The case Is a familiar one to the public. Nellie Cropsey, n beautiful young white girl, disappeared at night from her home In Elizabeth City. She had been last seen with Jim Wilcox, a young man and at one time her sweetheart. Suspicion fell on him, but he was not arrested. Thirty-seven days afterward her body was found in the Pnsquotauk river, and Wilcox was arrested. He was tried and sentenced to be hanged. Y., Oct. 1.—When Senator Hill came into the Democratic State convention this morning he was greeted with an outburst of enthusiasm that lasted for fully five minutes. The delegates stamped their feet, cheered, howled and made every possible kind if noise. Hill took his seat with the Albany delegation. The convention was called to order by Chair man Stanchfleld. and the report of the committee on credentials was at once called for. The convention was thrown into an uproar when both contestants from| the Ninth district of New York city, Dsvety and Goodwin, were rejected by a vote of the convention. In granting n new trial the supreme court says the evidence was entirely circumstantial; that the jury does not seem to have given the necessary cautious and vigilant attention to the evidence or to the presentation of the prisoner's case by counsel. It says that the conduct of the spectators In and about the court were sufficient to prejudice the jury. "No such demonstrations," reads the opinion, "were ever witnessed In our state before." The case Is a familiar one to the public. Nellie Cropsey, n beautiful young white girl, disappeared at night from her home In Elizabeth City. She had been last seen with Jim Wilcox, a young man and at one time her sweetheart. Suspicion fell on him, but he was not arrested. Thirty-seven days afterward her body was found in the Pnsquotauk river, and Wilcox was arrested. He was tried and sentenced to be hanged. The delegates stamped their feet, cheered, howled and made every possible kind if noise. Hill took his seat with the Albany delegation. The convention was called to order by Chair man Stanchfleld. and the report of the committee on credentials was at once called for. The convention was thrown into an uproar when both contestants from| the Ninth district of New York city, Dsvety and Goodwin, were rejected by a vote of the convention. In granting n new trial the supreme court says the evidence was entirely circumstantial; that the jury does not seem to have given the necessary cautious and vigilant attention to the evidence or to the presentation of the prisoner's case by counsel. It says that the conduct of the spectators In and about the court were sufficient to prejudice the jury. "No such demonstrations," reads the opinion, "were ever witnessed In our state before."
