Stamford, Conn., Jan. 17.—Although three kinds of prohibitive authority have been brought to bear upon the proposed mouse killing contest of the Stamford Cat club, the president of the organization, Mrs. Homer S. Cummlngs, continues to smile. The Rev. Deiosove of Hartford, president of"the Connecticut Society For the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, has written ■ letter to the directors of the show iwhich was received yesterday morning. The mayor has announced that he will refuse to license the exhibition, and Mr. Adam Saul, who owns the armory where the show is to take place, Is talking about obtaining an injunction to prevent an irruption of the hordes of mice into the surrounding houses. The St. Louis made. signals to the South Shoal lightship, but a heavy gale was blowing, and it was impossible to make them out from shore. Asked it he was prepared to furnish as many cars as the men would load, he said: "Yes, and more, too." GOOD RESOLUTIONS From the very slow rate at which the St Louts was traveling It was assumed that the trouble was with her boilers, which have been in a leaky condition for some time. The Nantucket observers were confident that she was under control, for the signals displayed were not understood as signals of distress, and it is inferred that lack of steaming power was responsible both for her delay and for her slow progress at the time she was sighted. ALWAYS THE CHEAPEST. Mnnlla, Jan. 17.—At the trinl of Major Edwin F. Glenn of the Fifth Infantry, who is charged with unlawfully killing seven prisoners of war in Samar, a Spaniard who was at one time held prisoner by the insurgents testified that while he was confined at tho headquarters of General Lukban In Samar in Mny of 1000 he saw an American prisoner roasted to death. The Spaniard said sticks were driven into the man's body, and he was slowly turned over the fire until dead. The body was then left to be devoured by hogs. He, did not know the man's name, but thought he was an officer. Several American officers and men were captured or reported missing In Samar In 1900, and the victim is believed to have been one of these. "Why does the company take all this interest to collect these accounts, if it has no interest in these stores?" asked Judge Gray. "I cannot answer that question, bu,t believe several years ago the men requested some such'plan be adopted to insure their getting credit," replied Mr. Smith. He further declared that he did not know whether members of the company stockholders in the store, but he did know the stores were there before the Now York. Ontario and Western Co. acquired tne collieries. At a ten knot speed the St. Louis could have completed the trip in twelve days, but as thirteen days will have elapsed before she readies port shipping men are of the opinion that she made fair speed for the first two or three days, then became disabled and was obliged to stop her engines. The witness explained that the letter was sent after n mass meeting of the leading business men of Girardsvlile and nearby towns, who felt that the advent of troops would merely serve to stir up strife and cause added bloodshed. This was after General Gobin's famous "shoot to kill"! order. The witness declared that there had been very little disorder in and about Girardsvlile and that there was no necessity for troops. New York, Jan. 17.—The New York Central railroad has completed the purchase of practically the entiro Spuyten Duyvil waterfront. Mr. Tillman will also assert that when he aimed his pistol the second time at Mr. Gonzales he did so expecting Mr. Gonzales to defend himself and that he lowered his weapon because the re was no response and not because of anything Mr. Gonzales said. The sensation of today's session came when John Mitchell bitterly Attacked the operators, charging them with bad faith in having locked out 3.000 miners In defiance of theii1 agreement with the commission. While there is a groat deal of feeling over the nffair, it can be stated that there is absolutely no thought of violence against Lieutenant Governor Tillman ou the part of Mr. Gonzales' friends. All reports of threats against Tillman's life in the event that the strlckeu editor, should die are absolutely baseless, as it is the wish of Mr. Gonzales and his closest friends that the matter should be left for the courts to settle judicially. The Nantucket observers were confident that she was under control, for the signals displayed were not understood as signals of distress, and it is inferred that lack of steaming power was responsible both for her delay and for her slow progress at the time she was sighted. "I cannot answer that question, bu,t believe several years ago the men requested some such'plan be adopted to insure their getting credit," replied Mr. Smith.
