J, Stop—Rather Fruitless Day. Washington, Jan. 13.—It Is probable a Joint resolution will be passed before the close of the present week providing for the free admission of coal of every description for a period of six months. Washington, N. J., Jan. 13.—Because he objected to roystering la which his wife, sou and Frank Gordon engaged, John Beers, an old farmer of Good Springs, Franklin township, Is said to have been beaten by tlieni, chained In a dilapidated barn and held there a prisoner for several days. lie was bound in such a manner, it is alleged, that he had to get on his hands and knees to eat the little food put on the floor of the barn for liim. IL'was famished and nearly dead when rescued by neighbors. Philadelphia, Jan. 13.—Immediately upon the opening of the arbitration commission session this morning, Thomas F. Torrey, general salesagent "ftf the pelaware and Hudson Co., took the stand. He testified that the company had practically no control over the prices of coal in New York. Almost itBe entire production tff its mines is sold to the Hillside Coal and Iron Co. and the Erie railroad, and shipped from either CarbOndale or Honesdale. being delivered f. o. b at Hoboken. This Is done in accordance with a contract these companies have with the Delaware and Hudson. The latter, lie said, received 65 per cent, of the price which the Hillside and Erie companies are able to get for prepared slzc/i of coal In Hoboken. On pea, the D. & H. Co. receives 50 per cent, and on buckwheat 40 per cent. H.G.SHUPP As the maddened animals dashed down the hill toward College creek the driver, seeking to stop them, suddenly turned their heads into a vacant lot between two houses. Secretary Moody, who had opened the door of the carriage as the horses dashed over the frozen ground, leaped to the pavement as the carriage made the turn into the Inclosure. He landed on his face on the pavement and was rendered unconscious by the shock. NOW GOING ON. Since the beginning of the debate on the Vest resolution the Republicans have been uneasy in regard to the imposition of 67 cents per ton on anthracite under the Dingley act, and the efforts of Messrs. Aldrlcli, Allison and Piatt of Connecticut to explain the manner and reason for Imposing the duty and their claim that there is really no duty on that commodity have had the effect of aggravating rather than appeasing popular feeling over the matter. The battalion of midshipmen had broken ranks without orders as the carriage dashed by, and very soon the secretary was lifted by tender hands and carried to the neaby residence of Superintendent Brownson, whertf he shortly recovered consciousness. Slight cuts and bruises on Ills forehead, nose and face are thought to be the extent of the secretary's injuries. Neither Senator Hale nor Lieutenant 1'oyer was injured, as the horses were brought up against a wall Shortly after making the turn into the open lot. portunity to save money. New York, Jan. 13.—Captain George S. C'liapiiian, in some respects the most picturesque character of the police force, has retired, accepting a yearly pension of $1,375. Although he hail maile fame for himself before, it was when he entered the Tenderloin as captain that the name of Captain Chapman became known the whole country over. He was sung about on the stage, and few stories were told in which he dill not figure. The scarcity of coal, the apparent indifference of those in charge of the mines and the transportation lines to the prevailing distress and the combinations of middlemen anil dealers to profit from the situation have had the effect to incense the people throughout the country. This lias induced Republican leaders to take a step calculated to bring partial relief. Dealers in High Grade CARPETS, RUGS, Gordon, after being arrested, admitted some of the cruelties practiced on the old man, but said it was all done in a "Joke." PEOPLE S STORE ART SQUARES, Oil Clotlis and Linoleums, Wall 15 South Main St., Pittston. "Mr. Torrey," asked Commissioner Watklns, "Can you tell me where the commission can secure the average price of anthracite coal, of all sizes, delivered in New York, for the past ten years? Can you furnish figures for your company?" lie and certain characters from villages and towns In tills section have made it a practice for'years to visit the Beers house, and it is said they would immediately chase the old man out ot the house hi order that their roysterlng, to which he objected, would not be disturbed.Paper, Paints and Oils. Painters and Paperhangars. Have a Look! When Clirtpman raided the "Seeley dinner," he added the cap sheaf to his reputation. Herbert B. Seeley gave a bachelors' dinner in a well known restaurant. There were various forms of entertainment, Including the dancing of "Little Egypt," Who refused to be bound by the ordinary proprieties. She was dancing when Captain Chapman burst into the room, declaring all present under arrest. Indictments followed and as well a trial of the captain at headquarters. The result Cfcas a draw. During last week there were several conferences at the White House between the president and the leading members of the ways nud means and finance committees, the result of which is ft decision to report a bill for allowing a rebate on all kinds of coal Imported until July 1 equal to the full amount of the duty paid. It was urged last eel; by some of the Republican senators in conference with leaders of the house that a joint resolution revoking the duty on anthracite coal should lie reported to the house by the ways anil means committee In order to remove the controversy from tlie senate and satisfy the popular demand for action by congress in this direction. Conferences n* White House. GOOD RESOLUTIONS "Well, I guess so," hesitatingly replied the witness. "I don-'t, as the company would object to it." "The question Is not as to the company's objection,'' sternly remarked General Wilson, "but as to your ability to furnish such figures." Geneva, Jan. 13.—A particularly long Interview took plueo between Maitre Lachenul, Princess Louise's lawyer, and Dr. Kurner, the legal representative of King George of Saxony. The princess, ou being applied to upon the suggestions that she had cooled in her feelings toward M. Glron iuid proposed returning MD Saxony, refused to reply "Yes" or "No," but a voluminous correspondence passing between the two seems to contradict the flrst Idea and shows them to possess thorough confidence In each other. People here who saw thein together such a little while ago do not believe any coolness exists nor that the princess will go anywhere without M. Glron. PrlnceMs Won't Leave Glron, Aie the Order of the Day AT OUR PRICES. Complaint was finally made by neighbors to Overseer of the Poor Huff of Franklin township. He found the old man bruised from head to foot, the re suit of a beating he received, it is said, at the hands of Gordon. The barn in which Beers was chained had only halt a roof, and ho might almost us well been out in the open. The chain was fastened around Beers' body and neck in such a manner that he was compelled to crawl along the floor to reach the food left for hlin. Some farmers living near the Beers place found hlni in the barn anil released him. Tlifn there was talk of forming a white cup party, but calmer counsel prevailed and the case was left for the authorities.Complaint Made lDy Neighbors. An effort was also made to learn from the witness what portion of the 35 per cent, freight charges the D. & H. Co. received as lateral charges for that proportion of transportation dohe on town lines, but General Wilson refused, to allow this line of testimony to be taken. Attorneys Darrow and Torrey got into a lively wrangle over this question and Indulged in a few personalities, whereupon General Wilson leaped up ai)d fairly shouted: "These personalities must stop. Before the adjournment for the Christinas holidays Mr. Hill (Conn.), who succeeded the late Mr. Bussell as n member of the ways and rneuns committee, Introduced a bill to provide for a drawback of duties on coal imported prior to July 1 of this year, but Mr. Iilll limited the operations of his Mil to ports on the Atlantic coast, unmindful of the fact that the constitution specifically declares that "all duties, Imposts and excises shull be uniform throughout the United States." A most remarkable instance recently took place in the laboratories of E. C. DeWitt & Co., of Chicago, where chemical experiments are regularly carried on. In the test referred to. onef teaspoonful of Kodel, a preparation consisting of a combination of vegetable acids and the natural peptones which a healthy stomach should containNand the preparing of which is the result of scientific res, each and experiments, was placed in a glass tub experiments, was placed in a glass tube containing 3,000 grains of food, consisting of mince pie, molasses ckndy, sponge cake, white bread, boiled ham, pork fat, roast beef, boiled potatoes. Cheese, hard boiled eggs, nuts and baked beans. This food was placed in a tube in its original state, the tube was placed in water and heated over alcohol lamps until It reached a temperature of 103 degrees, which is the normal temperature of the stomach. In the short time of four hours the entire mass of food was thoroughly digested, the action of the Kodol having been more complete In its work than It is possible even for the most healthy stomach to accomplish, and It is not believed that there is one person out of 100 whose stomach would have so completely -digested this mass of food. There are preparations which will digest certain classes of food, but the great desideratum has been to obtain one that will digest all classes of food. This has been found in this important discovery. Kodol is considered in medical science the flr.st discovery of a preparation that contains the exact juices and acldB that are to be found in a healthy stomach. Kodol contains them in just the same proportions, constituting it an absolutely harmless preparation and the most completely effective digesta'nt known to science, immediately relieving indigestion and permanently curing dyspepsia. Thai. J. Yate3 has lies? fortunate enough to secure the agency for Kodol. riattsburg. N. Y., Jan. 13— Attorney General John C'unneeri was to have given a hearing In the application of William K. Hearst for the institution of an action against the coal carrying railroad companies under the antitrust law of the state. An application of the attorneys for the various companies pleadiHg Insufficient time in which to prepare answers to the petition resulted In a postponement of the hearing for two weeks. The companies have ten days In which to file their answers. Conl IlearlnK Postponed, Kodol does for the stomach that which it is unable to do for itself, even when but slightly disordered or overloaded. Kodol supplies the natural juices of digestion and does the work of the stomach, relaxing the nervous tension, while the inflamed muscles ot that organ are allowed to rest and heal. Kodol digests what you eat and enables the stomach and digestive organs to transform all food into rich, red blood. At the same time a rule will be reported from the committee on rules providing for the immediate consideration of the drawback bill and a vote thereon before adjournment for the day. Sail Juan, Porto Itico, Jan. 13.—The insular legislature has convened. At the joint session of both houses the legislature recommended that the island surrender all claim to those publie lands which may be set aside by President Iloosevelt for national purposes, and the legislature will grant sites for American naval stations here and at Culclira. It is understood that this plan is in pursuance of an agreement with regard to the location of naval stations in these waters which has been effected with Washington. Porto Rico Leiclalature Meet*. AFTER XMAS SALE The Democrats will doubtless make an effort to have the bill open to amendment, but that will not be conceded. If passed by the house, ns now seems likely, there is no reason why the bill should not be considered and disposed of affirmatively by the senate and sent to the president for approval before the close of the week. m MAGNET Chicago Cash Meat Market. Since the beginning of the debate on the Vest resolution the Republicans have been uneasy in regard to the imposition of 67 cents per ton on anthracite under the Dingley act, and the efforts of Messrs. A most remarkable instance recently took place in the laboratories of E. Kodol supplies the natural juices of digestion and does the work of the stomach, relaxing the nervous tension, while the inflamed muscles ot that organ are allowed to rest and heal. Kodol digests what you eat and enables the stomach and digestive organs to transform all food into rich, red blood.
