Casey, a Rochester contractor. They had started a heading at a new level and had loaded up a blast which was to bo discharged. After loading they walked back about 225 feet, between the heading and the shaft at Twenty-fourth street. Suddenly, according to the story told lDy the survivors, they felt giddiness and nausea, and before they could reach the slmft four of the men fell to the floor of the tunnel, over which a considerable stream of water was flowing. The others, becoming thoroughly alarmed, pushed ahead to the shaft. Foreman Mulroy was the first to reach the surface, a distance of flfty feet, and gave the alarm. George Rhodes was ascending in the bucket when he was overcome by the noxious gas and fell from the bucket to the bottom of the shaft. He died from the result of his injarles and suffocation. Ralph Evans, of Wilkesbarre, who fell into a sump containing hot water at the Dorrance mine yesterday, died today in the Wilkesbarre city hospital People's Store, Waidlck, N. J., Nov. 1.—Four masked men entered the Erie railroad station at Undercllff just before dawn thlg morning, and, after holding up Station Agent Balliet, with revolvers, proceeded to rob the place. The robbers secured a watch and a small sum of money. Memphis, Tenn., Nov. 1.—Cresceus, the great son of Robert McGregor, made good his claim to championship honors at the Driving park in a remarkable exhibition of speed and stamina. The horse was sent against the world's two mile trotting rccord of 4:U8ti, held by Onward Silver, and completed the circuit twice without n break in 4:17 flat, clipping eleven and a quarter seconds off the former record. After nearly four years' Imprisonment and after having once been sentenced to death Molineux then told his story in detail for the lirst time to a jury, denying that he sent the poison package to Harry S. The funeral of the late John Joyce took place this afternoon from the family home on Green street, Upper Pittston. Interment was made in St. Mary's cemetery, Upper Pittston. Five Injured in Collision of Trains. .GO Worcester, Mass., Nov. 1.—A rearend collision occurred at 1 o'clock this morning oh one of the railroads near this city, one freight train crashing Into another one. The tunnel trunk sewer recently struck u peculiar flow of water, boring a vein of rock from which water impregnated with sulphur flowed in such large streams that the level at which the tunnel was being built was abandoned and one ten feet higher taken. J., Nov. 1.—Thomas Donnelly, aged 29 years, a bartender at Vertel's saloon, on Market street, this city, was shot and instantly killed this morning by a tramp known as "Baltimore Blackie." The detectives say he is implicated equally In the grave robbing business with ltufus Cantrell, Sam Martin and ytlier colored ghouls now in jail. McEndree confessed that he had been in the graveyard robbing business. When asked how muny times lie had been out with a gang, he said, "Oh, I've made about twenty trips." He said he got bodies from different cemeteries about Indianapolis and disposed of them at three of the local colleges. Bubonic Plague Record. Terrible Cholera Epidemic in Egypt. Washington, Nov. 1.—ThirtyUix cases of bubonic plague occurred during the past ten months at San Francisco, and every one of them resulted fatally. Washington, Nov. 1.—Hubbard T. Smith, acting United States consul general at Cairo, Egypt, cables tue State Department as follows: "Cairo, Nov. 1.—Since Oct. 25 there have been 225 cases of cholera and 212 deaths in all Egypt." The trial list for the first week of the next term of criminal court, which opens on Nov. 10, has been prepared. The trial of John Smith, Ignatz Shukis and Mike Yushzulis, charged with murder, is set down for the first day. The ease of James Sweeney, charged with murder, will be opened on Wednesday, the 12th. Casey, a Rochester contractor. They had started a heading at a new level and had loaded up a blast which was to bo discharged. After loading they walked back about 225 feet, between the heading and the shaft at Twenty-fourth street. Suddenly, according to the story told lDy the survivors, they felt giddiness and nausea, and before they could reach the slmft four of the men fell to the floor of the tunnel, over which a considerable stream of water was flowing. The others, becoming thoroughly alarmed, pushed ahead to the shaft. Foreman Mulroy was the first to reach the surface, a distance of flfty feet, and gave the alarm. George Rhodes was ascending in the bucket when he was overcome by the noxious gas and fell from the bucket to the bottom of the shaft. He died from the result of his injarles and suffocation.
