Daniel H. Hastings, ex-Governor of Pennsylvania, died this morning at 10 o'clock at his home in this city. Governor Hastings's death was very sudden. He returned to his home here last Sunday morning in his usual health, after a visit to Philadelphia. Last night's report from the Hastings home was to the effect that there was some Improvement in the patient's condition, but a change for the worse came early this morning. A flagman was sent back to notify No. 19, a fast train going in the same direction, which was several minutes late. On account of the driving snowstorm the engineer on No. 19 was unable to see the signal in time to slacken his speed, and his engine crashed Into the rear coach of No. 35 at the rate of forty miles an hour. No. 35 consisted of two coaches, the rear one boiir; a combination baggage aud passenger car, with another passenger car in front. Both were telescoped, and scarcely a passenger escaped Injury of some sort. Tlie- engineer and fireman on No. 19 were also slightly hurt, but not enough to prevent them from rendering Immediate assistance to those who were in greater distress. He came of Scotch- Irish stock; received his education in the public schools, taught school several years; studied law and was admitted to the bar in April, 1875, and practiced in Bellefonte Th» deceased Joined the National Guard during the riots of 1877 and was successively cap. tain, lieutenant-colonel and Colonel of the Fifth regiment, N. G. P. Later he was'assistant adjutant general of the Second brigade, and for four years was adjutant general of the State. As such he had charge of the relief work conducted in the Conemaugh Valley after the great Johnstown flood. In 1887 General Hastings was chairman of the Republican State convention; in 1888, was delegate-at-large to the Republican national convention in Chicago; in 1895, was elected permanent chairman of the Republican State convention; in 1896, was delegate-at-large and chairman of the Pennsylvania delegation to the St. Louis Republican national convention and placed Senator Quay, In nomination for the presidency; in 1894, was elected governor of Pennsylvania by 241,397 plurality. It appears that trouble has existed for several weeks lietween Acting Superintendent J. A. Traylor and the local miners' union. A committee of eight men representing the union waited on Mr. Traylor at the eomiiany's offices and asked for a consultation. Traylor and a companion named John Gaskill, it is stated. Immediately drew their guns and llred on these men, killing two nnd mortally wounding two others, of the miners were armed. Gaskill were captured and placed; in jail, guarded by fifty armed men. O., Jan. 9.—A fusillade of shots was fired in a fight between union and nonunion bill jiosters nenr the corner of Prosi»ect and Erie streets. No one, however, wus injured. The union men are on strike, and five of them, it is alleged, were aliout to attack Joseph Cronln. a nonunionist. The latter drew his revolver and began firing. Frank Sanderson, one of the union men. returned the fire, all the bullets going wild. Cronin jumped on a moving eur, pursued by Sanderson, still shooting and creating a panic among the twenty passengers. At this point both men were overpowered and arrested. Sbati Fired In Strike Riot. Then the train waD stopped and backed to the scene of the accident to get orders. No damage was done to the engine on the flier, but it was learned that a piece of the wreckage flew Into the cab as the train dashed past and painfully bruised the engineer. A flagman was sent back to notify No. 19, a fast train going in the same direction, which was several minutes late. On account of the driving snowstorm the engineer on No. 19 was unable to see the signal in time to slacken his speed, and his engine crashed Into the rear coach of No. 35 at the rate of forty miles an hour. No. 35 consisted of two coaches, the rear one boiir; a combination baggage aud passenger car, with another passenger car in front. Both were telescoped, and scarcely a passenger escaped Injury of some sort. Tlie- engineer and fireman on No. 19 were also slightly hurt, but not enough to prevent them from rendering Immediate assistance to those who were in greater distress. The leader of the revolution la called "Matos, the German," by the press. Daniel Hartman Hastings was born In Lamar township, Clinton county, Pa., Feb. 26, 1849. He came of Scotch- Irish stock; received his education in the public schools, taught school several years; studied law and was admitted to the bar in April, 1875, and practiced in Bellefonte Th» deceased Joined the National Guard during the riots of 1877 and was successively cap. tain, lieutenant-colonel and Colonel of the Fifth regiment, N. G. P. Later he was'assistant adjutant general of the Second brigade, and for four years was adjutant general of the State. As such he had charge of the relief work conducted in the Conemaugh Valley after the great Johnstown flood. In 1887 General Hastings was chairman of the Republican State convention; in 1888, was delegate-at-large to the Republican national convention in Chicago; in 1895, was elected permanent chairman of the Republican State convention; in 1896, was delegate-at-large and chairman of the Pennsylvania delegation to the St. Louis Republican national convention and placed Senator Quay, In nomination for the presidency; in 1894, was elected governor of Pennsylvania by 241,397 plurality. O., Jan. 9.—A fusillade of shots was fired in a fight between union and nonunion bill jiosters nenr the corner of Prosi»ect and Erie streets. No one, however, wus injured. The union men are on strike, and five of them, it is alleged, were aliout to attack Joseph Cronln. a nonunionist. The latter drew his revolver and began firing. Frank Sanderson, one of the union men. returned the fire, all the bullets going wild. Wreckage was strewn all over the tracks, and in a few minutes the Chicago and New York limited, eastboiind, dashed through ou the other track at sixty miles an hour and hurled the aceuniu lnted debris in all directions, but never pausing in its flight until half a mile from the town. Then the train waD stopped and backed to the scene of the accident to get orders. No damage was done to the engine on the flier, but it was learned that a piece of the wreckage flew Into the cab as the train dashed past and painfully bruised the engineer.
