Thore i-s a particu¬ lar reaaon forearly sowing rye this season, and that i» the advanlago it wili afford for feed lo nUeep and young stock. The dry weather has lessened tha hay-crop to a great eitent, and Ihe supply of grass in paaturaarauet in many cases bo very "small. Hye if iiliowed to get good root may be pastured wiih light stock in the fall, and to aorns e.xtent duiing the winier. In some caees it mav bo aven expedient to feed in iUb spring.' Tho diminution which results tu thu yield of grain is nut equivalent to the advantages nn pasture. The crop starti very early, and is particularly adapt¬ ed to tha dry lands on which the graas has suffered most. Would it nol be judiciuus to sow this crop largely, to ba used this fall and noxt apring as a subslitute fur hay and grass 1 In passing through the c»untry, we nolico in the barn-yards and around the barn, or sometimas by the roaa S'de, considerable piles of manures, e.xposed to was'le by «vaporation and washing uf rains. The cleanest and heaviest should be sown. If it cuntains sseds of perni¬ cious plants they should be taken out. It will amply pav to pick over by hand a pack or half bushel of good clean ground, pur¬ posely for seed. Chess, oats and other seeds, lijrl'.ler than wheat kernels, may be principally taken out by putting thc grain in strong brine, a small quantity at a time and stirring it wilU a stick. The foul seed nill rise and may be skimmed uff. When it lias baen finished, it may ba put oa a floor and dried off, or rendered fit for sowing bv mi.xing with it air, slacked lima, or piaster. Pa.ssing the grain slowly through a good vviimowing mill, will clean il from nearly all tlie small seeds, such as wild pinic, wild mu.slarJ.and seeds of tho most shriveled and imperfect kernels. One day last May, towards evening, I louud myself on board the fine steamer Conestoga, whereof was Master for the voyage my friend P. II. P., who as a river .man has not a superior on the Western Walers. We were soon out of sight of St. Loui.>i, and thc noble steamer ploughing the water in beautiful style, soon brought us to the moulh of till) Missouri. The scenery hsreis luvely, thu river i< tilled wim intiuitf.;rablo i.'slands, behind which the sun wasjust set¬ ting in all its splendor, rivalling in beauty anything I had ever .seen. The Missouri was luw, the Spring rise not having made its appearance yet; when the river is high the current is very rapid, and it sirikes the opposite bank with groat force, which has already washed aw,-iy sume thirty feet, and fifty feet more will bring it into the famous Arnerican bottom, where it is supposed tho bed of the river was at ons timo. It is Ihought by some, that before lung, if something is not done lu prevent it, ii will force its way Ihrough and cover all thai most beautiful and productive portion of lllinios, leaving St. Louis high and dry. The lirsl lown we came to was Alton. Iwenty-lwo miles from St. Luuis, and fiv-i ab jve the niouth df llie Ml-ssouri; il was once the rival of St. Louis, and did a con¬ siderable business. It has been on a ("land for somo years, bul has now taken a frosh start, and contains about two tlioujand in¬ habitants. The Illinois State Peniteniiary is silualed here, it is built on an elevated pari of the river bank, and looks like a ca.--tle, at a dislancc. In the morning at the break of day, wo found ourselves at Hannibal, in Mistuuri. This place does a large business in thosliip- ping fine, in the articIcK uf Tobacco, Hemp. Wheat, and Corn, it contains ahout twtmty- seveii hundred inhabitants. The couniry back of Hannibal is fine and settled prin¬ cipally by Pennsylvanians, who devote their aUenlion entirely lo the culture uf wheat and corn. A colony is now furming by emigrants from Beaver county con- sis;ingof aboul two hundred families", who have purchased a large tract of the best land in lhe State.
