His invention makes telephony possible over a distance four times greater than by the (system generally in use at present. So perfect is the transmission in, articulation that it has been, found !n actual experiments by the German government that conversation can be satisfactorily maintained at a distance of thirty feet from the receiver, although those telephoning are a hundred miles apart. Professor Pupln'g invention was first brought into publicity in January, 1001, when he sold the patents governing his American rights to the American Bell Telephone and Telegraph company for a sum said by Professor Pupln at the time to be about $500,000. His invention, while not new, has now Its details and capability first authoritatively described In the recent official report of the German government on the system, which verifies not only all that was claimed for the invention In this country, but even goes far beyond the American estimates. Lord Lansdowne announced that a proposal had been received from the United States, government that the claims of the British and German subjects against Venezuela be eubmitted to arbitration. Abroad it offers no difficulty in the way of establishing direct telephonic communication between Berlin and London, Berlin apd Copenhagen, Paris and St Petersburg, Berlin and Stockholm, etc. The problem of transatlantic telephony has also become a possibility through this invention, but will only be feasible by the laying of a new Atlantic cable at a very large expense. It was to the Siemens & Halske company, the great electrical firm of Europe, with houses in Berlin, Paris and St. Petersburg, that "Professor Pupln sold his European patents. For a year Messrs. F. Dolezalek and A. Ebeling, two engineers of the Siemens & Halske, company, conducted investigations of the Pupin invention in conjunction with the German imperial postal telegraph and telephone bureau. 57 S. Death came peacefully, the sufferer ■ retaining almost complete consciousness practically to the end. Word has come from Jesse and Ulysses S. Grant, two of the sons now In California, that they have started on their way to Washington. The other son, General Fred Grant, Is In Texas, and he will hasten here as soon as he receives a message telling him of his mother's death. The remains of Mrs. Grant will be deposited In the tomb at Riverside park, New York, where those tit her husband now repose. Whether they will be taken there Immediately or this ceremony will be postponed for a time could not be ascertained at the house last night. FATAL TENEMENT FIRE. New York, Dec. lij.—Fourteen families were asleep in a tenement house at 2,412 First avenue when fire started in the building at an early hour this morning. The building was ruined. Three members of one family loet their lives. They were: Mary Bond, aged 32 years; Raymond Bond, aged 7 years; Rosle Bond, aged S years. Edward Bond, aged 40 years, and Helen Bond, aged i years, were badly burned. Blar Fire In Boston. Boston, Dec. 15.—Through streets knee deep with snow apparatus from all sections of the city responded to a four alarm fire In the Hnthaway building, '208 to 218 Summer street, which caused a damage of $75,000. The building, which Is seven stories In height, with a frontage of 200 feet, is occupied by printing and bookbinding firms and wool dealers. A thick party wall saved the latter, who occupy the front half of the building, from fire loss. The fire started on the seventh floor rear, occupied by the Estes Press, and worked Its way downward until at one time four upper floors were in flames, fanned by a brisk wind. S. The results obtained were in perfect agreement with Professor Pupin's mathematical theory, and they were so remarkable that their very recent publication in German scientific journals had produced quite a sensation among German scientists and in the German press. If a Man 8ms to a Tailor A Score of Trainmen Caught Under Mrs. Grant, whose maiden name was Julia Dent, was born In St. Louis lu 1826 and was the daughter of Frederick and Ellen Wreushall Dent. She was married to General, then Captain, Grant In 1848. During the civil war Mr*. Grant was with the general much of the time and remained as near as possible to him when he was campaigning. She saw her husband twice Inaugurated as president and accompanied him on his Journey around the Sorld. As mistress of the White House le gave liberally to all the charitable Institutions of the city. Four children were born to General and Mrs. Grant, three sons and one daughter, all of whom are living. Miss Nellie, the daughter, who became the wife of Algernon Sartoris in 1874, has lived In Washington with her mother for several years. Frederick Dent Grant, the oldest son, Is In the army, and two other sons, Jesse and Ulysses Sherman, live at San Diego, Cal. St. Louis, Dec. 15.—Eight defendants, former members of the house of delegates, will be called in Judge O'Nell Ryan's .division of the criminal court to answer to the charge of bribery in connection with the suburban bill. They are Charles Denny, John A. Sheridan, Edtbond Bertch, Emlle Hnrtman, Charles A. Gutke, J. J. Hannigan, Churles Kelly and Julius Lehmann. The attorneys for the defense have given notice that a change of venue will be asked for. If this shall be denied, the cases will be called immediately, and unless the defendants shall ask for a severance it will be a combination trial. The St. Louis Boodle Trials. Chicago, Dec. 15. — The tariff bill passed by the German relchstag, Chicago packers say, will deprive them of almost 25 per cent of their provision export trade, exclusive of fresh meats, and the packers already, are preparing to urge the United States government to take some action that will give them relief. William C. Evans of the foreign department of Armour & Co., who returned to Chicago from Berlin, where he had been In the interests of the house he represents, said the bill would deprive the American packers of nearly all their German export trade. Five Killed la Railroad Wreck, Kansas City, Mo., Dec. 15.—A special to the Star from Bucklln, Mo., says that a serious wreck occurred on the Hannibal and St Joseph railroad. A local freight was wrecked four miles west of Bucklln. A steam wrecker was sent to the scene from Brookfleld. The wrecked engine went through the bridge at Yellow creek. Five persons were killed, and Engineer Good was fatally Injured and half a dozen others seriously hurt. AU the victims were railroad employees. During recent years, since General Grant's death, Mrs. Grant has spent most of her winters in this city, living at 2111 Q street, while during the summer she usually lived nt Saratoga, Manchester-by-the-Sea and other popular resorts, until the last two summers, when she resided with her daughter, Mrs. Sartoris, at Coburg, Ont. She also made several visits to her sons In California during the last few years. She was of domestic temperament and devoted most of her time to her home and children. She cared little for society and always avoided public notice as much as possible. Her devotion to her husband was remarkable, and during the latter's unsuccessful years before the civil war and when his fortune was swept away shortly before his death Mrs. Grant always bore herself bravely and was an inspiration to him. Commencing Nov. 13, the Washington and Southwestern Limited, composed of Pullman drawing room, sleeping, observation-library, club and dining cars, operated dally between New York. Philadelphia and New Orleans, via the Pennsylvania railroad and the Southern Railway, leaving Pniladelphia At 6.55 p. m.. In addition will carry a special Sunset Limited annex Pullman drawing room compartment sleeping car, to connect with the Sunset Limited, which will be operated dally this season between New Orleans, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Many Soldiers Drowned. Xmas Values Colon, Colombia, via Galveston, Tex., Dec. 15.—Advices from Barranqullla confirm the report of the total wreck of the steamer Bogota in the Magdalena river recently near El Banco. Abroad it offers no difficulty in the way of establishing direct telephonic communication between Berlin and London, Berlin apd Copenhagen, Paris and St Petersburg, Berlin and Stockholm, etc. The problem of transatlantic telephony has also become a possibility through this invention, but will only be feasible by the laying of a new Atlantic cable at a very large expense. It was to the Siemens & Halske company, the great electrical firm of Europe, with houses in Berlin, Paris and St. Petersburg, that "Professor Pupln sold his European patents. For a year Messrs. F. Dolezalek and A. Ebeling, two engineers of the Siemens & Halske, company, conducted investigations of the Pupin invention in conjunction with the German imperial postal telegraph and telephone bureau. 57 S. Grant, two of the sons now In California, that they have started on their way to Washington. The other son, General Fred Grant, Is In Texas, and he will hasten here as soon as he receives a message telling him of his mother's death. The remains of Mrs. Grant will be deposited In the tomb at Riverside park, New York, where those tit her husband now repose. Whether they will be taken there Immediately or this ceremony will be postponed for a time could not be ascertained at the house last night. FATAL TENEMENT FIRE. New York, Dec. lij.—Fourteen families were asleep in a tenement house at 2,412 First avenue when fire started in the building at an early hour this morning. The building was ruined. Three members of one family loet their lives. They were: Mary Bond, aged 32 years; Raymond Bond, aged 7 years; Rosle Bond, aged S years. Edward Bond, aged 40 years, and Helen Bond, aged i years, were badly burned. Blar Fire In Boston. Boston, Dec. 15.—Through streets knee deep with snow apparatus from all sections of the city responded to a four alarm fire In the Hnthaway building, '208 to 218 Summer street, which caused a damage of $75,000. The building, which Is seven stories In height, with a frontage of 200 feet, is occupied by printing and bookbinding firms and wool dealers. A thick party wall saved the latter, who occupy the front half of the building, from fire loss. The fire started on the seventh floor rear, occupied by the Estes Press, and worked Its way downward until at one time four upper floors were in flames, fanned by a brisk wind. S. The results obtained were in perfect agreement with Professor Pupin's mathematical theory, and they were so remarkable that their very recent publication in German scientific journals had produced quite a sensation among German scientists and in the German press. If a Man 8ms to a Tailor A Score of Trainmen Caught Under Mrs. Grant, whose maiden name was Julia Dent, was born In St. Louis lu 1826 and was the daughter of Frederick and Ellen Wreushall Dent. She was married to General, then Captain, Grant In 1848. During the civil war Mr*. Grant was with the general much of the time and remained as near as possible to him when he was campaigning. She saw her husband twice Inaugurated as president and accompanied him on his Journey around the Sorld. As mistress of the White House le gave liberally to all the charitable Institutions of the city. Four children were born to General and Mrs. Grant, three sons and one daughter, all of whom are living. Miss Nellie, the daughter, who became the wife of Algernon Sartoris in 1874, has lived In Washington with her mother for several years. Frederick Dent Grant, the oldest son, Is In the army, and two other sons, Jesse and Ulysses Sherman, live at San Diego, Cal. St. Louis, Dec. 15.—Eight defendants, former members of the house of delegates, will be called in Judge O'Nell Ryan's .division of the criminal court to answer to the charge of bribery in connection with the suburban bill. They are Charles Denny, John A. Sheridan, Edtbond Bertch, Emlle Hnrtman, Charles A. Gutke, J. J. Hannigan, Churles Kelly and Julius Lehmann. The attorneys for the defense have given notice that a change of venue will be asked for. If this shall be denied, the cases will be called immediately, and unless the defendants shall ask for a severance it will be a combination trial. The St. Louis Boodle Trials. Chicago, Dec. 15. — The tariff bill passed by the German relchstag, Chicago packers say, will deprive them of almost 25 per cent of their provision export trade, exclusive of fresh meats, and the packers already, are preparing to urge the United States government to take some action that will give them relief. William C. Evans of the foreign department of Armour & Co., who returned to Chicago from Berlin, where he had been In the interests of the house he represents, said the bill would deprive the American packers of nearly all their German export trade. Five Killed la Railroad Wreck, Kansas City, Mo., Dec. 15.—A special to the Star from Bucklln, Mo., says that a serious wreck occurred on the Hannibal and St Joseph railroad. A local freight was wrecked four miles west of Bucklln. A steam wrecker was sent to the scene from Brookfleld. The wrecked engine went through the bridge at Yellow creek. Five persons were killed, and Engineer Good was fatally Injured and half a dozen others seriously hurt. AU the victims were railroad employees. During recent years, since General Grant's death, Mrs. Grant has spent most of her winters in this city, living at 2111 Q street, while during the summer she usually lived nt Saratoga, Manchester-by-the-Sea and other popular resorts, until the last two summers, when she resided with her daughter, Mrs. Sartoris, at Coburg, Ont. She also made several visits to her sons In California during the last few years. She was of domestic temperament and devoted most of her time to her home and children. She cared little for society and always avoided public notice as much as possible. Her devotion to her husband was remarkable, and during the latter's unsuccessful years before the civil war and when his fortune was swept away shortly before his death Mrs. Grant always bore herself bravely and was an inspiration to him. Commencing Nov. 13, the Washington and Southwestern Limited, composed of Pullman drawing room, sleeping, observation-library, club and dining cars, operated dally between New York. Philadelphia and New Orleans, via the Pennsylvania railroad and the Southern Railway, leaving Pniladelphia At 6.55 p. m.. In addition will carry a special Sunset Limited annex Pullman drawing room compartment sleeping car, to connect with the Sunset Limited, which will be operated dally this season between New Orleans, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Many Soldiers Drowned. Xmas Values Colon, Colombia, via Galveston, Tex., Dec. 15.—Advices from Barranqullla confirm the report of the total wreck of the steamer Bogota in the Magdalena river recently near El Banco.
