Among friends and with near and dear relatives, all the ordinary restraints of conventionalism aic thrown aside. Every action and motive is revealed, and a perfect re¬ liability 13 felt, ibat such revelation will here- gardcd as sacred. In the multidude of cases it id so. The coiifidence of social life is rarely beirayed, allhough there ore sad exceptions. We can conceive of no enormity mure culpa¬ ble, more deplorable than a revelation of thc irusis of friendship^and ofthe character allu dcd to. To steal into ihe confidence o{ a felluw- being, of a friend or neighbor, to win upon uis feelings, and worm out his secreis—all under lhe mask ot triendship—and then to betray those secrets to iho world—nay, to exaggeraie and pervert them, ia a social delinquency and deliberate wickedness, from which all who are iruly high-minded and virtuous must shrink with horror. It involves the double guilt ol ireachery and hypocrisy. It perverts the holy' privilege uf friendship to the basest purpose, .lUd stabs at ihe victim, when he not only lecisi i suspects, but when he leans and relies upon ihe : base and guilty hand, as thai of an adviser and \ a companion. L»'.tf, liicrc la anoiher description ot social, treachery, which is far more common. We: .¦illude IO the disposition whii.h prevails so gen- : erally, to listen lo the frank and unpremeditated i remarks of anoiher—remarks made in his own family circle, aud thus on privileged, if not hai lowed ground—and then to go forth into socieiy and repeat them. Thc repetition, too, is often made in a.i unkind spirit. The manner is changed or misrepresented, and thus what was meant in jest or playfulness, is converted into a serious matter, and is made the cause of irri¬ tation or ill-will. The iudle tattlers ot" ihe hour, who are ever on the waich for some hadiy remark, and who eagerly caich il up, and bear it from ear to ear, arc not only common iiuisan-, COS, hut they are worse. They are the distur¬ bers of quiet and happy homes—they are the .'omenters of discord and disunion among friends —ihcy arc eilher lhe iboughiless or ihe malig¬ nant causes of scandal, calumny, bitterness and feud, Alas! how many of thise aro lo bt- iuund, not only in every great metropolis, bm in every lillle village. They hasten from door to duor, aa if bent on mischief. The slightest whisper of slander is magnified^into someihing serious, and thus by nods and shrugs, and strange surmises, reputations are trifled with, characters are assailed, and household circles are rendered miserable. Should it not he regarded as a duty on the part of those who aro admitted to the confi dent-e ol Iriends and families, wno are made parlies to their secrets, and befure whom man} 'hings are said not intended lor the general ear of lhe world—is it not a duty on the part of ali iuch, lo avoid the repetition, even of harsh re¬ marks, or the betrayal of any single circum¬ stance thai was evidenily made known in a spir¬ it oi confidence I Is it not a hoartless and treacherous ocrupa tion, to repeat language that was meant only lor lhe private car, if ihe ropciition be calculated to injure the repuialion of the original uiiercr, oi IU wound lhe feelings of another ?—Is it not thc policy; ail well of benevolence, as ol wisdom lo afford as much pleasure as possiblo in thit A'orld, and inflict as littie pain I If wo cannoi -aysjmething kind and generous ol those wiih *vhom «e mix and mingle, had we not better huid our loNsuca and remain silent ? If we can* not brighten ihc repuiaiion of those immediate¬ ly around us, why should we engage in the un pleasant task ol sullying and darkening? All havo errors and infirmdiiies, an all, ihelore.kare liable to mistakes. It is impossible to keep watch and guard upon ourselves at all momenis, while there are many, moreover, who are quick, impulsive, and thoughilcss, and who indsed, of¬ ten say things which they do not really mean. It is cruel, therefore, to take advantage oi such, t'j gain their confidence and enjoy their triendship, nnd yet a^uae boih to their advan- lage. The deareei ties, the most sacred at- ¦ acbmenis, the holiest bonds, have been sunder¬ ed by this species of wanton hypocrisy and Heartless treachery. The little things of iiie iro often pregnant with mighty consequences.— ' \ remark made in confidence, and repealed in , .1 viciou?, jealous, or malignant spirit—nay, ii ! repeated at all, will often open tho door ior mis j construction, and lead to misunderstandings, thai | years of atter eflorta will not fully reconcile Nothing wounds ao deeply as the slight, or un¬ merited censure ofa friend. Nothing ranklet so keenly in the human heart, aa n belief or impression that one lo whom we have been in lhe habit of turning wiih confidence for a long period, and ol whose faith, good-will, and sin¬ cerity we never emertained a doubt, has said Qt done something, either calculated to destroy ihe kindly ft;eling at a blow, or to throw a suspicion upon his conduct fur ever after. And yet ihia ih .he bitter fruit of social treachery. A word or hini, a suggesiion aiiribuied to a friend, and cafculated to annoy or to wound, will ofien dis urb an intimacy, and rupture bonds ihat have jxisied closely and kindly for years. The apirit hat would deliberately engage in this foul work, and with tbe malevolent purpose of e.-vciting :4uspicion, or destroying confidence and good will, Is at once despicable, demoniac. lis tro¬ phies are severed bonds—its triumphs are broken hearts. Kr Nationa in a ainte of war are like individ¬ uals in a state of intoxication; they frequently coniract debtswhcn drunk, which ihey are ob¬ liged 10 pay when sober. 5Cr There are hundreds of pecple who be¬ come very religious when they think danger is nigh. We know of a man who fell off a bridge across a certain river, and just aa he found that he mii.1t go, and no help for it, he bawled out, at the top of his voice—" Lord have mercy on me—attd ijuick too .'" 5Cr A sensible writer says, that lo occupy one'."? mind with a matter ih.Ttaianda out in opcr. antagonism to common sense and all ihc princi¬ ples that guide us in the affairs oflife, is lo trifle with the faculties which the Creator has given to us for a wiser and better purpose. JKtNo reputation can ho permanent which doea not spring from principle, and he who would maintain a good name should be mainly solicitous to maintain a good character void of offence to¬ ward God and man. fr^ A young sapling is easily bent or straight¬ ened, and the tree will remain so. Vou should iherefore learn what is right while young. T wait till yonerow old, islike waiting to B'.raight en a iree iill full grown. But weare getting ahead ofour story, and with the reader's permission we will go back n few years and introduce him to the wife of Mr. Paul. She, too, was an uncommon cha-acter, z great, good naiured, handsome romp, who used to attend Si-hool on purpose, to use her owi; phraso. " to plague Master Jerry." And verily ilie was a plague. She used to bounce in ano OUl whenever she pleased .-sht: pinched the bojs, inked the faces oftbe girls, and finally, to such a pitch did her audaciiy arrive, that she even presumed to lay hands on the nicely adjusted cui: ofthe dominie himself. Jeremiah was leaning over his desk in a mus¬ ing altitude, engaged in profound maihemaiical calculation respecting the probable value of the lenant ofhis landlord's pigsty, when this out¬ rage look place. He had already placed iht;' sui'ject in a half dozen diirereni attitudes befor-j his mind's eye, and was just on the point olj commilling his lucubrations to the fragments cl! «laie, upon which his elbow was reeling, when | vigorous jerk at lhe hairy appendage of bis pericranium, started him bolt upright in a miir uie, and drew from him a cry not unlike that of the very animal which was the subject of his sfieniific cogiiations. Jeremiah did not awear, (br he was an eveni- piary and church-goingpedagogue ; but his coun icjiance actually blackened with rage ajid an¬ guish, ashe giized hurriedly and earnestlyarouijd llim; and lhe ill-snppressed laughter of his disciples added not a litlfe to his chagrin. ' Who ? who I who 7 1 say." He could nr- liculate no more. He was nearly choked wiili passion. " Th.ii great ugly girl there who pinches me so," said a Utile ragged urchin, with a dirty face- Jeremiah conironied the fair delinquent, bui t was plain, from his manner, that ho would raiher have ur.dertaken the correction ot the whole .school beside, than that of the incorrigible offender in question. Ilia interrogating glance *vii3 met by a look in w-hic i it would have been JillicuU to say wheiher good humor or imperti¬ nence predominated. " Did you meddle with mv cue/" said the dominie: but his voice trembled, his situaiion was peculiarly awkward. " I—I—what do you suppose I want of your cue?" and a queer amile played along her moulh, for a pretty onc she had, and what wns worse the dominie himseU" thought eo. Jere niiah, seeing ihat he wos aboul to lose his auth¬ ority, nhemincd twice, shook his head ai f^urh m the rogues us wi^re laughing immoderaiely at their master's perplexiiy, and reaching his hand 10 his lerulc, said, "Give me your hand, iMiss." Uis heart misgave him as he siioke. The liiir white hand ^^i\a insmntly prolfered. and ri.- ^t-ntly loo as that of a modern belle at a coii! nm party. Jeremiah took it; it wus a preuy hand ; a very preity hand ; and then her face, ihere was something in its expression which eel- doni failed lo di.aarm the pedagogue's anger.- He looked first at her hand then a: her fdcu, e.\- pretsive ofa roguish confidence, then at hia fer¬ ule, a heavy instrument of ton ure, emirely un¬ fit to liold companionship wiiU the .soft I'nit liand held in durance before h'm. Never, ii. •ill the annals of his birchen auihoriiy had Jere miah Paul experienced sucb perplexity. Ht hfied up his right hand two or three times, and aft ofion withdrew it. " You will not strike me," said the girl. There was an artless confidence in ihese wordd, and the tone in which they were uttered ihai went to tbe heart of the pedagogue. Like .Mark Antony before the heautiful Cleopatra, or lhe fierce leader of the Volscii before his own Virgin, the dominie relented. "Iff pardon you for this offence, you will conduct yourself more prudently in future?"— " I hope I shall," said the pnident young la¬ dy, and the master evinced hib affeclionate so¬ licitude forthe welfare of his pupil, by pressing lhe hand he had imprisoned, and ihe fair owiiei expressed her gratitude for such condescension by returning the pressure. They were married just six months alter wards. So much for leniiy in school discipline. gratitude.' The honeat man received the piecea of gold and placed them in hia pocket, and then took off! his clothes and descended into the water. Cut after a long and careful search, he came out ol of the well to ask the siranger on which side the gem had f.iljen, when lo ! he loas gone! and the poor countryman waa wilhout sheep, or donkey, or clothing—there all alone by tho brink of a deep well—and the robbers were all far away with the trophies of their artful roguery. Xaking Wild Animals. In converaation wiih a gentleman who had crossed lhe plains lo-CaUfornia, he informed us of a curious mode of shooiing the antelope. His pariy had often tried to thooi one, but they were so timorous they never cnuld get within shooiing distance of them. They met a paitj in which there was a U. S, Officer, and to him mentioned the difficuhy of gelling a shot ai an antelope. Oh, saya he, it ia the most easy ihing in the world, I w'illshow you how to do it Next day ihey saw a troop of antelopes, and tlie U. S. Officer approached as near as he thought prudent, before ihey woudi take flight, he thun laid down on the ground, waved a hand- kerchief, .-md made some antic movements.— i'he antelopes having their bump of curiosity exciied, approached nearer and nearer to see he row, until they were within 30 rods, when bang went ihe rifle and down camo a fine buck. By manccavering in this manner with a troop ol antelopes, the party never afterwards had much irouble in alluring them to within the ranse ol thu deadly American rifle. There are various modes of enticing and cap- taring im^ects, fishes, and animals. The naturalist catches many kinds of nighi moihs (males only) by exposing a light in his room. Fishes are enticed by light; and a French¬ man invented a complex machine, with lamps, reflectors, and nets, to catch them. Salmon are caught hy one man holding a blazing torch close 10 the waier, and another striking the mesmer* 'zed lish with a spear ; this is the plan practised to take fish in many of our lakes. Birds are also ihua attracted, as in the prac¬ tice of lowbelling; where the birds arc wuken- :d by a bell, and lured by a flame into a nct. As to animals. It seems a providential thing, hat' while the fiercer animals, as lions, tigers, V-c, are afraid to approach fire, many other Kinds, uselul fur food, are attracted by it. The Chinese catch ruts by holding a iight he¬ fore their holes, and killing them when they come to look at it. In reference to curiosity in general, all ani¬ mals are inquishtve, and attracted by any pecu¬ liar action or sight to which they are not accus¬ tomed, and which is not eo violent as to drive tliem away.
