Seattle, Wash., Jan. 7.—A special from Port Townshend says that news of the wreck of the Norwegian bark Prince Arthur and the death by drowning of eighteen of the crew lias been received. The Prince Arthur was bound from Valparaiso for British Columbia to load timber. On the night of Jan. 2 the vessel ran into breakers and was soon hard and fast on the rocky shore. The scene of the disaster Is about two miles south of Ozette, on the Washington coast, fifteen miles from Cape Flattery. This Is precisely the position from which tho German bark Flotbek was rescued by tugs in the winter of 1000. As the Umatilla light vessel lies about three miles offshore from Oiette it la believed the latter mistook the lightship for Tatoosh Island and sailed eastward, believing she was entering the striilts Instead of running blindly to her fute. In opening th» defense announced that It had declined to submit Interrogatories for depositions ordered by Secretary of War Hoot on the ground that the question of summoning witnesses rested with the court, and submitted a written argument urging the right and Justice of having witnesses. This argument charged that the records of the Sixth brigade, commanded by General Smith, had been tampered with and thut important documents had been removed. It Is said the defense desired to examine General Smith with regard to these documents, as well as concerning certain written and verbal orders, for the purpose of showing the character of the campaign he desired to have .waged, and that General Clinffee was wanted for the ptlrposcfbf obtaining certain orders and documents iylikii were not recorded at division headquarters.
