Prices—Says He Will Sue Exchange Charleston, W. Va., Feb. 2?.—Deputy United States Marshal Cunningham and a -posse was fired on by rioting miners at the Lannock mines, Raleigh county, early this morning. They returned tlie fire and a battle ensued, In which. It Is said, one of the posse and ten rioters were killed. The marshal was trying to arrest miners for contempt of Judge Keller's blanket injunction. While the flre was at Its height a cornice fell, carrying to the ground with It twelve firemen who were nt work on the roof. The men were considerably bruised, but no liones were broken, and they continued with their work. Washington, Feb. 25.—After nil tha talk of compromise on statehood legislation the only visible effect is that tbe breaking of the deadlock ou the omnibus bill lias cleared the way for the consideration aud disposition of other necessary'legislation, including the appropriation bills. It is now apparent that all pending measures, with the possible exception of tbe I'auama canal treaty and the Gubuii reciprocity treaty, will be disposed of before adjournment on March 4. New York, Feb. 25.—Camllle Weidenfeld, who was prominent in the litigation brought by Peter Power, the "vanishing plaintiff," against the Northern Securities railroad combination, has been suspended from the Stock Exchange for one year. It was necessary to remove the elephantB through a door facing tbe burning building and across tbe tracks between rows of burning and smoking cars. In order to accomplish this safely the four keepers took one animal out at a time until the entire herd wag removed. The loud trumpeting of the elephants while they were being driven to a place of safety gave rise to a rumor that the animals had broken loose. This rumor rapidly spread around the city and occasioned, much excitement and alarm. The other animals, however, were at no time In dunger. The proceedings leading to the suspension were dramatic, and immediately after the governing committee of the exchange rendered its decision counsel for Mr. Weidenfeld served a complaint in a suit begun in Nassau county asking for $500,000 damages and costs against William McClure, who is secretary of the exchange and who was the complainant against Mr. Weidenfeld In the Stock Exchange charges. 42 North Mafu Street, £U~Next to Eagle Hotel. With a legislative week yet remaining it may develop indeed that these two treaties will reach a vote and thus he disposed of one way or the other. The president evidently inclines to that iH'llef, for it was said at the. White House that he thought the situation was clearing and that he was preparing to leave Washington for his first western trip on March 20. If it should he found necessary to call an extra session of the senate for the ratification of the pending treaties, the president and Ills advisers believe that it should lDe called immediately after the regular session adjourns and that it would not he of long duration. Dealers in High Grade CAEPETS, RUGS, PEOPLE'S STORE Washington. Feb. 25.—Practically freed for the first time this session of the Statehood incubus, the Senate today inaugurated longer hours with a view of clearing up all Important business so as to avoid an extra session. Only 12 Senators were in their seats at the opening at 11 o'clock. Senator Quay, as usual, Immediately requested that a vote on the Statehood bill be taken at 2 o'clock today without further debate, but Mr. McKean objected. ART SQUARES, Oil Cloths and Linoleums, Wall Paper, Paints and Oils. Painters and Paptrhannrs. 15 South Main St., Pittston. ALWAYS THE CHEAPEST. After the shooting the young man went to the home of a neighbor and said that robbers had entered his home and killed his father, mother and sister and that he escaped after a running battle with the desperadoes. He apparently was greatly excited and said he was organizing a posse to pursue his father's slayers. He stopped at another house and told the same story. The fire was under control In about half an hour. Six new Pullman cars, valued at $13,000 each, and two new fiat cars, valued at $4,000, were entirely destroyed. More than 150 feet of the barns was btarned to the ground, and ten stock cars which were standlug outside the bnrns were damaged. Have a Look! The basis of the charge, as explained In the'complaint against William Slc- Clure, Is that Mr. Weidenfeld encouraged Peter Power to bring action against the Northern Pacific, "not for legitimate and honest protection • • • but for ulterior and illegitimate purposes or for the wrongful extortion of money or other values as a condition of peace." The charge also was, the complaint alleges, that the Power action was brought for the purpose of depressing market prices. Best Round Steak ioc Pound Statehood Bill Likely to Pall. AT OUR PRICES. In the Senate today, the Statehood rider on the agricultural appropriation bill was withdrawn and the bill, thus relieved of its burden, was passed. Statehood legislation is no nearer enactment than it.wuA a month or two months ago, for the Democrats refuse to accept the Republican two state compromise, while, on the other hand, the Itcpublican senators who have favored statehood will refuse to go to the limit of voting with the Democrats to attach the statehood bill as a rider to any of the regular appropriation bills. Seuator Quay and his merry 'men, therefore, according to present indications, will have to continue their sparring for a vote on the omuibus bill, with the probability of obtaining it becoming less and less as the time for final adjournment draws near. The Kwangsi rebels have defeated the battalions sent to the Hunan frontier and crossed into that province. Here they were joined in pillaging the frontier towns by numbers of Kolao Huls. The British, American and French ministers at Peking have lodged a protest with the Chinese government against the transfer of Yu Lien San to the governorship of Shansl. Yu is notorious tdr his antiforeign prejudices, and the ministers have protested against his transfer to a province where ao many missionaries are stationed. Much Damage Done to Property—A Steamer Driven Ashore, Tlie Peter Power Case. London, Feb. 25.—The British steamer Monadnock, bound from Blyth to Boston, with a cargo of coal, was driven ashore on the Isle of Man by a gaile. The crew was rescued with much difficulty by life savers. It is believed the vessel is a total loss. In London, a gale levelled trees and walls of buildings in course of construction. Many houses were unroofed. The wind attained a velocity of 60 or 70 miles an hour during the night. Peter Power became famous as a "dummy" long before It was judicially decided whose man of straw the youth was. Judge Ainidun of the United States circuit court in St. Paul last October rebuked Weidenfeld as the man who had set up the dummy and pulled the strings to keep him In action. 10 lbs Oatmeal, 25 Cents 25 25 25 25 Waterbary 1D DukMn, Waterbury. Conn., Feb. 25.—Waterbury was almost in total darkness last night as far as electric arc lamps were concerned, as the result of the trimmers in the employ of the Connecticut Railway and Lighting company being on strike. The pickcts on duty from the Central Labor union succeeded In prevailing upon the men who came here on Monday to take the strikers', places to quit work, and they left town on the 6 o'clock train last night. A short time before their departure several others entered the city, and the company promises to have the lights burning tonight. Peter Power sued to enjoin the Northern Pacific Railway company from transferring its stock to the Northern Securities company. The case came before the St. Paul judge on the application of Weidenfeld to Intervene as plaintiff, he alleging that he and not Peter Power was the owner of the stock on which the suit was based. Judge Amidon granted the application for intervention after the long series of hearings in the Federal building here before Examiner Mabey. At the same time the judge dismissed the suit and said of Mr. Weideufeld: 0rlti«h Steamer Lost in Collicion. Antl-Amerlcan Zollvereln. The Woolwich sank, but her crew escaped. The New York was badly damaged.Vienna, Feb. 23.—The Neue Freie Presse publishes on account of a conversation with Baron von Call, the Austrian minister of trade and commerce, on the prospectof the formation of a central European customs alliance against American competition. Buron von Call, according to the Neue Freie Presse, considers that the chief obstacle to such a project lies in the most favored nation cluuses of the existing treaties of commerce. He, however, shares the Russian view that the Brussels sugar convention made a wide breach in the favored nation principle. The action taken by the senate when by what virtually was unanimous consent the statehood bill was detached from its position us a rider to the agricultural appropriation bill cleared the way for the other appropriation bills to which the statehood proposition had been Relieved of this embarrassment, the appropriation bills will be disposed of now promptly, and there is really little else- pending which it is designed to enact in this session. "In bringing this suit and in its prosecution in the name of Petep Power he lias practiced a gross Imposition upon the court. When his adversary has uncovered this fraud and disclosed that fact it does not stand in good faith or appeal to equitable considerations for Sir. Weideufeld to step forward and say: This fraud is uncovered, and now I will take up the burden of this litigation myself, which thus far I have conducted under the cover of this imposition."Crusade Against Turkey.
