Public indignation was immediately aroused, and the lieutenant governor was hotly assailed, especially by Gonzales. Tillman said he would himself present the sword to Jenkins, but Jenkins declined to receive the sword from his hands because of his insult to the president. Citizens immediately had another and more costly sword mode, and this was presented to Major Jenkins by President Roosevelt before a great and enthusiastic assemblage. New York, Jan. 16.—J. Pierpont Morgan on the witness stand before the interstate commerce commission told the story of the Louisville and Nashville corner. Incidentally, he said he considered John W. Gates and the men who were in the Gates pool a dangerous element in the railroad world. The Gates men were not looking out for the interests of the stockholders in Louisville and Nashville and no one knew what they would do. With the experiences of the famous Northern Pacific corner fresh in their minds he said J. P. Morgan & Co. had believed it wise to put the stock in safe hands. Burr presented the case of the Elk Hill Coal and Iron Co. and -the Scranton Coal Co., the mining branches of the New York, Ontario and Western railroad. The evidence these operators will produce will be along the same general lines as that presented by the Delaware and Hudson, Hillside and Pennsylvania companies. After describing the Elk Hill and Scranton properties, Mr. Burr said: Columbia, S. C., Jan. 16.—Lieutenant Governor James H. Tillman shot and mortally wounded N. G. In these editorials Tillman was characterized as a liar, blackguard, debauchee and crimhial. Tillman said that he had been notified of the shooting of N. G. Gonzales by James H. Tillman, but he did not know the immediate causes of the shooting and would not discuss the reasons that may have led up to It. The last telegram Senator Tillman received slid the doctors had not given up hope of Gonzales' recovery. Senator Won't DIhpuhi Shooting. The statements filed show that the company Is paying fair wages, as fair as those paid by other operators engeged.in mining in the same region." CatM and Mice. This sums up what President Ilaines of the American Society For the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, had to S4iy When seen relative to the stand taken by the women of the Cat club in Stamford, Conn. Mr. Haines disclaimed any "interference" with the proposed mouse catching contest and said that his only action had been to call the attention of the Connecticut Humane society to the proposed violation of the humane statutes of that state. Mr. Haines firmly believes that the Connecticut society will take all the action necessary to prevent the "baiting" and says that it will not take place. The Gates pool hail bought enough contracts in the stock market to obtain control of Louisville and Nashville. These contracts included 50,000 shares of a new issue of stock which the directors of the Louisville and Nnslivllle road had sold, but which,' by the rules of the Stock Exchange, were not deliverable for thirty days. This put the Louisville and Nashville road "short" of its own stock, and both the Gates pool and the Louisville and Nashville people were in trouble. This authority gave 26 other occupations as more unheatihful than coaI mining. Dolan cited the fact that many miners are good singers as proof that coal mining does not affect the lungs seriously. Kelly, the former speaker of the house of delegates, charged with perjury in connection with the Suburban railway franchise deal, has been called for trial In Judge Ryan's division of the criminal court. A special venire of sixty jurors from which to select twelve to serve in the case has been summoned by the sheriff. Kelly tied from the city tbe day the indictment was found against him and remained in Europe for several weeks. He returned after the death of his child and was arrested in Philadelphia. C. F. Kelly on Trial, Boston, Jan. 10.—Santos-Dumont, the airship inventor, figured in the local divorce court by proxy as corespondent. He was named by L. E. P. Smith, New England agent of the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance company, who Is suing his wife, Adelaide Smith. Mrs. Smith is her husband's third wife and his housekeeper before their giarrlage. Indicted For Kllllns Cralar. Pittsfield, Mass., Jan. 10.—The grand jury in the case of Euclid Madden and Jumcs T. Kelly bus reported an indictment against each, charging manslaughter. These men were in charge of the el(?otric car which ran into the carriage of President Roosevelt last August, with the result that Secret Service Agent William Craig, who was guarding the president, was killed. Public indignation was immediately aroused, and the lieutenant governor was hotly assailed, especially by Gonzales. Tillman said he would himself present the sword to Jenkins, but Jenkins declined to receive the sword from his hands because of his insult to the president. Citizens immediately had another and more costly sword mode, and this was presented to Major Jenkins by President Roosevelt before a great and enthusiastic assemblage. New York, Jan. 16.—J. Pierpont Morgan on the witness stand before the interstate commerce commission told the story of the Louisville and Nashville corner. Incidentally, he said he considered John W. Gates and the men who were in the Gates pool a dangerous element in the railroad world. The Gates men were not looking out for the interests of the stockholders in Louisville and Nashville and no one knew what they would do. With the experiences of the famous Northern Pacific corner fresh in their minds he said J. P. Morgan & Co. had believed it wise to put the stock in safe hands. Burr presented the case of the Elk Hill Coal and Iron Co. and -the Scranton Coal Co., the mining branches of the New York, Ontario and Western railroad. The evidence these operators will produce will be along the same general lines as that presented by the Delaware and Hudson, Hillside and Pennsylvania companies. In these editorials Tillman was characterized as a liar, blackguard, debauchee and crimhial. The death of Cardinal ParocchI removes one of the prelates considered to be the most likely to succeed Pope Leo. YOU GET THE BEST AT Washington, Jan. 10.—Senator Benjamin R. Tillman said that he had been notified of the shooting of N. G. Gonzales by James H. Tillman, but he did not know the immediate causes of the shooting and would not discuss the reasons that may have led up to It. The last telegram Senator Tillman received slid the doctors had not given up hope of Gonzales' recovery. Senator Won't DIhpuhi Shooting. This sums up what President Ilaines of the American Society For the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, had to S4iy When seen relative to the stand taken by the women of the Cat club in Stamford, Conn. Mr. Haines disclaimed any "interference" with the proposed mouse catching contest and said that his only action had been to call the attention of the Connecticut Humane society to the proposed violation of the humane statutes of that state. Mr. Haines firmly believes that the Connecticut society will take all the action necessary to prevent the "baiting" and says that it will not take place. The Southern Hallway never had an Idea of buying and Nashville. ' Such a thing was out of the question, he said, for Louisville and Nashville and the Southern were competitive and parallel. The Gates pool hail bought enough contracts in the stock market to obtain control of Louisville and Nashville. These contracts included 50,000 shares of a new issue of stock which the directors of the Louisville and Nnslivllle road had sold, but which,' by the rules of the Stock Exchange, were not deliverable for thirty days. This put the Louisville and Nashville road "short" of its own stock, and both the Gates pool and the Louisville and Nashville people were in trouble. This authority gave 26 other occupations as more unheatihful than coaI mining. Dolan cited the fact that many miners are good singers as proof that coal mining does not affect the lungs seriously. St. Louis, Jan. 10—The case of Charles P. Kelly, the former speaker of the house of delegates, charged with perjury in connection with the Suburban railway franchise deal, has been called for trial In Judge Ryan's division of the criminal court. A special venire of sixty jurors from which to select twelve to serve in the case has been summoned by the sheriff. Kelly tied from the city tbe day the indictment was found against him and remained in Europe for several weeks. He returned after the death of his child and was arrested in Philadelphia. C. F. Kelly on Trial, Boston, Jan. 10.—Santos-Dumont, the airship inventor, figured in the local divorce court by proxy as corespondent. He was named by L. E. P. Smith, New England agent of the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance company, who Is suing his wife, Adelaide Smith. Mrs. Smith is her husband's third wife and his housekeeper before their giarrlage. He alleges that she led a g*y life for a time in Europe. Indicted For Kllllns Cralar. Pittsfield, Mass., Jan. 10.—The grand jury in the case of Euclid Madden and Jumcs T. Kelly bus reported an indictment against each, charging manslaughter. These men were in charge of the el(?otric car which ran into the carriage of President Roosevelt last August, with the result that Secret Service Agent William Craig, who was guarding the president, was killed.
