Washington, March 0. — The coal litrlke commission is hurrying with its report, and the document will probably be in the hands of the president within a week. The president's instructions to the commission required it to go into the question of the "causes out of which the controversy arose." The causes ascribed by the commission will hot be entirely comforting to the operators. Buffalo, March G.—One week ago Edwin L. Burdick, the wealthy member of aristocratic social organizations in Buffalo's exclusive Elmwood district, was murdered hi a peculiarly mysterious manner and the authorities have as yet been unable to take their investigations beyond the realm of suspicion. BRENNAN i ROBERTS, Tlie first trial spin of the challenger is set for March 27. There will be preliminary triajs 011 the Clyde and theu In the Solent. Later she will race at Belfast and possibly at Kingstown. Ireland, where special matches will be arranged. Th,e commission lias practically agreed on ull tlio vital points on which It was required to pass. New York, March 0.—One hundred and fifty girls and men employed In the Morris Jacoby factory building, on East Thirty-eighth street, were thrown into a panic by a blaze on the second floor, occupied by the Standard Metal Co., and rushed pell mell into the street. The fire was caused by a vat of varnish boiling over. Increaaed Pay. The contention made by the operators that they are unable to pay higher rates for mining because several of the railroads monopolizing the coallield bad been unable to pay dividends to their stockholders, it is understood, will be answered by the statement that the railroads have failed to pay dividends because of their very large overcapltalizution and interest charges. Bristol, It. I., March 0.—Work on the new syndicate ninety foot yacht at the llerrosbofts' is being rushed to the extreme limit, ami the launching, it is now believed, is scheduled for April 11. RuhIi Work on Cap Defender. Dealers in High Grade CARPETS, RUGS, It is believed that the increase of 10 per cent will be granted without any question, but that certain changes will be made in the system of paying the miners which will make that increase considerably larger, because it will do away with the abuse of which the union complained of making the men mine more than a ton of coal wheu in theory they were paid for a ton. District Attorney Coats worth said: "I expect the report of City Chemist Ilili soon. He has been at work on the examination of the contents of the stomach of Ilurdlck, and as I view the matter now I will have 110 hesitancy in making public the results of his Huttings."Watertown, N. Y., March C.—The Otis House and half a dozen stores in the same block were burned this morning, causing a loss of $200,000. Fire broke out in the cellar shortly after 8 o'clock and spread rapidly through the elevator shaft. The guests in the hotel escaped with difficulty. The Fairbanks block, adjoining the hotel, was seriously damaged. PEOPLE S STORE ART SQUARES, Oil Cloths and Linoleums, Wall Paper, Paints and Oils. Artlelen For Champlonahlp Battle Signed In Baltimore. Have a Look! The opinion is also held by the commission that the public would be very glad to pay a small Increased price for its coal if by that means the miners Could have satisfactory wages and a recurrence of last year's strike could be prevented. Baltimore. Mareli U.—James J. Oorbett and Billy Delaney, the latter representing James J. Jeffries, have met here and signed articles for a fight foi the heavyweight championship of the world. It was agreed that the contest take place In California In July or August, 11)03, under the auspices of the athletic club offering the largest purse. The men are to spar twenty rounds to a decision, the winner to receive 75 per ceut of the purse and the loser to take 25 per cent. Saturday The miners struck for a S!0 per cent decrease in hours for the men paid by the day, without any decrease in the men's wages. It is understood that the decrease in hours recommended will be from ten to nine. "A hard question to answer," ho said. "This is rather a blind case. The police are working hard 011 every clew, and while we may suspect certuin things It Is a different matter to ground our suspicion 011 a legal foundation. When we make an arrest in this case we will be prepared with the evidence to carry a conviction. Until we are so prepared we'll work and try to unravel some matters." THE CRUM NOMINATION, AT OUR PRICES. Senator Tillman Declares That It Will Never Come to a Vote. To InNiire Work. Washington, March 6.—In again sending to the Senate the nomination of the negro, W. D. Cmm, to be collector of the port of Charleston, the President has thrown down a challenge which the Democrats are not slow in picking up. Senator Tillman announces positively that the Crum nomination will never come to a vote in the Senate. "I myself," said he, "will take the contract, if necessary, to talk It to death whenever it is presented, and I shall not lack plenty of assistance.!' The only matter about which the ..commission lias lately been in doubt is the question as to how the miners should be paid. In some of the mines they ure now paid by the car. The car was supposed to hold a ton. One of the chief aims of the commission has been to devise a system of settlement which would keep the miners at work and give them employment for a larger portion of the year. It had to be assumed lit the outset that only a verdict which was. satisfactory to the men could be counted on to keep Hietn at work. The miners' union is liot Incorporated. It has 110 legal responsibility, and |f the real grievances were not adjusted or their recurrence rendered impossible the country would have no security that the men might not at any time throw down their tools und quit the mines. Schenectady, N. Y., March 0.—The beginning of the threatened building trades tieup has taken place. A large force of lathers has struck. It Is expected that all other lathers in the city will go out today. The cause of the strike was ttftD refusal of the employers to consent to a new scale of wages giving the men 55 cents an hour instead of 40 cents. The carpenters' union lias demanded a raise from 35 cents to 40 cents an hour, to take effect on April 1, and this demand has also been refused. The carpenters' union announces that it will stand by the lathers, and the masons, plasterers and all others employed In the building trades are prepared to take similar action. The strike will involve 3,000 men. Strictly Fancy Butter 27c In other eolleries the men are paid so much .per yard of coal, and in Pennsylvania and Reading mines they are paid by weight after the coal is taken from the mine. This last mentioned system Is necessary from the fact that the coal In these eolleries is in vertical veins and there is no way in which the miner can avoid loading the slate with the coal. Mm. All the members of the commission were present. Judge Gray, the chairman, presiding. The question of recognition of the union will not enter directly Into the report. THE CRUM NOMINATION, AT OUR PRICES.
