once tho young heart of a maiden is stolen, TUe maiden herteif will steal after it soon:" and so,'in a little time, her father having con¬ sented aad Miss Hoggins having very sensibly changed her name for one that he assumed for tbe occasion—Cecil—we believe—she set off with her bridegroom for his distant residence. They traveled over the hills and faraway for a great many hours, till at last they came by Stamford, and passing through, stopped before the gates of Burleigh Park. Open the latter flew, as the bridegroom popped his head out of the chaise, and on they went, through a grand avenue of trees, till tbey reached tbe front of tbe EarPs baronial Halt, when be alighted and handing out his bewildered bride, told her that was Burleigh House—her husband was a bolted Earl—and she was Countess of Exeter ! They say the poor girl was so affected by the shock of this wonderful surprise thatsbe never recovered it; but died very soon after, leaving berhus¬ band inconsoloblo and tho touching pathos of ber story to tbo heart of generations to come.— And it has not been lost on our bright-souled poets,—for, all English speaking bards are ours. Description | The Lancaster Examiner and Herald was published weekly in Lancaster, Pa., during the middle years of the nineteenth century. By digitizing the years 1834-1872, patrons are provided with a view of politics and events of this tumultuous period from a liberal political slant, providing balance to the more conservative perspective of the Intelligencer-Journal, which was recently digitized by Penn State. |
