The gray locks which fell back over the shoulders of the aged priest and his mild but care-worn features told too plainly that hit was no life of ease. A price was set on his head, and often had the strong arm of Donal saved him from the merciless clutches of the Sassanacb. His lite was mostly spent on the mountain or in the dark woods at its base, fthence he made his stolen visits to the cabin of the dying peasant to prepare his departing spirit for a better world. On Sundays the people may be seen in twos and threes, the less to attract attention, hastening to an appointed spot on the mountain ; and there, where in happier times St. Hilary made his pilgrimage from Clonmeen Abbey and ipent the forty days of Ant in prayer and fasting, Father Murphy offered the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass in stealth, with sentinels placed on different parts of the hill around to warn him of the approach of the bloodhounds of the law who were ever on his track. There the pious peasantry knelt with uncovered heads before the Creator of heaven and earth ; there they forgot their sorrows and felt that there waa still a Providence who would order everything for the best. "Fair lady," he began," chance has at length given me an opportunity of seeing one of whose beauty and accomplishment* I have oftentimes heard so much. SPERLING, "Sir," sbe replied," I am happier in yonder cave—dark though it be and lonely my life in it—as the wife of Donal 0*lteeffe, than I should be as the bride of the richest lord or the owner of the grandest palace in Munster." BALTIMORE, Md. Before the rebellion of 1841 all Ibe country bounding the north side of the Blackwater, from Mallow to the Ford of Cleada, belonged to the O'Keeffes. Their principal stronghold lay at Dromagh, and though now in ruins, enough still remains to give us an idea of the magnificent style in which it was bnilt and the power of that noble sect who claimed it as their own. The aged priest and Donal entered the care together. They had not long to wait ere Mauried and two of her dearest companions entered also, and there in that silent cave the marriage ceremony was performed, and Mauried Ni Cealladh became the bride of Donal O'Keeffe. "May heaven pour its choicest blessings on you, and may the God of Battles yet vanquish the enemies of our country and bring peace and happiness to her children," said Father Murphy, his voice trembling with emotipn, ere he bad risen from his knees. A fervent "Amen" was the response of the little group around. The venerable soldier of the cross, having blest them again and again, took his departure. He has other duties to attend to, and will not rest his weary limbs before sunrise to morrow. Donal took his young bride to the chamber he had prepared for her reception. He led her along the dark passages into the cave, till at length they came to a small streamlet which made its way through a natural tunnel in the rock before them. Over this he lifted her in his arms, and after going around some immense pillars ol rock at the oth6rside, they came to a low arch* way through which they entered. " Mauried, here is our home," exclaimed Donal. As soon as the torch he carried in his hand had lit up the interior of the apartment Mauried started back in amazement. She had expected to find some dark chambcr lined with damp, rocky walls like those she had passed, but here was an apartment fitted up with all the elegance one could desire. The walls, ceilling and floorseem. ed to be composed of flakes of the finest wool, and Mauried again and again pressed her band against them before she could acknowledge to herself that they were really stone. And if nature had fitted this chamber of her own to perfection, art had also contributed its share.— Here were soft couches, handsome cushioned seats, a beautifully finished table, and on one side stood a largo oak chest filled with the costliest dresses. Mauried now turned towards home, and Gordon, with a courteous bow, took another direction, muttering, as he did so, "She'll think differently by-and-by." I will not attempt to describe the cunning flatteries and devilish sophistry by which Gordon strove to win the affiections of Mauried.— Every evening he contrived to meet her, and such good use did be make of his time that sbe at length listened without anger to his addresses. He told her he loved her; that be was the. owner of a grand castle near Fermoy ; 'that he would return there after the capture of Donal O'Keeffe and make her his bride. He described all the pleasures that awaited her in her new home, and pushed his suit withrall the ardor of one who has in the success of bis scheme the gratification, at the same lime, of pride, passion and revenge. B . W A It NEK, Donal O'Keeffe, by the death of his father, was chief of his clan at an early age. He inherited all the daring and nobleheartedness of his race D and scarcely had the war-shout of Tir-Owen reached the flower-decked vales of Duhallow ere young O'Keeffe left behind him the glens of his childhood and the halls of his ancestors, and went forth with all the pride and hope of a patriot soldier to do battle for his native land. For seven years did he toil and dare and struggle 'neath his country's flag, till the fatal field of Knock-na-Gall, almost within sight of his own home, shattered to pieces every hope that still remained for Ireland. He returned to Dromagh and found it in ruins, his people slain or scattered, hjg land claimed by strangers, and he without a home, a clan, or country to call his own. CARD! Some days afterwerds, as Donal was returning from the glens at the southern side of the mountain, he chanced to come along the side of an old cumar that time and winrty floods had worn away. The sun was just setting beyond the western hills, and Bonal paused as he gazed on the beautiful valley beneath. From the north the Alio wended its way by the massive towers of the McCarha, and with the ruddy beams of the setting sun calmly resting on its lucid breast, united with tho Black-water.— Nearer again he got a glimpse of the glen river as it circled around the we.stern side of the hil 1 and danced over the rugged rocks that strove in vain to bar its downward course. The Blackwater, like an. immense serpent, twisted itself along the valley. Far away to the west he could see its glittering folds among the trees; he listened to its low, lonely murmur as it passed by the ruined shrine of 8t. Hilary and the dismantled towers of the O'Callagha, and then glided away through the level fields, till at length it became lost to hi* view in ttfe wooded glens near Mallow. The only sounds that broke on his ear were the murmur of the streamlet that dashed through the old cunar and an occassional "caw, caw" from a flock of rooks that wended their way westwards far above his bead. "What a beautiful scene !" he exclaimed. "How grand the old abbey and castle appear, even in ruins ! The ivy will yet grow up beside them and hide them from the gaze of man, clasp them fondly round, and protect them from the effects of decaying time itself. They will yet reflect the last rays of the setting sun when the enemies of our country are low in the earth and remembered but to be cursed. And mayhap in after days this ill-fated land shall be free ; then her children may restore Cloneen Abbiy, saints make it their home, and another St. Hilary give thanks to heaven from the mountain-top above me.— When peace And freedom again visit Duhallow, will its people ever think of Donal O'Keeffe 7" They are also dealing in HIDES SHEEP SKINS, and FUR"4, for which they will at all times pay the Weeks and months passed a way and still Donal and Mauried lived happily together. Donal soon became so troublesome to the new settlers of Duhallow, that 'twas found necessary to station a lew companies of soldiers at Goitmore. This force was placed under the command ot a Captain Gordon, who earned his commission and acquired some property more by his cunning in the camp than prowess In the field.* He determined by force or stratagem to capture the oatlaw or hunt him from hjj hiding-place. On one occasion he and his men pursued Donal from Kan'urk. He led them across the couutry, through Bana, and down to Kippagh; then turning suddenly towards the riyer he plunged in, gained the opposite bank in safety, and was soon secure within the entrance of his cave. " Follow him," shouted Gordon, as he and a few of his foremost men plunged into the water, and without pausing, rushed into the cave. They soon came to a narrow opening which would admit of only one to crawl in at the time.. Nothing daunted, however, the foremost began to enter, but ere he had pulled himself half way through he was met by the point of Donal's sword, snd his lifeless body blocked the passage on the rest. His comrades drew him out, and, baffled and foaming with rage, Gordon rushed up and down like a madman. At length he paused, and with a fearful oath exclaimed: "By , we'll smoke him out." Having no idea of the extent of the cave, he directed his men to collect bundles of faggots and pile them up in the entrance. As soon as a sufficient number was procured the entire was set on fire. Large volumes of smoke curled up and around the rocks and rose high into the air, while the soldiers waited with fiendish glee the effect of their work. As soon as thi immense pile had becoiuo reduced to a heap of glowing ashes, Gordon ordered another of his men to enter and drag the " damned rebel's carcass out." The soldier picked his way across the red cinders and soon came to the narrow opening where his comrade met death a short time before. adjoining the Butler House, where he will be prepared at all times to supply families and parties with Bread Biscuit, Cakes and Pics, of all kind, on short notice. BALTIMORE, Md. Before the rebellion of 1841 all Ibe country bounding the north side of the Blackwater, from Mallow to the Ford of Cleada, belonged to the O'Keeffes. CARD! He collected th9 scattered remnants of his clan and for years disputed with the stranger his title to the Blackw&ter .side, and at length fell, as a brave man ought, in the midst of his country's foes. 3d. " Being a Smooth Surface," they do 'not- gather soot as a brick chimney does, and from their peculiar construction, are much more safe from fire.
