A genlleman of New York, formerly of this section, relaied the following inciiient, while we were enjoying ilie Iwxnry of a cool sea breeao on a hot stimmet's uight. The subject of <ion- Tersation was, the narrow escapes from death that are often experienr.eii hy mantind in the lips antl downs of life. When my father, said h«, f migtated to Jef¬ ferson county, in the days of its lirst seitlement lie located wilh hi* family in oiie.of.ihe somh- r^rn towns. Among cilier improvements onhis piemises, there had been erected one of ihe first essentials to a new settlement—a saw mill. It was one of those old-fashioned concerns com¬ mon in those days, rigged with the huge under¬ shot water-wheel, long heavy pitman, and cumbrous saw franie. Those onwieldly wheels are now quite forgotten in the improvements thai have been made in these agents, but I shall never forgei lhe end attached to my father's mill. Iwas engaged in getting out lumber, when an accident happened to the water works» and I wenl alone iho next day to repair the damage. Carelessly knpeling upon one of the floating- boards of the wheel, without observing the jw- sition of the crank, I proceeded to survey tho nature of the derangement. While thus occu¬ pied, I did not ob5erve the shght motion to¬ wards n revolution which had commenced by lhe wheel, caused by my weight, and my atten¬ tion w.iB first called to the nature of my situa¬ lion by a slow heavy pressure above my knee. Ata glance I comprehended the peril that I waa in, and made an eflbrt to extricate myself, but il was ton late; 1 was fast wedged between the lloais of the wheel ami the sill of lhe flume. With considerable alarm I now observed that lhe crank of the wheel was lurned up and that my weight had slightly moved it from the per¬ pendicular. A moment's reflection increased my alarm, as I fully comprehended that the heavy pitman, and the saw frame above tliat, were pressing with their comlined weight npon the crank. To complete ilie horror of my situalion, I perceived that the crank was moving almast imperceptibly, and I knew that without instant relief I should inevitably be crushed to death between the wheel and the flume. I gazed around and called loudly for belp; but no hn man being was near; and no answer was giv en to my cries. My eyes fell again upon lhe crank; it was still moving and drawing me in¬ to that awful death- I now looked aronnd for some object to interpose between the wheel and the flume and saw an axe that I had brought with me lying at one end of the wheel but the joy that was lit up within mo by the sight of ihis objeci was dispelled in a moment, on finding that with my utmost exertions I could not reach it. In my desperation I then tried lo wrench something from the wheel, but every thing resisted my utmost strengih. My last hope was that somebody might pass upon the road which ran along the opposite bank of the stream ; this hope died wiihin mo wfaen I reflected how seldom it was that travelers came that way. ' The crank had now readied an inclination of about thirty degrees, and I knew that itt. motion would soon betxjme fearfully accelerated- My limbs had gradually benumbed, as the circnla¬ tion of thc blood was interrupted, and in a sort of listless despair I laid back upon the wheel; and then in obedience to maternal insrriirtJon I (!al)ed on Heaven for holp. While thus I layj halt" snpplioaiing and lialf complaining, my ihoughts lurned with a sort of impious alacrity, from ilie Almighty to a noise upon the bridge that rrojsed lhe !^lieam Imlr.w ihe mill, and I fairly errpamed with delight as 1 recognized the sound tu he thatof a horse's Uoad. After crossi.ig ihc bridge the horse cominenoeil a slow trot, and I knew there mn«t be u rider upon him aUhough ihe biishe.s on the roadside pre¬ vented m« from seeing Uim. Wlien live sounds came opposite t!ie mill I liallooed, as I suppos¬ ed, land enough to be heard forty timea the dis¬ tance 10' the road; but owing in exhaustion my voice oould not have reachetl far, for the horse did not sioji. Siil! the soimds moved on andas I felt back in mter despair upon the wheel seemeil lo me thai the lior.«e and its rider In tliat steady tramp—tramp—tramp, were h;ir- harously treading upon my heart. This disappointment was so great that, for a while, I settled inm a partial unconsciousness. A squeak of ihe plltnan on the cranl:, howev¬ er, recalled me again to the horrors of my sit- iiation. My limbs liad been gradually drawn down £0 that ihe wheel would soon com¬ mence crushing my body; the crank would in Vminule or two attain a horizontal position, af¬ ter which the wheel would revolve with fearful rapidity, and I was utterly wiihout hope. Then my heart went up lo heaven in an earnest, heartfelt prayer, and I reproached myself for the selflsh manner in wiiich I had looked np to the Great Throne but a moment before. Tho scenes of my past life flitted palpably before my vision, and with deep humiliation I be¬ sought forgiveness for thc error of my ways.— This communion gradually reconciled me to my fate; and, feeling no pain, in my reverie, it seemed that I was floating in a delicious atmos¬ phere up to the realms of bliss. These delightful sensations were interrupted by a aound of aomething near me, and gradu¬ ally opening my eyea, I discovered ihe figure of a man standing on a beam by the flume. He seemed to me an flugel from Heaven. Again inspired with hope, I gave a faint cry of joy.— The man turned round, and as he saw me, in un instant he bounded to the crank and endea¬ vored to raise it wiili his shoulder, but could not. He then seized a plank, and placing it under lhe crank, secured it from lowerinc any farther down. Then I heard him adjusting a lever, and in a short time the inexpressible fe¬ licity of feeling myself gradually elevated from my terrible sitnation, by Ihe slow turning back of the Avheel, caused me to faint entirely away. When I again opened my eyes, I was lying upon the green grass, and my preserver, by chafing my limbs, had partially restored lensi- bility 10 my half dead body. AViih both hands I feebly grasped one of his, not endeavoriiig to speak; and the pleasant but-anxious sroile that Ul up his countenant:e, told that he appreciated myacknowledgmenia of gratiiude. -¦' ¦ My deliverer happened to be a man with whom I was well acquainted, and ha was also the roan that passed ihe mill when I was in my perilous sitnation. He heard a faint noise as ho roile by, but being engaged in thought was not attracted by it. While going up a hill shortly afterward, the train of his reflections was broken and then it occurred to him that possibly the nol'e might have been a cry of distress. To be perfectly sure, he turned hia horse and came back, and thus was I most providentially rescued—Watertown Joumal "WuiT Has He Bcen.—Wliat is that to you ? The whale had lurned at alwut forty rods from the ship, and was making for her with double its former speed, his pathway white with foam. Wlierever one of these travel?, he earnesiiy and ofl'ectionately reealls to mind his e.xiended plaitis and hills—-his thoughis as incessantly turn towards home, as those of the Swiss. The English, it Is said, go imo banlc with a song about roast beef in their mouths.— When one of these—all who know lhem hear witness—encouniers ihe perils of battle, or is surrounded by imminent danger, nay, even ; when on board of a foundering vesael, his last I exclamation is.: Hurrah for old ¦ • • • The Poot-PrlntB of the Creator, Py HUGH MILLER, with a ME.-rtoiR of THE AiJTiioB, by Loui* AgasBia. The poor brutes, in the hard struggle for the maste¬ ry, exhaust all their energies, UU the combat proves faial to one or the other. The exasper¬ ated dog loses his hold—now, wo to him, ten chances to one, he is eviscerated In the presence of a thousand seemingly unpitying spectators. Horrid amusement, that ends in cruel death ! The speciatorii conformably to the right of purchase, in advancing the stipulated sum for admission, not wholly satisfied wilh the bloody contest, call for another fight, which is readily granted.- A similar scene is gone through to glut lhe never-satisfied ayoe of the lovers of this genleel diversion ! An unfair deal. Strong as my nerves naturally are, to witness such a sight, cauaed a shudder. I felt no small degree of mortification to have been carried with the moving crowd to the place of amuse¬ ment. Why is irty:^W6l^iit]ike:it ihl'tf ? i-Bb&um it' hns no scruples. but from Newport and its purlieus, as one le- •edes from the river, on the road leading to Falmouth, ore has a charming prospect of the city. Here the observer is forcibly and im¬ pressively strnck; and, by the aid of some fancy, the prospect seems an Eden, sysiemaii- cally alndded with houses. The scenery is imposing—noihing m the west can surpass tho extended panoramic view.* But why, B:*// and Bear Bailing were in vogue here, I find no meinorandum^ The omission, if I heard the reason, to neglect a record, grieves me now. Memory serves me nol to recall the rea¬ son if I ever heard it. Hypothesis, based upon concomitants, must, therefore, after a lapse of more than, twenty years, be substiluted. In Spain, the practice of Baiting, is of remote origin. It is an amusement which had heen practised in the olden times when a viotory had been gained over infidels, Wheiher the Bait¬ ing witnessed, took place on their account, those more conversant with these things, aa seems them good, may decide. A victory, it ia true, had been just then achieved. The po¬ lemic discussion between.Owen and Campbell, had taken place. Owen, it is acknowledged, was aorely beaten—so much ao, that maiiy "of bis followers abandoned ihe ntopian scheme of socialists. It was also when, the modest Fan¬ ny Wxightjhad closed her lectures onXtierfy, in the. Queen city. In tho old country, where cuaiotn has sanctioned this sort of sport, it is considered a tnost genteel diversion, and worthy of enjoyuient, 'on account of the variety of cas< nalities it brings, in its train.' Perhaps this view of il, commended the practice to a com¬ paratively new oonntry. To me, bowever, it aeenis to bave nothing in it to be called by the mildTiame of genteel diversion. To speak iho least unkindly^ bfit, it is a murderous practice,- with all its c^naltijes connpcted wjib it, from be^inning.toend. _ On tfaa day of this sport, hnndreds were seen in ateamboalsyigondolasj'nnd every imaginable variety of sraall-rcraft, exhibiling a Venetian scene',otoisingtheriver-^on eitherslde of ihe streaih,ci'bwds.from^every point of compaas, as .if-the world Was in ihotloh'j pressed'eagerly tpy^st^ -theiatena, wbioh was ;;a grtitesijide cit- cory^tuis.^ty'^uinatrnctedj'app^ an :dc- teg«^; nMunii^^^ Dn Mt M* Moore & Son, Dentists, ¦DESPECTFULLY announce to their frienda *^* and the"public generally, that thcy^Mmw^^ Btm continue to pmctfce DENTlfiTBY,^^^^^ In ilU lte varlouA branches. ~ .
