MAKING A BEEF TRUST ADVANTAGES Governor of Gnam Tells About His Washington, Doc. 27.—The nnnunl report of Commander Beaton Scliroeder, governor of toe island of Guam, has Just reached tne navy department. It indicates a rather serious condition in the island finances owing to the failure of congress to appropriate the sum asked for last year. The receipts last year were In round numbers $C10,000 and the expenditures $57,000, leaving a balance of $8,000, which, however, Is n decrease of over $13,000 in the cash balance for the preceding year. The value bf the exports and imports during the year have been respectively $3.1,541) and $35,105. The exports consisted almost entirely of Mexican dollars. Not a pound of copra has been exported, and neither cocoa nor eolTee lias bectr-produced in sufficient quantities to mipplj the home market owing to the slow recovery from the effects of the hurricane of 1000. The governor suggests that it would be a great boon if the department of agriculture would establish an experimental station on the island. the South American Imbroglio. Would Answer all the Purposes of Washington, Dec. 27.—Great relief is felt in official circles over the triumph of President Roosevelt In persuading the powers to accept The Hague tribunal as the court of arbitration of the Venezuelan difficulty. Colonial Secretary Warmly "Wel- comed at Durban, a Real Trust. London, Ontario, Dec. 27.—A terrible wreck, involving the loss of probably 40 lives and the serious Injury of as many others, occurred about midnight last night on the Grank Trunk railroad, at Wanstead, about 20 miles east of this city. The accident was in the nature of a head-on collision between the westbound Pacific express train, known to railroaders as No. 6, and a fast eastbound freight train. The express train was given a clear track and right of way on leaving the division headquarters here, and no explanation is yet forthcoming of the fact that the train crashed into the freight train, which was standing on a switch at Wanstead. The express was an hour behind schedule time when it left this city and should have passed the freight at Strathroy. Durban, Natal, Dec. 27.—Colonial Secretary Chamberlain and Mrs. Chamberlain, who left Portsmouth. England, Nov. 25 on board the armored cruiser Good Hope, have landed here. They received a warm welcome from large crowds of people. H-G.SHUPP Now on Sale Chicago, Dec. 27.—Is the new packing concern Incorporated In New Jersey Tuesday under the name of Morris & Co., with a capital stock of $3,- 000,000, the nucleus of the long talked of meat trust? His endeavors to bring about this much desired outcome have been at nil times thoroughly consistent and actuated only by the highest motives not only for a peaceful settlement of the present dispute, but for the purpose of establishing a precedent to avert future unbearable situations of a similar character.IEWELER, 3G W. MAEKET STREET. AT COST. The long speeches made by Mr. Chamberlain In the course of the reception functions were notable for their strong tone of conciliation and as expressing his confidence in Lord Milner, British high commissioner In .South Africa. Bearing in mind, seemingly, the rumors that his visit would lead to the displacement of Lord Milner, Mr. Chamberlain declared his belief that his visit would have the effect ot strengthening Lord Milner's hand, who, he hoped, would be as great in conciliation as he had been in the maintenance of the rights of the empire. The question is suggested by the blanket charter Issued to the company and by the noncommittal attitude of the Chicago Incorporators who compose the firm of Nelson Morris & Co. A High Class Bargain List Edward .Morris of Nelson Morris & Co. admitted that tile principal members of his firm were the incorporators of the new firm of Morris & Co., but refused to state for what pui'iiose the new company was organized further than to say that it was a matter of convenience. The governor recommends that If a Philippine silver dollar of fixed vulue Is to be coined under the laws of the Unit ed Slates It be made legal tender also In Guam In place of the present Mexican dollar. The present hopeful status of the situation, which at one time seriously threatened the Interests of this country, Is regarded in Washington as a distinct victory for President Roosevelt's administration both as a national and international factor. PEOPLE S STORE New Currants New Raisins 15 South Main St., Fittston. The census of the Island shows the totnl population to be '.1,070. Above the age of seven 45 per cent of the natives read and write Spanish. He says that the natives still continue to refuse to allow their sick to receive medical attention, but that conditions are improving, an excess of births over deaths being shown for each of the last two years. New Apricots Nearly all the victims of the disaster were occupants of the smoking car. This car, which was filled with men, was telescoped "by two baggage care, which were Jammed back over the smqker when 'the monstrous engines met. Hardly a ptrson In the car escaped death or injuiy. Many of the dead were frightfully mangled. The Injured suffered mainly from broken limbs. Darkness shroudeij the wreck for hours, making It impossible to learn Ju?t how serious an affair it was or to recover the victims. Shortly after the collision, the wreckage took Are, and but for the heroic efforts of the surviving passengers, led by an old man, who organized a fire brigade, the results would have been still more shocking. The passengers extinguished the flames by throwing snow upon them with their hats. Then they turned their attention to recovering the victims of the accident, whose sufferings were aggravated by the intense cold and.a blinding snow storm. The temperature was down to zero. Within a couple of hours relief trains arrived from this city and then the work of rescue and caring for the victims proceeded more rapidly. A special train brought the bodies of the dead and the Injured passengers to this city. The latest estimate places the number of the dead at 40 and that of the injured at probably 35 or 40. No official declaration has been made that all the parties to the dispute have agreed to accept The Hague tribunal, but that a practical agreement has been made, with certain conditions attached which are now In the process of being eliminated, can be stated on the authority of a cabinet officer. Incorporators Noncommittal. Now Honeycomb 12 %c . .25c Referring to the war, the colonial secretary said the Dutch and the British had fought in courageous rivalry. Between the two races, not kindred in origin or nature, such a struggle foi supremacy had been Inevitable. From that struggle two proud and "kindred races would grow in mutual respect, appreciation and lasting friendship. In reply to questions XIr. Morris said the New Jersey corporation of Morris & Co. is not a branch of Nelson Morris & Co., but an independent corporation. To the question whether the new corporation was organized to handle the eastern business of Nelson Morris & Co. Mr. Morris replied in the negative and would make no further statement than to repeat that the new firm was organized by Nelson Morris & Co. as a matter of convenience. On account of the diplomatic negotiations still In progress toward a removal of all conditions that are likely to prove obstacles, Secretary Hay is not yet ready to make an official announcement. There Is decided inclination in official circles to remain silent on the question. Only the Indefinite statement Is made that distinct progress toward arbitration by The Hague was reported to the cabinet meeting by Secretary Hay. ■aeretary Ilny'a Attitude, Henry M. Wolf, attorney for Nelson Morris & Co., said: "The new concern is purely a private corporation. The capital stock of the new company is the same as that of the Chicago firm ($3,000,000), consisting of 30,000 shares of the par value of $100 each. Dun & Co.'s weekly review of trade says: Later—Responsibility for the wreck appears to rest with the operator at Watford, who, it is said, failed to give the conductor of the express train an order to meet the freight at Wanstead. For the last two days the diplomats of England have united their efforts with those of the United States, who were under the direction of the president in this purpose, and they have been an important factor In the final agreement with Germany. Trade and speculction experienced the customary holiday quiet except in Christmas goods, which sold freely, many pucking and shipping departments being still engaged on this class of work which could not be completed nt the specified time. Industrial undertakings are interrupted in many cases by the taking of Inventories, while other plauts are closed because fuel cannot be obtained. OrderB still come forward freely, and the new yew will open with more business 011 the books than ever before. Prices of commodities are firmly held by the steady domestic demand, and there is n good export movement of the leading staples. It covers everything that would be necessary to operate either a single enterprise or the most gigantic combination of puckers that could be organized. It wus suggested lu the event tliut the chnrter wus to be used for tlie purpose of consolidating the largo packing Interests of the country that tlie recent drop in the price of meat might have Imsteuud the efforts of the packers In this direction and would account for the issuance at this time of the New Jersey blanket charter. ROBBERS MAKE BIG HAUL. The various stages that led up to the present situation can be briefly stated, and a mere glance at them will show that great credit Is due to President Roosevelt and the United States government for Its uttitude throughout the entire controversy. Bank in Union, Missouri, Robbed of Evans Bros. About $15,000. Union, Mo., Dec. 27.—The Bank of Union, was robbed early this morning by a band of expert robbers, who forced an entrance through the front door and then forced the vault and safe open with nltro-glycerine. The robbers secured about $15,000 and escaped.4(1 S. Main St. Pittston. The president first used the good offices of this government to suggest arbitration. The general principle of arbitration was obtained. Great Britain and Germany, once yielding on this point, made it a condition that President Roosevelt himself should be the arbitrator, a position which he refused to accept until nil other means to obtain arbitration should fall. Ashkabad, Russian Turkestan. Dec 27.—The oscillations of the earth at Andijan continue. The people there are using railroad cars to live In. They are not leaving the town on account of their business Interests. Committees have been appointed to prepare lists of the losses to life and property. In the Andijan district 15.000 houses have been destroyed. Until the shocks cease guards will be kept on the railroad between Andljnn and Fedohenks to watch for fissures along the line. Ninety-nine out Of every 100 turn to the right The president replied to this by urging The Hague tribunal as the only proper board of arbitration. He was advised by prominent members of his cabinet and statesmen In both branches of congress not to accept the position of arbitrator, and it can be said that he never had any Idea of doing so, except as a last resort. He insisted that the court of The Hague was the place where international disputes of this nature should be settled. One well-known firm's letterout of many «*W.
