I have not used this means to prevent n vote on the Panama canal treaty before the final adjournment of congress. 1 shall not engage in any such undertaking against the treaty lu the special session which begins today. My only object In this long contest is to have the convention perfected, as it should be, to protect American rights for all time." Much Disputed Proposition. Developments in the Case. Stoevc's friends claim that the lamplighter was in the habit of frightening little girls along Howard avenue by thrusting his blazing torch at them, and several had narrowly escaped, one being Steeve's sister. Her brother had warned Larichia several times to stop scaring the girls, but he persisted. This evening the boys had a quurrel, and the Italian drew a lmgo revolver and snapped it at Steeve twice without exploding the cartridges. A moment later he made a third attempt, with probably fatal results. The truth Is that the pope neve* succeeded iu getting rid of the cold, which caused a slight cough and hoarseness. Dr. Lapponl found he was somewhat better, but frankly told him he must consent to cure his cold or run the risk of something serious. BLEACHED TABLE LINEN Washington, March 5.—The anthracite arbitration commission is conferring today with the attorneys for both sides to the anthracite strike controversy. The meeting is being held behind closed doors and no word of the proceedings Is permitted to reach the outside world from the council chamber, in the Inlersta'te Commerce Commission's headquarters. It is known, however, that ten attorneys are arguing before the commission the muchmooted question of weighing coal. Buffalo, March 5—"I am satisfied in my mind that I know the person who murdered Uurdick. I also believe that we have not at present enough evidence to convict the guilty party. The special session met at noon to act upon the Panama canal and Cuban reciprocity treaties. The first business was the swearing in of new members, and then both treaties were referred to the committee on foreign relations, of which Senator Cuiiom is chairman. Cardinal Satolli, prefect of the Congregation of Studies, which has jurisdiction over tile Catholic university at Washington, has received in farewell audience the ltev. Dennis II. The first business was the swearing in of new members, and then both treaties were referred to the committee on foreign relations, of which Senator Cuiiom is chairman.
