Percy Smith, recently of Memphis, secretary, and Charles II. Brooks, supposedly the manager of the National Securities company, were arrested and later were released on bond. At the International Investment company a Mr. Anderson was found in charge. He was subpoenaed as a witness before the grand jury, but during the confusion In securing the books and papers of the concern Anderson escaped the officers and has not been found. Leishman, has forwarded to the Sultan a letter which he received from President Roosevelt, claiming for American schools in Turkey the same privilege as the French and other nations enjoy. TheBe privileges consist mainly of exemption from taxation and immunity from Turkish interference with the course of study. It Is stated that the Sultan submitted Roosevelt's letter to his council of ministers, with the recommendation that they pass over the demand of the United States because the American schools are too numerous at critical places in Armenia and there Is danger of them becoming sources of anti-Turkish agitation. Creditors. Norfolk, Vn., Feb. 18.—The Famlico Bound pteamer Olive and eighteen persons have been lost in a fierce gale. The Olive was a small passenger steamer which the Albemarle Steam Navigation company ran between Franklin, Vo., and Kdenton, N. C. Sho carried a crew of sixteen and hud ten passengers. All of the passengers were drowned and eight of the crew. Xew York, Feb. 18—According to the Herald's Berlin correspondent Germany has no Intention of withdrawing jr reducing her fleet in South American waters with the abandonment of the Venezuelan blockade and the peaceful settlement of the German L-luims against that republic. On the contrary, representations will now be made to enforce payment of debts from Brazil and Colombia. Barely has the cloud of the Venezuela affair 'passed sway when another rises in the form jf German demands upon Colombia which may bring about special complications owing to the negotiations for the construction of the Panama canal by the United States. Edlnburg, Feb. 18.—Judge Kyllachy today awarded Spain £67,600 damages against the Clyde Shipbuilding Co., for delay in delivering four torpedo boats before the outbreak of the Span- Ish-American war. Creditors. Norfolk, Vn., Feb. 18.—The Famlico Bound pteamer Olive and eighteen persons have been lost in a fierce gale. The Olive was a small passenger steamer which the Albemarle Steam Navigation company ran between Franklin, Vo., and Kdenton, N. C. Sho carried a crew of sixteen and hud ten passengers. All of the passengers were drowned and eight of the crew. Xew York, Feb. 18—According to the Herald's Berlin correspondent Germany has no Intention of withdrawing jr reducing her fleet in South American waters with the abandonment of the Venezuelan blockade and the peaceful settlement of the German L-luims against that republic. On the contrary, representations will now be made to enforce payment of debts from Brazil and Colombia.
