THE EVENTS OF A NIGHT- When Martin Luther, conversing with a friend, walked in the field at Eisleben. and sud¬ denly beheld the partner of hia thoughts siruck lo tbe earlb by lighlning—a livid corpse, what were hia feelings! Or, how excited was tho mind of Michael Angelo, wben, in his silent chamber of the Medici mansion, hc pursued his immortal labors at midnight, with opened coffins and ghastly mortal remains around him, to assist ihe work¬ ings of hisgCDius.' You havo read, moreover, of tho Hebridian fisher who descended a horrible precipice in search i \ eagle's eggs; and, swinging in mid air, was .packed by the enraged birds—a ihrll ling circu. mance which blanched his dark locks anddeprivtV him, for a time, of reason- But you bave never heard the story ot that night; and none gave I can lell it. Give me, then, your best aliention, and do not doubt me, for I do not doubt myself. I had taken supper, and found pleasure in it. Amiable with the finely flavored cofTee, and fresh Finnon haddocks, I rang my bell. " Now, landlady," I said, "suppose I lurn in. And by the way, I was raiher cold, last nigh(. If you would give me anoiher blanket I'd thank you.' "Eh I yes. sir; ye'II no' fash me !" And good Misircss Wilson departed. Shu was a kind Scoichsoul, and therefore I had not hesitated 10 prefer my request. Presenily she told me ali \va,t ready. I look my candleaiick, i bade her good-nii;hi, and in a second was in my i chamber. Before jumping into bed, 1 studiously arran¬ ged several little articles which I had collected in my rambles. I had lately arrived at Leith from Rotterdam, and being fresh from Water¬ loo, I naturally wished to " straighten ''the va¬ rious relics, etc., which I had broufiht in my cofre. Mrs. Wilson had loaned me o drawer, and buaineas began. The chestnuts from Hou- gomont, tho French eagles, the views of La Haye Sainte, Mont St. Jean, La Montague du Lion, etc., were severally placed in my drawer, legether with guide-books, pockel-coropafis, ond other et ca:tera. " Nou) I'll to bed !" Wiih ihat thought my outer shelJ was epecdily cast off. I did my de¬ votions, and turned off the gas. Tbo ne.\t mo¬ ment 1 leapt into bed. Come gentle sleep, etherial mildnefs, come. Exquisite warm sheets ! I plunged my feel down inio their recesses. How delicious ! how Heavens ! what was it ? What could it be my right iout encouotored ? Frozen with vague horror, I sprang from the bed. My brain posi¬ tively whirled; my teeth chatiered—but not with cold. Cold \ O, I would rather step upon an iceberg, than again experience the thrill which I then endured. There was some object JD-the bed. A rude grasp, a secret robber, would have chilled me lees. Its mysterious feel was notof aught human Momentary relapse into a despenilo mood, and my spirit said within me, "Get in again* and kick it out 1" Kick out—what 2 Searching in the dark, I at last found a chair. My next thought was 10 examine my foot.—^ No! it wasRoMacerated—not even scratched. True, I had not at the moment experienced a sense of pain; but so horrible a surprise would not allow of it. Menial excitement often dead¬ ens physical sufTering. Yet, as I believed, there was no laceration. I could noi detect the flow of blood; and, though in the dark, I could havo felt this. With hands clasped on my forehead,! strove to think. What wero my best recollections of the contact I I remembered that the left fooi had touched nothing, hut as tbe leg went down it received a gentle rub. I recollected al¬ so, that the sole of my right foot had been visit¬ ed witfa tfae teeling ofhot breath, aa though it were tbe breath of an animal. But then it had uot touched any rough or furry creature. At this point, impressed with a dread of the super¬ natural, I removed my chair to tho most remote corner of ibe room, and there pursued my train of reflection.. Waa it a sleeping cat ? Entangled in ono of the sheets, its fur might have been covered. I called to mind many instances of cats which> for the warmth had crept into beds. Still, one ao rudely aroused would have extended its claws; and I—had I heen wounded 7 Not to the best of my belief. In the first place, 1 waa confident that.the plunge of my feet would havo awakened such an animal- Its impulse then would be to bound away. But no movement apparent to the oar had taken place! On thc oiher hand.— There were two married ladies staying at tho house. One of ihem had a small baby.— Her servant-maid had been enjoined to put that precious infant to bed. 1 had heard this through my opened door at tho moment the supper was served. Before taking supper, I had accidentally caught a glimpse ofthe servant girl en route Xa her miatresB's aparlmeni, and her physiognomy caused me to ihink her a stupid, blundering iaas. I invariably carry.) It was bar¬ ren ! not a siaglo match remained ! What should I do T To cross the spacious landing, and to reach tfae kitchen, wa3 an early ihougfat. The fire would perhaps be Bmpnldering.;, I might perchance obtain what I required, Mrs. Wilson's maicfaea I could not hope to iindj I knew not their locallly. The glare ofthe light would erouao the Bleepera^; and • then—tho second married lady waa, I had heard Mrs. Wilson say, fearful of fire ; and I felt persuaded that, after tho manner of otbers whom I know, ehe slept with faer room ajar ! I foil for my cane,—the one which I had brought from Hougomont. Desperate, I thought of striking the coverlet until that object moved. But suppose it were an infant ! Ah ! 1 could pass my cane gently over ihe surface, and do no harm. 1 approached the bed, and did so. Then, startitig back, my summoned resolution left me; I know, Ijelt, that the object was atill there ! With a heating heart, I dressed myaelf as I could, and cautiously feeling my way to thc sit¬ ting-room, lay down on the sofa, and drew my coat over rae. Fora lime I was unable to sleep ; my nervea were too much strained ; at length I dropped off into an uneasy siumber. Tho clock of an adjacent church struck four. I awoke. Morning had come ; golden and sil¬ ver rays were flashing through lhe crevices of the shutters- I arose—with a. perfect memory of last night's occurrences—shook myself, and [reassured by the day] proceeded to my cham¬ ber. I was not at ease when I entered. I stopped on the threshold, but at last I slowly went in.— With bated breath I approached the bed. Oh ! shall I ever erase from memory that revelation T Ghoul! vampire! monsters misshapen, and creatures charged to freeze the blood! The February numher of tho American Far¬ mer contains the following recipe i Composition for rendering Boots and Shoes Water Proo/—"Take 1 pint of boiled linseed oil, 2 or. of bees-wax, 2 oz. spiritt.of iurpetuine and 2 oz. of Burgundy pitch. Xet ihem be cdi^e- fully melted over a slow fire.' "With this mf«- luro new shoce and boots are to he ruhhed in thfe sun, or at a Hllle distance fromthe fire,;.witl»a sponge or brush. This operation ahall "be re- ppated without warning them as often as they become dry .until they are fully saturated ; which will require four or fivo limes brushing by this, (he leather becomes impervious to water. The hoot or shoe, thus prepared, lasts much longer than common leather ; ii acquires such pliability and softness, ihat it will never shrivel, nor grow ha-d. and in that state, is the most effect¬ ual preventative against colds, &c. It is neces¬ sary to remark that shoes and boots, thus pre¬ pared, ought to be warn, until they become perfectly dry and elastic ; as in the contrary tase the leather will become too soft, and wear out much sooner ifaan it otherwise would." Tbe Editor of the Farmer endorses this as follows: We have tried the effect of the eompoaition made agreeably to this recipe, and can vouch for its rendering leather water proof. In order to teat it, we procured a very new pair of shoes, gave them Ave successive rubbings with it, al¬ lowing sufficient time between each for the com- poiition lo become dry. After the laat had be^ come perfectly absorbed by the leather we placed oneof the ahoea in a iub partially filled with water, and left It thotu for -it hours. When we took the sboo out, it was as dry as when we first placed It in the tub ; the efiect of the composition is, that while it renders the water-proof, in the broadest seifse of the term, it makes it soft and pliant, and therefore iha more elastic and dura¬ ble. From our ejcperience in the wear of shoes made water-proof, we have no hesitancy in say¬ ing that a pair thus treated will last aa long as two pair that may be worn without it. Anoiher recipe for the same purpose is the following:— Put a pint of best sperm oil in a atone bottle; cut into small shreds a piece of an old india rub¬ ber shoe and add to the oil by dropping in a small quantity at a time, until tbe oil hae dis¬ solved as much as it will take up, which may be known by thc gum remaining at tfae bottom.— During tfais process keep the bottle in a warm place, as upon the kitchen mantel and occasion, ally upon the atove when not too hot. After the oil is well saturated with gum whic^^ it will be in a few weeks, wash the boots clean and etand them in a level trough or tub ofwater so aato cover them nearly up tothe crimpage attho instep. Whenihorouehlyeoaked, [with¬ out handling them so as to put ibem out of shape,] set thom up to drain, and when half dried, oil them well over tho surface, wiihout rubbing in, and sot them aside till perfectly dry. Repeat ihe process five or six times and thoy will become perfectly waterproof, yet soft and plioble. The boots may be worn between the several applications, but not until perfectly dry. Tfaoeo who desire a first rate arlicle for rough use, may find it an advantage to get their boots made of French kip-skin and have them care¬ fully prepared as above before using them. The only objection to this process is that lhe pores of the leather being filled with gum the boots have eomewhat tho same efifect as ovar- hocs in heating the feet. Rats.—A gentleman residing in a neighbor¬ ing town has related to us the following story about rata. He ownedapair of horses which he valued, and of wfaicfa he took the care faimself Every day he supplied them plentifully with grain, but to his surprise, instead of thriving on this treatment, ihey grow perceptibly poorer.— He was at a loss to account for this, aa thcy evi¬ dently had good appetites. They alwaya waited impatiently for their feed, and wfaen it wag poured into ifae manger, they would thrust their noses into it, and oat with great eagerness.— But they aoon became so lean and bony that it was evident that there was something wrong either in tho animals themselves, or thc manner of their feeding. Tho owner at length resolved to Slay in the barn and watch them while eating. He accordingly stationed himself near thehor¬ ses, after having tilled the manger with oats, but so contrived to screen his person as not to be easily seen. Tho horses dropped their noses imo lhe grain, as usual, with avidity, and began to eat with a will. As soon, however, as quiet was restored in the barn—broken only by the monstrous "crauncfaing" sounds of hungry hor¬ ses, busy at their feed—the gentleman observed the latter to cease suddenly from feeding, and Btart back suddenly from the manger, with a snort of pain or afirigbt. Peeping cautiously over into "the manger, he eaw five or aix enor¬ mous rats, who were ravenously devouring the pain ; and as soon aa the horses ventured, with {he evident hesitation and misgiving inspired by a little experience, to approach the manger and again insert.their noses in the grain, these fero¬ cious creatures would spriog at ihem and bite their lips* In this way the game went on~the horses, prompted by hunger, occasionally ma¬ king an effort to get a momhful ofthe grain, and tharalB as regularly driving them back/until, in a very short time, the oats were entirely de¬ voured by these pi-rat-ical savages, and the poor horiies left empty I Another fact, which transpired in a town near Harlford, will serve, to illustrate the sagacity ol rata. A gemleman, whose house, was infested by Ihese ,\ermen, made a journey with htB fam¬ ily to a distant' city, and carefully fastened up everythins in hia house during hia absence. At a considerable distance from his house, and be¬ yond a amall mterveniog hiU.was sithatedn large factory. Returning home after an absence of a week, he reached his residence at nightfall.— The next morning, at daybreak, he went to the factory above mentioned.. There had beena light fall ol snow in the night, and before reach¬ ing the factory he observed innumerable email tracks of animals, leading ia the direclion ol his honae. Tracing them farther, he fotind them to proceed from the factory, and lo lead in a broad trail, diresily to hie houBO.
