I always make it a rule never to patronize those who appear to be running be¬ hind hand. There is generally some risk in helping those who woa'l help ifaemselvea." *' Very true; and as ray wife desires me to see about a pair of ahoea for her this morning, I will follow your example and call upon Smilh. He is no great favorite of mine, however—an idle, quarrelsome fellow." "And yethe seome to be getting ahead in the world," answered the farmer, "ond lara willing 10 give him a lift. But I,have anerrand Bt the butcher's. I will not detain you." Atlhe butcher's Ihey met the neighbor who waa the subject of their previous conversation. He certainly presented rather a shabby nppeair ance, and in his choice of meal there was a-re¬ gard to economy which did noi escape the ob_ servationot farmer White. After passing re¬ marks, ihe poor shoemaker look his departiire, and the butcher opeued his account book wilh a somewhat anxioua air, aaying, aa he chafed ihe bit of meat— " I believe it ia time that neighbor Thompson and I come to a eettlement. Short aeconnts make long friends." " No time to lose, I should say," remarked lhe farmer. "IndeedI Have you heard of any trouble, neighbor White?" "No; I have heard nothing; but a man has the use of his own eyes, you know; and I nev¬ er tmst any one wilh money who is evidently going down hill." " Quile right; aud I will send in ray bill this evening. I have only delayed on acconnt ot the sickness the poor man haa had in his family al* winter. I suppose he must have run behind a liltle, but slill I must take care of number one." "Speaking of Thompson, are you?" observ¬ ed a bystander, who appeared to lake an inter¬ est inthe conversation. " Going down hill, is he? I must look out for myself, then. He owes me quite a snug sum for leather. I did intend to give him another mohth*s credit, but on the whole I guess ihe money would be safer in my own pocket." Here the four worthies sepamied, each with his mind filicd with the affairs of neighbor Thompson, the probability that he was eotng down hiil, and thc besi way ol giving him a push. In another pari of the little village similar scenes were passing. '* I declare," exclaimed Mrs. Bennett, the dressmaker, to a favorite assistant, as she has¬ tily withdrew her head from the window, whence she had been gazing on the passers-by; " ifthere isnot Mrs. Thompson, the shoema¬ ker's wife, coming up the slops with a parcel in her hand. She wanis me to do her work, I sup. pose, but I think it would be a venture. Every one says they are running down hili, and ii is a chance ifl cvot goi my pay." " She always has paid us promptly," was the reply. " True ; but that was in the days ofher pros-' perity. f cannot aiford to run any risk." The enirance of Mrs. Thompson preventd fur¬ lber conversation. She was evidently surprised ai lbe refusal of .Mrs. Bennett to do any work for her ; but as great pressure of business was pleaded aa onex- cuse, there was nothing to bc aaid* and ahe soon took her leave. Another application proved equally unsuccessful. It was strange how busy the village dressmakers had suddenly become. On the way home, the poor shoemaker's wife met tho teacher ofa small school inthe neigh-, borhood, where two ofher children attended. " Ah, Mrs. Thompson, Iam glad to see yon," was the salutation. " I was about cailmg at your house. Would il be convenieni to settle our lillle account this afternoon ?" " Our accouni !" was lhe sorprised reply, ** Surely the term has not yet expired 1" " Only halfof it; but my present rule is to collect my money at thai time. It is n plan which many leacbers have adopted of late." " I was not swore that there had been any change in your rules, and Ihave made arrange¬ menls to meet your bill at the usnal time. I fear that it will net be in my power to do sd' sooner-" •* The countenance of the teacher showed great disappointmeni, and as she passed on in a diflerent direction, ehe muttered to her¬ self— " Just as I expected. Perhaps I may get a pair of shoes or two for payment for the half-quarter, if I man oge right; but it will never do lo go on in this woy." A little disappointed by hec interview with the teacher, Mrs. Thompson stepped into a neigh boring grocery to purchase some trifling article of family stores. ... " 1 have a little account againat you- Will it be convenient for Mr. Thompson to settle it ibis evening 7" asked the polite shopkeeper as he produced the desired ariiclo. *' Is it his usual timo forsQiiling?" was again the surprised inquiry. Her perplexity was increased by Hnding her fausband wilh two bills in hia hand and a coun¬ tenance expressive of anxiety and concern. Undo Joshua, hut how is this to be done T Bills which I did not expect to be called upon to meet for the next three months are pouring in upon me. My best customers are leaving mc for a more fortunate rival. In short. Iam on the brink of ruin, and nought bm miracle can save'me.*' "A mirocle which is very easily wrought tlicn, I imagine, my good friend. What is the amountof your debts, which press so heavily upon you, and how soon in (he common course of evenis, could you discharge them ?" They do not exceed one hundred dollars,'* replied the shoemaker; "and wilh my usual run of work, I could make all right in three or four months." We will eay six," was the anawer. *'I will advance you one hnndred aud fifty dollars for six months. Pny overy cent you owe, and with the remainder ofthe money make some elight addi¬ tion or improvement in your shop or house, and pol everything aboul the grounds in its usual neat order. Try this plan for a few weeks, and we will see what effect it ha? upon our worlhy neighbors. No, no, never mind thanking me.- I am only, trying a tittle experiment on human nature. 1 know you of old, and have no doubt that my money is safe in your handa." Weeks passed by. The advice of Uncle Joshua had..been strictly lollowed, and the change in the shoemaker's prospects was in¬ deed wonderful."- He was now spoken of as one of the raodt thriving men in the village, and many marvellous stories were told to accouni for the sudden alteration in his affairs. It was generaUy agreed that a distant relative had bequeathed tojhim a legacy, which had en¬ tirely relieved him of hia pecuniary difficulties. Thcy had never before realized the beauty and dnrability of his work. The poliie^bulcher se- 'ected the best pieces of meat forhis inspection, as fao entered, and was totally indiferent as to the time of payment. The teacher accompanied the children home totea, and spoke in high lerms of ibeir improvement, pronouncing them among her beat scholars. Tho dress-maker sud¬ denly fonnd herself free from the great press for work, and in a friendly note expressed her desire to oblige Mrs. Thompson in any way in faer power. *' Juat as I expecied, " exclaimed Uncle Josbtm, rubbing his handa exultingly, qs tbo grateful shoemaker called upon him at the expi¬ ration of six months, with the raoney which had been loaned in the honr of need. '*JubI as I expected. A strange world! They are ready to pnah a man up faill if he seems to be oscendmg andjust as ready to push him down, ifthey find that his face is lurned thst way. In future, neighborThompson.'Ioteverything around you wear an air of prosperity, and you will be sure to prosper." And wiih a satisfied air. Facts in Natural Histort.—The rattle, snake finds a superior foe in the deer ond black snake. Whenever a buck discovers a riaule snake in aBiiuatiori wbich invites nttack, he loses no time in prepsring for battle. He makea 10 wiihin ten or twelve feet of the snake, then leaps lorward and aims to sever the body of the snake wilh his sharp and bifurcated hoofs. The firsl onset is commonly succesful, but if other¬ wise, the buck repeats ibe trial till be cuts the snake in twain. The rapidity and iaiality of his skillful manoeuverfl leavea bal a single chance for its. victim eilher to escape or lo inject poison into iis more alert antagonist. The rattlo snake also fiods a dreaded opponent in the black snako.— Such is the celerity of motion, not only in run¬ ning, but in entwining itself ajqun'd its viciim, thai the rattle anake has no way of escaping from its fatal embrace. When the black and rattle snake aro about to meet for battle, the former darts forward at ihe height of bia speed and alrikea at the neck of the latter with imerring certainty, leaving a foot or two of the iipper pari of his body at liberty. In aci instant he encircles him with five or six folds, and then atops and looks the srangled and gasping foe in the face to ascertain the effect prodaced upon his corseted body. Ifhe shows signsof life, the coils are multiplied, and the screw tightened-^the opera¬ tor all the while narrowly watching the counte¬ nance ofthe hopeleas victim.. Thus the two re¬ main SUor 40raiaut9s; the executioner then slackens one coil, noticing at-the same time weiber any signs of life appear; if bo, the coil isresnmedand retained nntil the incarcerated wretch is completely lifeless. " That looks bad, V exclaimed fcmier Wbiio. with an expiesaive ehake of ibe head.-M he passed a neglected garden and broken down. tence, in ooo of hia daily walks.
" Bad" enough." wai the reply of the compan¬ ion to wbom tho remark was addressed. .,:,_, ... ¦* Neighbor Thompson appears to beranniog down hill preity fast. I can remember when everything around his little place was trim and lidy." ~ .'.¦
" IJc always appeared 10 uc a steady, indnfl- irjoua man,'* rejoined tho second ^aker.' *"I have a pair of boois on my feei at ihisjnbmeat of his make, and lhey have done me good ser¬ vice."
•*i have generally employed himfocmyself nnd family," was the reply; " and | moat con¬ tesi' he is Q good workman ; but, nevertheless, I believe I shall step into Jack Smith's this morning, and order a pair of bobte, of which I sland in need. I always make it a rule never to patronize those who appear to be running be¬ hind hand. There is generally some risk in helping those who woa'l help ifaemselvea."
*' Very true; and as ray wife desires me to see about a pair of ahoea for her this morning, I will follow your example and call upon Smilh. He is no great favorite of mine, however—an idle, quarrelsome fellow."
"And yethe seome to be getting ahead in the world," answered the farmer, "ond lara willing 10 give him a lift. But I,have anerrand Bt the butcher's. I will not detain you."
Atlhe butcher's Ihey met the neighbor who waa the subject of their previous conversation. He certainly presented rather a shabby nppeair ance, and in his choice of meal there was a-re¬ gard to economy which did noi escape the ob_ servationot farmer White. After passing re¬ marks, ihe poor shoemaker look his departiire, and the butcher opeued his account book wilh a somewhat anxioua air, aaying, aa he chafed ihe bit of meat—
" I believe it ia time that neighbor Thompson and I come to a eettlement. Short aeconnts make long friends."
" No time to lose, I should say," remarked lhe farmer.
"IndeedI Have you heard of any trouble, neighbor White?"
"No; I have heard nothing; but a man has the use of his own eyes, you know; and I nev¬ er tmst any one wilh money who is evidently going down hill."
" Quile right; aud I will send in ray bill this evening. I did intend to give him another mohth*s credit, but on the whole I guess ihe money would be safer in my own pocket."
Here the four worthies sepamied, each with his mind filicd with the affairs of neighbor Thompson, the probability that he was eotng down hiil, and thc besi way ol giving him a push.
Every one says they are running down hili, and ii is a chance ifl cvot goi my pay."
" She always has paid us promptly," was the reply.
" True ; but that was in the days ofher pros-' perity. f cannot aiford to run any risk."
The enirance of Mrs.
Would il be convenieni to settle our lillle account this afternoon ?"
" Our accouni !" was lhe sorprised reply, ** Surely the term has not yet expired 1"
" Only halfof it; but my present rule is to collect my money at thai time. It is n plan which many leacbers have adopted of late."
" I was not swore that there had been any change in your rules, and Ihave made arrange¬ menls to meet your bill at the usnal time. I fear that it will net be in my power to do sd' sooner-"
•* The countenance of the teacher showed great disappointmeni, and as she passed on in a diflerent direction, ehe muttered to her¬ self—
" Just as I expected. I never shall see a cenl- Everybody says they are going down hill. I must get rid of the children in some way. Perhaps I may get a pair of shoes or two for payment for the half-quarter, if I man oge right; but it will never do lo go on in this woy."
A little disappointed by hec interview with the teacher, Mrs.
'• Well, not exactly j bnt money is very tight just now, and I ara anxious to get all tbat ia due me. Tn future I intend'to keep short accounts. There is a liule bill, if yoa would like to look atiil.. .1 will call around thia evening. Il is but a Email afiair."
•' Thiny dollars is no small sum lo us just now," ihought Airs. Thompson, as shothought- fnlly pursued her way loward faome. '
*'It seems strange that all these paymenla must be met just now, while we are struggling to recover from ibe heavy expenses of the win- ler. I cannot understand it."
Her perplexity was increased by Hnding her fausband wilh two bills in hia hand and a coun¬ tenance expressive of anxiety and concern.
"Look, Mary," he said as he entered.— "Here are two unexpected calls for money ; one from the doctor^ and the other from the dealer in leaiher from whom I purchased my

My best customers are leaving mc for a more fortunate rival. In short. Iam on the brink of ruin, and nought bm miracle can save'me.*'
"A mirocle which is very easily wrought tlicn, I imagine, my good friend. What is the amountof your debts, which press so heavily upon you, and how soon in (he common course of evenis, could you discharge them ?"
They do not exceed one hundred dollars,'* replied the shoemaker; "and wilh my usual run of work, I could make all right in three or four months."
We will eay six," was the anawer. 1 know you of old, and have no doubt that my money is safe in your handa."
Weeks passed by.
Uncle Joshua placed his money in his pocket book; ready tomeet some oiher claim npon his benev

The World is Ronxn.—" I remember well,' said Tom, " that circumstance—my uncle when I came from school, asked me among ma¬ ny other questions, if the earlh was round 1"

The mocasmis destroyed in the same way.
