Most of the country which I have seen is a succession of exquisitely beautiful landscapes, and it it perfectly easy to understand how an Irishman should be ardeatly attached to his native land. Jji O R E S T Corner Wyoming Avenue and Spruce St., HOUSE, - ; Next Door to the Post Office, PITTSTON, PA. CORNER OF MAIN AND. WILLIAM STS. " I am old-fashioned enough to think that the domestic life of woman is their best life, and that home is woman's most important and commanding place. For home is the center of the world. It holds the world in possibility.— From it the world proceeds; through it the world'continues ; in it the world repose. It is the only truly conaeorated place, the one divine institution. The great sacraments of birth, marriage, and cUatU are celebrated there. Every man 4s borp of a mother; and mother is a woman. Every man attains digni-1 ty as tho head of a household,! but the administrator and soul 6f the household is a woman. Whatever work woman may be callad to do, their best work is still done here. Whatever education they may acquire; the noblest results of it will ultimately show themselves here. But the actual coaditiou of woman at home is anyting but satisfactory, and in many respects is such as to cause serious concern to those who hope to see women doing themselves lull justice. Multitudes of noble girls, with fine capacities, admirable asperations and excellent purposes, get up in the morning simply because the sun does, and wear, wearily through the day, unable to give a good reason for their existence. The case of such women is peculiarly hard. A protest against this state of things comes from the best quarters; and it a protest that should be listened to. How shall it be answered? Something may be done to make domestic lise more attractive by household games, readeng circles, musical and dramatic entertainments. But this ia not enough. In this country,'usefulness, and. usefulness alone, vindicates itself. Nothing less than this will meet the demand of woman in our society.— Does marriage or the prospect of marriage stand in the way of this demand? Surely not; for " "while it 'ii true any woman maybe married, it is eqaally true that any wosaa'h may be unmarried. For every argument that may be urged against women's preparation for a career on tho ground that they may have husbands, an argument quite a* strong may be urged in favor of such preparation on the ground that they may not have. If there be a doubt on such a mat- At the termination of the circus performance a huge den, containing four ferocious lions, was dragged into the ring. Mr. Charles White wai then introduced, and fearlessly entered the cage and commenced performing with these brutes. The performance consists of the lions jumping through hoops, and over barriers, and eoncludeswith Mr. White feeding the animals raw meat out of his hands. The performance went smoothly along for several minutes when it waa observed that oue of the lions, a vicious looking fellow, seemed loth to act his part, and White commenced punishing him with his wb.tp.~- This eo enraged' the animal that be sprang upon White, felling him to the floor of the cage, setting his jaws into his body, as though he intended to eit the fellow up. It was vety soon noticed that a part of tho programmo was being enacted not advertised in the bills. Ang. 10. But why, it may be asked, should the people of such a country be obliged, by want, to seek a home in a strange land, 1 The causes at present operating to produce this result are very apparent.. It will be remembered ,that all tho lands in Ireland are in the bands of a low lands lords. It is utterly out of the question for tho poor to even think of owning lands in Ireland. They descend from the father to tho oldest son, and so on in succession. The rent required by these land owners would bo considered, in our country, enormous. Anything like good lanid rents for from ten to thirty dollars per acre, the rent for one year being enough to purchase an improved farm in many parts of the United' States, while the yield per acre is not more than with us. How is a man to support a family, after paying such a sum as this for rent ? The few who thus manage to keep soul and body together are obliged to live in the plainest manner possible. The question is simply how to keep tho soul in the body. Meat is out of tho question. UPPER .PIITSTON. ./ JAMES DOWLING, PaoMiiETetti Mar. T, 1861 541 yl May 17,186C.-?y G. B. ROMMEL * CO. Oatmeal ia also used, but who can pay twenty dollars por acre yearly for oatUnd ? Indian corn is not grown here; the climate is not warm enough. If an Irish family thus situated can, by any means, own a cow and save potatoes enough to live upon, this is as much as can be hoped for. Of lata years some Indian corn is imported from America, but this, of course, coats more in Ireland than where it is grown. But even this state of things, bad as it is, is not the worst of the case. There is a growing determination on the part of the land owners to refuse limited rentals. It is less troublesome to them to reni the whole estate to some stock grower than to rentxt in small parcels. T&e income is more certain, and more easily collected. So, as fast as ono miserable hut after another goes to pieces, they are cleared away, and tbe poor tenant given to understand tbat they must shift for themselves elsewhere. So, what wag once divided up into small parcels is now thrown together into a large pasture or meadow. It should be made to redound to the interest of woman's future, in this country prooarions. If it be still urged that the mere probability of marriage will be sufficient so to scatter women's braiu* as to make the requisite preparation unattainable, the prompt reply should be that the mere possibility of marriage should make such preparation imperative.— Can any thoughtful man or woman regrad it otherwise? The prospect of entering into the marriage relation is a prospect of entering on a career more definite than any which a young man has before him. More vital in the interests represented; more momentuous in the issues involved ; more sublime in the qualities engaged; more characteristic as taking up the elements of a sex, more influential as affecting men and women for time and for eternity. Regarding marriage as woman's lot, it is a lot that SO possibla amount of preparation will adequately meet, and that the smallest real preparation will do something toward anticipating. The responsibility of the wife may be very serious: but it becomes almost light as compared with the responsibility of the mother. Can that be forgotten ? Can it be remembered without suggesting thoughts which make the young man's prophecies of a career seem like dim abstraction? It may be a great thing to be a merchant, a financier, an inventor, an advocate, a judge, writer, or orator; but before these can exist there must be men. Before these can be what they should be, there must be healthy disciplined men; there must bo well bred youths, carefully instructed and faithfully trained children, infants lying on deep motherly bosoms atid sucking rich motherly milk; yes, more than that, ihh*Kng a pure, womanly spirit. It may be a-'fine thing for Women to have control oI their property, to help in making the laws they liwei ynder; but to be good mothers of men and wpqwn is the greatest thisg in all this world.— Do the qualifications for becoming se, appear - nt the instant of need ? Does the danoing master teach them, or the drawing master ? Poes the hairdresser put them into the head, or the French dressmaker fit them to the mind ? Does she get them from Mrs. Stephens's novels, or Mrs. Gore's ? The melancholy troth is, that the greater number of women are wholly incompetent to fulfill this most sawed and momentous office of woman's existence, and either leave it to be discharged by Nature, or allow it to be undischarged. This one has no health ; that one no knowledge; a third no economy ; a tourth no sagacity ; a filth no morale. Yet some of the most distinguished names in art and literature are names of marriod women, with children beside. Many teachers are married.— Married women are physicians, lecturers, preachers. The wives of clergymen all ovor the country do an immense amount of work outside of their families. It is not generally charged against them that their families are neglected. It should seem as if our people had more lei stare they should acquire more oulture; but experience does not seem to justify the expectation. The women oi the middle class among us have more leisure than their mothers and .grandmothers. It may be doubted if they are more intellectual. Their home life is easierit is not richer or more earnest. They read more, but they do not read so advantageously. A gOod deal of what is called domestic life is nothing better than domestic ltfelessness.— Fashion steps in to oooupy tho place which domestic industry occupied before. Hotel life and life in boarding-houses is becoming more popular because more easy, and the women who have no homes at all are the idlest. The question of wopnan's domestic life implicates the questions that concern her social aud public life.1' If she cannot sustain herself here, where the supreme dominion is fully conceded to her,and the administration is all in her hands, what encouragement is there to believe she can bear a worthy part in outside industries, make a fair contribution to the practical knowledge of the community, exercise civil rights with judgdment, or hold with discretion tho power of the ballot ? He was deposed by Iturbide; but in 1323 he effected the overthrow of his enemy. In 1S20 Guerrero made him Minister of War and commander-inchief, which he repaid by making Bustamente head of the army and overthrowing Guerrero.— Id 1833 he was chosen President, left the Federalist?, and became chief of tho Centralists.— Though a favorite with the army, which desired him to be mado Dictator, he was unpopular with tho nation, which suspeoted him of aim- " ing at tho imperial authority. A new revolt broke out in four provinces, and a manifesto was issued against him. May 11,1835, he defeated the Republicans near Zacateens with great slaughter, and became Dictator. In 1836 lie marched agaiist the revolutionists in Texas, stormed the Alamo, with great loss to himself, and, after the massacre at Goliad, marched to Gonzales. At San Jacinto he was defeated by Gon. In 1837 he visited the United States and returned home.— When the French attaeked Mexico,he hastened to arms, and repelled the foe at Vera Cruz, where, however, he lost a leg. During the wars between the Centralists and Federalists he led the former, and was from 1841 to 1844 virtual Dictator. In*1844 he was deposed and banished for ten years to Cuba. But it is as easy to see that the state of things just indicated diminishes the demand for labor. Ten thousand cattle can be fattened on an estate through the summer, to be consumed in London in the winter, without requiring a large amount of labor, A laboring man on a farm can earn one ahtlling per day. A hard week's work will no more than purchase a bushel and a half of potatoes, or a bushel of Indian meal. How is a poor family to got on with this? Where are clothing and fuel to come from? What are the Irish peasantry to do ? They must emigrate or starve. With very rare exceptions, one fails, in traveling over this country, by nature so beautiful, to 6ee the comfortable farm house, as in America. There is not one comfortable dwelling where there would be a hundred in America. The "country gentlemen" —the owners of these lands—such of them as live in Ireland, are scatterad at great distances from each other.— They live in fine stylo, have plenty of horses, and visit from one estate to another among themselves. Their children are sont away to be educated, their tons get positions in the army, and thus they manage to keep aloof from the great mass «t society around them. This state of things is depopulating Ireland, and will continuo to do so for a long ttmo to come. The decrease is now steadily fifty thousand per year. " Well," remarked the judge, scanning his subject closely from head to foot, 44 yours is a singular case ; yet I think it is easily accounted for. I am reminded by it of a little story. A colored man, with a loaf of bread and flask of whisky, sat down to eat his humble meal by the bank of a clear stream. In brcalting his bread, some of the crumbs dropped into the water, and they were eagerly seized and eaten by the fish. That circumstance suggested to the darky the idea of dipping the bread into the whisky and iecding it to them. He tried it It worked well. Some of the fish ate of it, became drunk, and floated helpless ou the water. In this way he easily caught a great number. But in the stream was a large fish very unlike the rest It partook freely of the bread and whisky, but with no perceptible effect It was shy of every effort of Hhe darkey to take it. He resolved to have it at all hazards, that he might learn its name and nature. He procured a net, caught it, carried it to a colored neighbor, and asked his opinion in the matter. The other surveyed the wonder a moment, and then said: QIIANGB OF FIRM ! Pittston, June 6, ANIIISER & STARK, Wholesale and Retail Dealers in R 0 C E R I E PROVISIONS, SALT MEATS, Ac.
