The .announcement was made in a signed statement, in which Mr. Woleott charges certain Republican leaders associated with the antl-Woleott forces in the Republican ranks with treachery, deliberate and continuous, although lie disposes of others of the anti-Wolcott crowd by characterizing them as "dupes" of the main conspirators. He refers to the refusal of the anti-Wolcott members of the house to unseat the Democratic members for Arapahoe county and calls it "a crime against the Republican party and against Justice." He adheres to the belief expressed by him in the statement he gave out Saturday night that the case would be settled soon and satisfactorily. His latest proposition, the Important feature of which is a matter of guaranty as a preliminary to the raising of the blockade, will be In the hnnds of all the allies by this afternoon, and Mr. Bowen thinks that an answer might be received In Washington within a very few days or possibly tomorrow. A dispatch from Rome says that the Patria asserts that the Venezuelan blockade will be raised today. An Early Agreement Predicted. Indianapolis, Ind., Jan. 20.—Indiana coal operators, who have been watchlug the proceedings of the national convention of the United Mine Workers of America, are much concerned over what they call the exorbitant demands of the scale committee. Some of them say that It is probable that an agreement will not be reached if the miners hold out for the scale which the convention approved. H.G.SHUPP ■ 4c ..So 7c 29c • To Washington. Jan. 26.—Great Britain l ai gjven her assent to the proposition to raise the Venezuelan blockade and has promised to use her influence vith the other allies to that end. This information was conveyed to Minister Bc.wen this morning by Ambassador Herbert. Italy is ready to co-operate with Great Britain, and as soon as Geimany gives her consent the blockade will cease. JEWELER, Mr. Woleott declares that Lieutenant Governor Haggott when lie withdrew from the senate chamber and with less than a dozen senators whose seats were undisputed organized another senate was assured of support by his associates in the state government, which support "fell away from him," however.36 W. MARKET STREET. 13c 7c 45c ,4c • 5c It Is assorted by the operators that they are now paying 4f) cents per ton for the run of mine coal and that the scale committee asks for an increase of 12'/j cents per ton, which is a little In excess of 25 per cent. In addition to this they state that the miners are holding $1,027,000 In the treasury as a club over their heads and that the proposition to increase tills fund to $3,000,000 is virtually a threat to the operators that If they do not accept the now scale as It conies from the convention they must expect a strike when the present contracts expire on April 1. GOOD RESOLUTIONS Cnatro'n Troop* Defeated. Arc the Order of the Day SENSATION IN LESSLER CASE. Continuing, Mr. Woloott snys Mr. Bowen declined to discuss the nnnouncement mndc by n Brussels newspaper to the effect that a commission appointed by the United States will be charged with the administration of maritime customs offices in Venezuela. The inference drawn from his remarks was that while the statement as a whole was incorrect, yet there was an element of probability to some features of it. Wlllemstacl, Curacao, Jan. 20.—President Castro's troops have been defeated by the Venezuelan revolutionists in an important battle about forty miles west of Tuerto Cabello. Scattered bodies of the defeated soldiers are arriving in Puerto Cabello. Their commanding general was captured by the revolutionists.Doblin Goes Back on the Story Which "Wicked and unforgivable as Is the wrong done the Republican party, yet from the point of view of the highest citizenship there is but one tiling to be done, and that is for the people to accept the deplorable situation and for the governor of the state to issue n certificate of election to Mr. Teller." OUR RESOLUTIONS ARE He First Told. To give the best quality at the lowest price. PEOPLE'S STORE Washington, Jan. 26.—At the Lessler bribery investigation this morning, Gustavus R. Rodgers, the New York attorney, was allowed to make a statement which caused a sensation. "I have been requested to appear for Doblin," he said. "Doblin told me that some of his testimony before the committee was true and some was not true. I advised Doblin to come before the committee to be examined." Doblin too)c the stand and was sworn again. He testified: "The statements I made regarding Quigg and Lessler are not true." When I saw Lessler here, after the stories appeared in the papers, he said: "You've got to stand for that story." "I can't do it," I said. "Then I'm politically dead." "And you'll carry me with you," I replied. He said he had seen the speaker and that it would be all right. He told me to go before the sub-committee and substantiate his story." 15 South Main St., Pittston. ALWAYS THE CHEAPEST. He pays the following tribute to the senator elect: THE DAWSON CITY SAFE. Ileadineaa to Settle Question. KonelieM I'ort I'nnnJitiend from name Have a Look! Minister Bowen and also the state department are greatly impressed with the attitude of the representatives in Washington of the allies throughout the present negotiations. While acting at all times under Instructions from their foreign offices, they have expedited matters considerably by their straightforward manner of dealing with Venezuela's representative. This fact has especially appealed to the Washington officials, who, while not taking part in the preliminaries, necessarily are vitally interested In their results.Port Townsliend, Wash., Jan. 26.—The steamship Dawson City, eighty-six days from Nome and long ago given up as lost, has reached port under sail after a tempestuous voyage. The entire trip was marked by a succession of accidents and exasperating delays, while the fury of the elements seemed to combine to hinder her passage to her destination. Soon after sthrtlng south the boilers began leaking, with the result that the fresh water supply was consumed. Then fuel began to run short, and the vessel was forced to resort to such canvas as could be fashioned into sails. After VoyaRe of Klorli t y-«l* Day* The operators do not expect any trouble tills winter, for they say that John Mitchell Is too shrewd to order a strike while the miners are under contract, knowing, as he does, that such action would deprive blin of the sympathy of the public and that all the inconvenieuce' and suffering that would result at this season of the year would be charged to his organization. The operators feel, however, that they are facing a crisis In the history of bituminous mining and that the alternative Is to be presented of granting an Increase or seeing their mines closed after April 1. In his address to the convention Mr. Mitchell referred to the $ 1.027,000 In the nntlonal treasury as the largest fund that was ever held at one time by any labor organization and spoke of increasing it to such an extent that the United Mine Workers would be able to cope with any conditions that might "lie hns served Colorado nearly a generation at Washington, and. whatever may be our regret that he no longer marches in the ranks of the party which has so highly honored him, every citizen of the state wishes hiin health and strength and believes that he is single handed in his devotion to the material interests of the state." Attitude of the Senate Toward It !■ Donbtfnl, Although Germany Is sending a special envoy here to conduct negotiations. Minister Bowen has taken occasion to express liis absolute satisfaction with the manuer in which Count Quadt has represented his government. The German charge d'affaires of course has been acting under .Instructions from Berlin, but the point Is made by Mr. Bowen and by an official of the Washington government that the activity of Germany's representative from the day of Mr. Bowen's arrival and the Judgment he has shown have done much to aid in bringing about an ultimate solution of the present trouble. Lynch's Sentence Will be Commuted. Washington, Jan. 20.—Senator Morgan of Alabama and other leading senators interested 111 the building of an isthmian canal who have believed that a treaty with Colombia providing for the Panama route was a mistake have not yet indicated their attitude toward its ratification. The vessel put Into Port Moller for fuel and water, and after remaining two weeks started again, only to run Into fierce storms which drove her from her course. Again the fuel ran out, so the Dawson City headed for Dutch Harbor to refill her bunkers and tanks. At this port her sailors deserted and refused to continue the voyage. The run from Dutch Harbor to this port was made in twenty-two days, which Is considered a very good showing.YOU GET THE BEST AT Mixed Pickles, 2 qts. Tlie Dawson City brought no passengers except her owner, Felix Brown of Seattle, and his wife. It is regarded as significant in thlB connection that the matter was referred to the scale committee, the presumption being that as that committee had formulated the demands for increased wages it had considered the whole subject carefully and understood what amount would be required to enforce Its demands should the operators reject the scale and a strike follow. Boots and Shoos. The importnnt fact developed that the triple alliance against Venezuela was far more comprehensive than was at first supposed. The agreement between Great Britain, Germany and Italy Involved not only a joint initiative action for the collection of their claims, but each of the three powers pledged Itself to lift the blockade siniultaue ously. You will always find our Shoes Highest in Quality but Lowest in Price. Boston, Jan. 20.—Jalin D. The malady Is a chronic kidney disorder, which was aggravated by ills arduous duties at Washington, which he relinquished, ns he said, to enable him to prolong his days. John D. It is understood lie will oppose the treaty unless he becomes convinced that it means n canal and without delay. Ambassador Meyer in an Accident. Among the delegates there is no concealment of purpose to make a square issue with the operators at the present time and if necessary invoke the strike as a last resort to win. They point to the fact that there is a large fund in the treasury and that this convention will take steps to increase It to even greater proportions, which would enable the bituminous miners to continue on a strike n year If need be to win. Sirloin SteaK Evans Bros. Rome, Jan. 26.—United States Am- Meyer, while going with the K:'ng for a day's hunting, met with an accident today. The automobile in which they were riding broke down. The occupants of the vehicle were shaken up badly but were not seriously injured. This fact was learned from a European diplomat who is acquainted with the details of the alliance and explains the fruitless efforts made by Ambassador Meyer nt Koine and Henry White, the American chnrge at I-ondon. as well us by Mr. Rowen, acting for Venezuela, to sever the agreement and secure the consent of at least one of the allies to lift the bloctahde. The Ironclad natiire of the alliance already has been communicated to the state department by Mr. White, and It is this fact which was responsible foi the grave apprehensions heretofore felt regarding the outcome of the dispute. The reply of the powers therefore necessarily will be joint. 46 S. Minister Bowen and also the state department are greatly impressed with the attitude of the representatives in Washington of the allies throughout the present negotiations.
