C., Dec. 3.—The steamer Kaga Maru, which has Just arrived from the orient, brought news of an attempt on the life of the emperor of Japan when the imperial train was at Otaka, a station west of Hiroshima, en route to the scene of the maneuvers of Kinshln. A number of conspirators had gone there and arranged to blow up the emperor's train, but the police authorities learned of the plot, and the would be dynamiters fled. The imperial train did not proceed until an engine had been sent over the line to test the safety of the track. The plotters were not captured. Mr. Joclielson and his party collected 15,000 specimens, nearly all of which have been received at the museum, although one shipment is yet in transit, and several cases await action by the customs authorities. The collection which will be installed as a result of the expedition will, it is thought, excel that of any other museum in the world. London, Dec. 3.—All of the evening newspapers make President Roosevelt's message the text of their leading editorials. The St. James Gazette says: "It is a dignified and elevated disquisition and from a general point of view does no discredit to the President's many and inspiring exhortations to hlB "countrymen." The Westminster Gazette, says: "The message .presents us with a picture of a good man struggling with disillusionment much more subdued than in his recent speech. The Interests which had taken great alarm at the President's supposed designs are carefully reassured." He has been seen in public places and lias been apparently acting as he pleases. If any trial is taking place. It must be secret. Not one of the many persons who say they were eyewitnesses of the shooting has been summoned to give testimony. Sunday morning Mrs. Stickler was the first at the pump. It was then nearly 8 o'clock and fully light. As she drew a bucket of water she observed a green powder on the chain. She drew a bucketful of water and found that a scum of the green stuff formed on the surface when the water was still. Dr. Emerick pronounced the powder to be paris green. He was convinced that at least a pound of the poison had been put Into the well.
