Owens of Lowell and J. Q. B. Jacques of Salem. BRENNAN f ROBERTS, Washington, Dec. 1.—Precisely at noon today, the second session of the Fifty-seventh Congress was called to order. President pro tem Frye was In the chair in the Senate chamber, while Speaker Henderson wielded the gavel in the House. Long before the hour set for the opening, the public galleries yere filled and the corridors surrounding them crowded. Qn the floor, however, there were many vacant seats on both sides. There were more vacancies in the House than In the Senate. Nearly all of the leaders were In attendance, but many of the others were content to remain away from the preliminaries. The constabulary in the Zambales province reports a repulsive incident of cruelty perpetrated by ladrones. Several columns of constabulary had been chasing the ladrones with the assistance of friendly natives. Five of the frlendlies straggled from the column and were captured by ladrones, who amputated the tongue and gouged out the eyes of one friendly and then sent him back to the constabulary. Little Jennie died Friday, and an autopsy revealed that her death was due to poison. After the funeral Mrs. Whitten was arrested, charged with administering the poison to her daughter. The new members elected to fill vacancies which occurred during the recess of Congress were then sworn in. Congressman of Ohio, offered a resolution Questioning the title of Carter Glasa, of Virginia, a newly-elected member, to a seat, and raising the question whether the negroes of Virginia had not been unlawfully deprived of the franchise. The resolution was referred to committee on elections No. 1, of which Mr. Taylor is chairman. The House adjourned at .12.50 p. m., out of respect to the memory of Representative Charles A. Russell, of Connecticut. Berlin, Dec. 1.—The British government is telegraphing to all the German ports inn king inquiries concerning a number of Boer gold bars worth $650,- 000 which, It is supposed, have been brought to this country from South Africa within the past fortnight. The bars are destined for former President Kruger and Dr. Leyds and, It is presumed, had been concealed In the northern Transvaal. Great Britain will endeavor to legally attach the gold if it can be located on the ground that she Is entitled to all the assets of the Transvaal because she has assumed responsibility for the debts of that country, Including the bondB issued prior to the war. Blondin and' his wife roomed at 43 Green street, this city, and the latter was last seen alive by the landlady, Mrs. Halltgan, on April 27, 1901. On June 10 her headless body was found in the woods in Chelmsford, and a few days later the head was found In a small creek a quarter of a mile away. Frequently he recounts cases of desertion and panic among his own men whrth his entreaties and sjamboking were all of no avail. During most of this time Blondin was quietly at work in a factory in White Plains. N. Y., and it was not until Feb. 25 of this year that he was arrested in New York, where he had gone from White Plains to make application for a fireman's license. He returned after a brief absence and, unlocking the door, glanced toward the bed where Mrs. Whltten was upparently sleeping when he left her. 'He saw her hanging to the bedpost. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Killed br Safe Robbers. Laporte, Ind., Dec. 1.—Wesley Reynolds, aged sixteen, employed as a clerk in the bank at Westville, in this county, was shot and killed by robbers, who had broken into the place and were about to blow open the safe. The men escaped in a stolen rig. Adolph Koontz on passing the building discovered a broken window and called Reynolds, but received no response. He reported the circumstance to E. S. Smith, owner of the bank, who investigated, finding his clerk dead in a pool of blood on the floor. At his side were an empty revolver and another partially empty. Examination showed evidences of a desperate battle. More than twenty shots had been exchanged. From the trail of blood left by the robbers it is believed onexof the men was wounded. The rig in which they escaped was abandoned six miles south of Westville. Sheriff Small and a posse of men are scouring the country for the men. Chicago, Dec. 1.—Chicago is to have a hospital wherein congenital hip dislocation and other deformities will be treated according to- Professor Adolf Loreuz's methods. Dr. Frederick Mueller, Dr. Lorenz's assistant, who came to America with the Vienna surgeon, lias made the announcement. The hospital is the direct result of Dr. Lorenz's visit to Chicago to treat the little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Ogden Armour. Mr. Armour is interested In the project, and it is said he will give the institution financial support. Savannah, Ga., Dec. 1.—John Elliott Ward, president of the convention of 1850 that nominated James Buchanan for president of the United States, has died at Dorchester, Go., his birthplace, aged eighty-eight years. Mr. Ward was district attorney of Georgia in 1838 and mayor of Savannah in 1854. In 1848 he was appointed by President Buchanan as minister to China, in which position he served until the breaking out of the civil war, when he resigned and returned to Savannah. Steel Portsmouth, Va., Dec. 1.—Responsibility for the explosion on the battleship Texas is attributed to the gun crew by the chief electrician of the Norfolk navy yard. He said that the accident was due to an oversight of the crew while working the left hand "flush" valves of the guns. These valves, he said, were screwed down only two-thirds flush when the Texas left the but the crew screwed thein down beyond "full flush." He explained that the result was the refusal of the valves to work when the guns were fired, causing the explosion. Detroit, Mich.. Dec. 1.—A special to the Free Press from Put-In-Bay, O., says that the steam barge D. F. Rose, owned by L. B. Parker of Marine City, Mich., and the barge Mosher, owned by Captain David Hutchinson of Port Huron, have struck Starve island reef, and it is feared that both vessels will be a total loss. The Rose was beached on the south shore of Put-In-Bay, and the Mosher lies on a reef with her back broken. The Mosher is not Insured. Tito Lake Vessels Lout, Pittsburg, Dec. 1.—Lizzie Wilson, aged 35, proprietress of a house on Colwell street, was shot and instantly killed early this morning by a man as yet unknown to the police. Mary Hammer, aged 24 years, a companion of Mts. Wilson, was shot in the arm. The murderer escaped In his underclothing, and 4* anpposed to be hiding somewhere In the neighborhood of the crime. Miss Hammer admits knowing the murderer, but declines to give his name or state the lause of the tragedy. Body Saved From DiiMCtori. Louisville, Ky., Dec. 1.—The body of Nathan B. Walker, an ex-member of the Lotos and Union League clubs of New York, who was deserted "in his adversity and died a pauper in the Louisville City hospital, has been rescued by Henry Wutterson from the deadhouse of the medical college after a strenuous effort and buried in the Courier Journal's lot in Cave Hill. Jf., Dec. 1.—Edwin Hicks, United Stutes referee itf bankruptcy for Ontario county, has died at his home in this village, aged seventytwo. Mr. Hicks was district attorney of Ontario county from 1863 to 1872 and state senator from the Ontario Seneca-Yates district in 1877 and 1878. President pro tem Frye was In the chair in the Senate chamber, while Speaker Henderson wielded the gavel in the House. Long before the hour set for the opening, the public galleries yere filled and the corridors surrounding them crowded. Qn the floor, however, there were many vacant seats on both sides. There were more vacancies in the House than In the Senate. Nearly all of the leaders were In attendance, but many of the others were content to remain away from the preliminaries. The constabulary in the Zambales province reports a repulsive incident of cruelty perpetrated by ladrones. Several columns of constabulary had been chasing the ladrones with the assistance of friendly natives. The new members elected to fill vacancies which occurred during the recess of Congress were then sworn in. Congressman of Ohio, offered a resolution Questioning the title of Carter Glasa, of Virginia, a newly-elected member, to a seat, and raising the question whether the negroes of Virginia had not been unlawfully deprived of the franchise. The resolution was referred to committee on elections No. 1, of which Mr. Taylor is chairman. The House adjourned at .12.50 p. m., out of respect to the memory of Representative Charles A. Russell, of Connecticut. Berlin, Dec. 1.—The British government is telegraphing to all the German ports inn king inquiries concerning a number of Boer gold bars worth $650,- 000 which, It is supposed, have been brought to this country from South Africa within the past fortnight. The bars are destined for former President Kruger and Dr. Leyds and, It is presumed, had been concealed In the northern Transvaal. Great Britain will endeavor to legally attach the gold if it can be located on the ground that she Is entitled to all the assets of the Transvaal because she has assumed responsibility for the debts of that country, Including the bondB issued prior to the war. Blondin and' his wife roomed at 43 Green street, this city, and the latter was last seen alive by the landlady, Mrs. Halltgan, on April 27, 1901. On June 10 her headless body was found in the woods in Chelmsford, and a few days later the head was found In a small creek a quarter of a mile away. Frequently he recounts cases of desertion and panic among his own men whrth his entreaties and sjamboking were all of no avail. De Wet pays a tribute to General Cronje for his bravery, but declares he lost at Paardeberg only on account of his fatal obstinacy to leave the laager, as he was advised to do by General Botha and by the writer himself. v Swooned Ht Parting. Search was at once made for Blondin, and it was ascertained that he had left the city, and for months the officers were engaged In traveling through the eastern and middle states and Canada running down all sorts of alleged clews, only to be disappointed when they had found the suspect. During most of this time Blondin was quietly at work in a factory in White Plains. N. Y., and it was not until Feb. 25 of this year that he was arrested in New York, where he had gone from White Plains to make application for a fireman's license. He returned after a brief absence and, unlocking the door, glanced toward the bed where Mrs. Whltten was upparently sleeping when he left her. 'He saw her hanging to the bedpost. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Killed br Safe Robbers. Laporte, Ind., Dec. 1.—Wesley Reynolds, aged sixteen, employed as a clerk in the bank at Westville, in this county, was shot and killed by robbers, who had broken into the place and were about to blow open the safe. The men escaped in a stolen rig. Adolph Koontz on passing the building discovered a broken window and called Reynolds, but received no response. He reported the circumstance to E. S. Smith, owner of the bank, who investigated, finding his clerk dead in a pool of blood on the floor. At his side were an empty revolver and another partially empty. Examination showed evidences of a desperate battle. More than twenty shots had been exchanged. From the trail of blood left by the robbers it is believed onexof the men was wounded. The rig in which they escaped was abandoned six miles south of Westville. Sheriff Small and a posse of men are scouring the country for the men. Savannah, Ga., Dec. 1.—John Elliott Ward, president of the convention of 1850 that nominated James Buchanan for president of the United States, has died at Dorchester, Go., his birthplace, aged eighty-eight years. Mr. Ward was district attorney of Georgia in 1838 and mayor of Savannah in 1854. In 1848 he was appointed by President Buchanan as minister to China, in which position he served until the breaking out of the civil war, when he resigned and returned to Savannah. These valves, he said, were screwed down only two-thirds flush when the Texas left the but the crew screwed thein down beyond "full flush." He explained that the result was the refusal of the valves to work when the guns were fired, causing the explosion. Parker of Marine City, Mich., and the barge Mosher, owned by Captain David Hutchinson of Port Huron, have struck Starve island reef, and it is feared that both vessels will be a total loss. The Rose was beached on the south shore of Put-In-Bay, and the Mosher lies on a reef with her back broken. The Mosher is not Insured. Tito Lake Vessels Lout, Pittsburg, Dec. 1.—Lizzie Wilson, aged 35, proprietress of a house on Colwell street, was shot and instantly killed early this morning by a man as yet unknown to the police. Mary Hammer, aged 24 years, a companion of Mts. Wilson, was shot in the arm. The murderer escaped In his underclothing, and 4* anpposed to be hiding somewhere In the neighborhood of the crime.
