It ia needless for ua to Fpeak of a thousand blessed substitutions o( machine for manual labor, such as ilic grist mill forthe quern; the threshing mill for the flail; the spin ¦ oroua as it was a few generations since. We know a aimilar change has taken place, lo some ; extent, with those engaged inoiher pursuits, but ¦ wo iliink thc change is not elsewhere so marked ning wheel for ihc spinning frame; the hand | or so inexcusable as here; and why is tbis?— loom for the power ioom, &,c., our objeci princi- ' Farmers lake more of tlie healthful exercise, pally, in the few words we have to say, is lo j ihcy breathe a purer atmosphere, they usually direct ihc attemion of mechanics and inventors j hai-c Jess mental anxiety, and no temptation to HOW IT'S DONE AT THE ASTOB. ALIQUORARY SKETCH. to tlic duty of observing and marking such and such severe and loildome occupations for which macliinc-labor miglit he substituted. A compa¬ ny hasjust been formed in New York for the purpose of sawing fire-wood by machinery into proper Jengiha for stoves, and selling it in lhat stale to purchasers. Now, ahhough wood has been sawn by machinery into proper lengilisior stoves in many places, siill, until now, no such wood could be purchased in that city ; tlie wood used was all sawn by men employed for lhat purpose with hand saws. It miy be aaid " the men who made it their business lo saw loads o 'Ood from door lo door, were not very highiyi paid for their severe toil, and thej will ilius bo ihrown out of c.irning iheir daily bread, therefore such machine labor should bo discountenanced.' Were the premises correct, the concfustoua would me t with our assent, but machine-labor, in the oggrcgatc, has not yet created a surplus fund of idlers ; men, when thrown out of one oc¬ cupation, soon full into others, and in the major¬ ity of past instances* tbe changes have been iieficial. The question miglit be asked, why was there not such a sensible wooden company organized in this citj be(orei' wa realty wonder why so many ofour men of capilal were so long wooden-headed on the subject. In cities, wliere they are so many new brick buildings in the course of erection all thc time, it is certainly a subject of wonder to see all the moriar and brick carried up high ladders by men, having liitle angular wooden bo.\cs called "hods" on their shoulders. The labor is most oppressive and severe ; in our opinion, it could well be superseded by machinery, so as lo save running up and down the ladd-jrs, at least; this surely could be done by block and tackle. We might present some other objects for the con¬ sideration of our readers, but as we have so many sermons to deliver in one year, we havo said enough upon this text at present.—-Scietit'Jtc Atnericati. keep late hours—and what can so greatly coun¬ teract these natural advantages? The lawa o heallh must be grossly violated somewhere. Wc believe too lillle attention is given not on¬ ly to bathing and the ventilation of sleeping apartments, but to what Is perhaps of still great¬ er consequence, the food of farmers' families.— With greater Jacilittes tlian any other class of persons, for procuring a variety of wholesome food, their diet is yet composed, principally, of he most uuwholcsome articles, such as fat pork, and hot bread, and strong coffee. We endeavo¬ red to show in our »'olume of last year, (page 94) xchy fat and fat meala were injurious in the warm season. We know that farmers feci the neodof anima food, and fresh meats cannoi always be had, yet leaner kinds of meat and more vegetables might be used wilh profit, if the farmers would culti¬ vate a taste for these, and take the pains to fur¬ nish a supply. We believe nearly all working rncn would like vegetables, if they were proper¬ ly prepared, and how easy it is to cook a few tem()ting dishes o." them, lo tnkeihc plac^ of fat meat and greasy paairy. There isa great re¬ form needed here, and oh! wivea and mothers, as you value the health ol your families, do not neglect this. A small party of couniry merchants, traders, &c., were cruising around New York ono even¬ ing, seeing the lions, and their cicerone—by the way, "a native," who knew what was what— took them up Broadway, andas they passed the Asi or Iiouse, snys one of the strangers : "Sniith, what's this tliunderin' big house?" " Oh, ah yes, ihis," says the cicerone, Smith, " this, boys, is a great tavern—fine place to get ai drink." " Well, be hooky, let's all go in." Ill ilicy all went; taking a private room, or a small side parlor, the country gents requested Smith to do the talking, and order in the liquor. Smith called fora bill of fare, upon which are ^'invoiced" more "sorts," and harder named wines and liquors, thim could be committed to memory in a week. "Thai's it," says Smith, marking a bill of fare and handing it to a servant, " that's it—two bot¬ tles, bring 'cm up." Up came the wine; it was, ofcourse, elegant, and the couniry gents froze to it—ihey had never seen such stuff before, in all their born days! " Look-a-here, mister," says one of the busi' ness men, " got eny more uv that wine?" " Oh, yes, sir!" says the servant. " WeU, fetch it in." " Two bottles.sir?" " Two ganders ! No, bring in six botlles 1 I can £0 two on *em myself," says the country gent. The servant delivered his message at the bar, and after a few grimaces and whispering, the servant and one of the bar-keepers, or clerks, carried up tho wine. Says the clerk, whisper¬ ing to Smuh, whom he slightly knew : " Smith, do you know the price of this wine?" '* Certainly I do," says Smiih ; here it is in¬ voiced on the catalogue, ain't il ?" "Oh, very well," saya ihc clerk, about to withdraw. " Hold on!" snys onc ofthe merry couniry gents, "don't snake your handsome counten¬ ance ofT so quick; do >er want us to (ork rite up for these drinks ?" hauling out his wallet. *' No yer don't," says anoiher, hauling out his change, *'My treat, if you please, hoys," says the third, pulling out a handfulof small change. " I asked the party m, and I pay for what liquor we drink—bo thunder!" In the midst of iheir enthusiasm, the clerk observed it was of no importance just then— the bill would be presented when they got through. This was saiisfactory, and tho party went on fanishing their wine, smoking, &:.c. "'Spose we have some rale sham paigne, boys," says one of the gems, beginning lo feel b's oata some. " Agreed," says the rest. Two bottles of the best *^ shajti" in " the tavern " were called lor, and which the party drank with great gusto. "Now," says one of them, "let's go to lhe theatre, or some place where there's a show go- in' on. Here you mister—to lhe servani—go felch in the landlord. '• The landlord, sur?" says Pat, the servant, in some doubt as to the meaning of thc phrase. "Ay, landlord—or tbat chap that was in here just now, tell him to fetch inthe bill. Ah, here you are old feller; well what's the damages t" asks the gent, so ambitious to put the party through, and hauling ou: a haudful of keys, sil¬ ver and coppers to do it with. " Eight bottles of thai old flim-flam-di-rip- rop," pronouncing one of those fancy gamboge tiiles, found upon an Astor House catalogue. *' ninety six dollars " '* What!" gUdped the counlry chap, gather¬ ing up his small change, thai ho had began to son out on the table. " And two bottles of 'Schrider,' and cigars- seven doUarB," coolly continued the bar clerk ; " one hundred and ihre'e dollars." *' A hundred and three thunder attd—" "A Hu.vDr.ED A.vn lunzz dollars!" cried the country.gems. in one breath, all starting to their feet and putting on their hats The clerk explained it, clear as mud; the trio ' spudged up" tbe amount, l„okcd very sober and walked out. * "Come, boys," said Smith, "let theatre.' *' Guess not," say the boys; "b'lievc we'll go home for to-night, Mr. Smith." And they made for their loggings. If liicse country gents were asked when ihey got home, any particulars about "the elephant," they'd probably hint aomething about gett ing a glimpse of him at the Astor House. tlseftil Information to All. Strip thc body and rub it dry; then wrap it in hot blankets, and place it in a waim bed in n chamber. 3. Wipe and cleanse the mouth and nostrils. 4. In order to restore the naiural warmih ofthe body. In order to resiore breathing, iniroduce the pipe of a common bellows into one nostril, care¬ fully closing the oiher ond the moulh; ot ihe eame time drawing downwards and pushing gently backwards, the upper pan ot the wind¬ pipe, to allow a more free admission of air; blow thc bellows gently, iii order to inflate the lungs, till the breast be a little raised; the mouth nnd nostrils should then sel free, and a moderate pressure made with the hand upon the chest. Nevertheless, he made his calls steadily wiih coch regular post, and in re¬ ply tothe information that it was useless to coll, known his purpose to do so just as often as he pleased. One bitter cold day the bell rang, and lhe good Indy hastened to get her hands from thc dough in wliich they were busy, to answer lhe' call— when she reached the door there stood the ever¬ lasting pedlar. Am fail/. Developme.vt of Insect Life.—The National Intelligencer oi yesterday contains a le^tter from F. B. Ofiden, Esq., American consul at Liver¬ pool, to a friend in Washingion, in which he gives lhe result of some galvanic experimentB, made by Mr, Andrew Crosse, ofSomersetsliire, by which insect life was'developed by the solu¬ tion of black flints and catstic soda. The letter contains a diagram of tlieapparaius used, and of the insecls produced—but we must conteni our¬ selves with a detail oi the process, which is aa follows: " A tabulated retort, with its long end plunged in a glass dish of mercury, has a plaiina wire passing ihrough it, connecied with a negative poleol a weak galvanic battery. Through a neck in lhe retort hermetically sealed, another platjna wire, immersed in tbe caustic solution, comraunicatea with the positive pole. The bulb of I he retort is two-thirds filled with a most care¬ fully prepared caustic aolution ol silcT and pot¬ ash. Pure black flints and eausiic eoda, aficr being subjecied to a white heat, are pulverized and molted inlo a glass, which is soluble m dis¬ tilled water. In this solution no animal life can possibly exist, nor can there in the inert ury.— Tho whole waa then placed upon a shell (or Lonsiant inspeciion. A gelatinous substance was first observed to have formed aruund tlie bouom of the positive wire. Then No. 1 made lis appearance, gradually expanding inlo Nos. 2 t? The New York and Erie Railway brought down in ono day not long since, ISO.OOO lbs. of bntter. Tho amount of produce bi-oughi to tide waler by this road, is almost incredible, and would be still larger if thc capacity of the road was greater. 'A Broome county fa-mcr told us in December that he had been more than two weeks trying 10 send forward some produce which he was unable to do, because the cars were so full before ihey reached Binghamton, there was no room for anymore. Since the opening oflhe road, the consumer? of farm produce in all the villages, arc grumbling at high prices. What is tiieir loss is the farmer's gain. Every farmer along a Une of railway ought to be a stockhold¬ er. They would then look upon it as our road, and try to promote iis inieresia, and thereby their own. It issupposed tbat the quantity of milk now consumed in Eosion ia more than five timea aa great as it was before the various railways were opened, and the price from one to three cents less per quart. On the Fitchburg railway alone, about two ihousand gallons are brought in aod distributed daily. The milkirain from Wesibo- rough was detained by accident a few mornings smce, and some 20,000 persona, in consequence, saya tho Traveller, had to go without cream or milk for breakfast. Chickens are now sent from Northern Ohio alive, to the New York market, where they sell from Ihirty to fifty cents a piece. We have known them a drujj in the Ohio market at fifty cents per dozen. This is only the beginning of lhe advantages to the country, growing out of lhe Erie Railway.—iVow. LiDERiA.—The interest which haa of late been awakrned among the free colored population of thc coumry, respecting the young and prosper¬ ous republic whieh llieir emigrant kindred bave founded in Africa, cannot bat bo gratifying to those who have watched tho long and arduous struggles ot the colonization cause. In former years ihcre seemed to be an apathy on the sub¬ ject pervading the Siatea, and noiwithalanding lho meal aircnuous enbrts of the Colonization Society, very hltle progress was made; butthe events oi a few yeara past have tended to kindle an inlerest which has become diffused through all parta of the country. A number of Scato goveroments have made appropriations bf money Io aid tho emigration, individual coniributjona have increased, and the free colored people them¬ selves have held numeroua meetings to procure information respecting the new repub He, and deliberate whether they had not better make preparations for immediate emigration thither.— AU lhe accounts wc receive (rom Liberia, agree in representing its career as one ot uninterrupt¬ ed prosperity. AI! ilic letters written by emi¬ grants who have had time to experience the ben¬ efits of the country, c.tpress full aatisfaction with the prospect betore them. The goyernment is conducted with prudence, economy, and sagaci¬ ty; agriculture is thriving wonderfully, and oth¬ er indusirial pursuits are gradually receiving more and more attemion. Native iribea are glad to seek the protection oi the republic ; and thus civilization and Christianity are finding their way among the rude savages. Theae are achieve¬ ments of no common order.—PAi7.
