Dr. Armitage has an intense, earnest nature; bis life is fall of enthusiasm and fervor. Inheriting the fominine cast of intellect, his intuitive knowledge of truth flashes upon him instantly; his mind is full of facts and relations, which are always on hand ; and though his language is only fairly indicated, yet this peculiar, intuitive character of his intellect eaables him to bring bis ideas clearly forth with only * moderate amount of colloquial talent. Firmness is large; he is positive, and strongly inclined to take a position of independence and authority. As a preacher he would be more ethical in hii teachings than subservient, more inclined t«j instruct people how to do justly and love mercy than to walk humbly. Dogmatic theology is no part of his creed. He is a leader, no) a follower of men ; he would make innorationi as a reformer, yet would not be averse to adopting unpopular truth*. Whatever Dr. Aruitaga thinks to be a duty, he performs for the earnest love of it, with a spirit of philanthropy and love for his fellow.men which gives him great influence in swaying the minds aac molding the character of others. New Orleans, July 9.—The Times this evening publishes an extra containing a ranch ero letter from San Luis Potosi, stating that at six o'clock on the morning of the 19th the troops of Escobedo formed & short distance from the city for the execution of Maximilian and his Generals, the people of Queretaro flocking by thousands to see the closing scenes in the life of the men they loved. As the clock strikes 1, the bells toll and announce that the prisoners have loft their prisons for the last time, and are on their way to their execution. After a few moments they appear, drawn in carriages and a large guard around them, the'Emperor first, Miramon next, and Mejia last. As they near the place of execution, convulsive throbs break from the crowd. The carriages stop, and the prisoners get out. Among the conclave you can hardly see a dry eye. Tokens of dissatisfaction aro manifested. Maximilian, on alighting, is saluted by the people. -In an easy and graceful manner, and with an elastic step, ho marched to the fatal spot. The prisoners were dressed in a plain manner. They were not bound nor blindfolded. In taking his position the Emperor spoke in a clear and firm inannor, and with nothing of bravado. He seemed to feel his situation, and said when he was first waited upon at homo by the deputation from Mexico who came with credentials offering him the 'Government of the country, he refused. At a subsequent meeting, the proposition was again presented, and he replied that if convinced that the majority thought that it was to their interest to place him at the head of the Government, he might consent. Another deputation waited "Yes, yes," said some of tho sailors round him, "it is disgraceful to us all that the little cabin boy should set us an example of courage; and it would be a sad thing if the child should die for old men like we, who have lived our time. Some years ago the Mississippi River was famous for its "floating palaces," as the large steamers plying between New Orleans and the ports above were called. Now tho railroads have driven nearly all the 'fine boats off the river, and left the Held to tho freight boats, whose accomodations for passengers aro by no means'palatial. The former class of steamers were in many respects delightful, but they never ccased to be objects of dread to timid people for if the racing, which was on that steam reduced to a system, did not result in the loss of tho boat, there was Buro to be one or more encounters between the more lawless portion of the travellers, in which pistol bullets would fly rather too thick for the comfort oi steady-going people. Tho cause of such disturbance was generally a quariol over the gaming table. The regulation of the boats usually required that all such amusements should be conducted in a saloon provided lor that purpose in the " Texas," " office qabiu," situated on the hurricane dock, but tho sporting gentlemen woro by no means careful to observe this rule, and the gaming was most commonly carried on at the dining table, in tho main saloon of the steamer, to the great annoyance of two-thirds of those on the board. v Tlie undersigned having just returned from ike head of market with one of the most extensive stocks of merchandise ever offered to the people of Luzerne County, would respectfully announce in a few words, to their friends and the public in general, that thelf'purchases have oecn made with a- yiew tQ the wants of the people, the miner amd laborer, as well as the clean uandeil gentleman,or fair lady. Many professional gamblers used to make these boats their home, traveling back and forth with them, fleecing all who were foolish and verdant onough to fall into their clutdhes. So well, indeed, was the system managed that the various members seemed to have their different steamers marked out for them by common consent, so that no one would trespass upon the of the other. Of course theso men were warm friends of the officers of the boat, who were either fpo sincere in their friendship to put a stop to the practice, or too much afraid of the gamblers to care to provdke a quarrel with then, for in those days it was a common affair for such men to resent any fancied insult with a pistol shot. One of the moat remarkable men of this class, was named Daniel Sturdivant, a Frenchman, the son of a broken down scion of nobility who had sfettlad in New Orleans before the transfer of Louisiana to United States. (CELEBRATED XX # XXXX ALES, THE SAILOR BOY OF HARVE. JOEL BRENTON, UNRIVALLED C11KAM ALES, A French brig was returning from Toulon to Havre, with a rich cargo and numerous passengers. Off the coast of Bretagne,' it was overtaken by a sudden and violent storm. After Miramon ceased speaking, the guard was drawn up. The prisoners were standing facing them. The Emperor called the sergeant, and drawing from his pocket a handful of twenty dollar pieces, he gave them to him, and requested that after his death he would divide them lirith his company, asking as a favor that he would aim his bullet at his heart. The officers gave the signal, the volley was fired, and the prisoners lay stretched on the ground. The Emperor was not quite dead. There was considerable quivering of the muscles. Five balls had entered his breast. Two soldiers were then catled out, who shot him in the side. Miramon and Mej ia were killed by the first volley. Each of the four balls entered in the breast. A sheet was thrown over the Emperor by the doctor, who was to embalm his body. The bodies were then taken by their respective friends, and the troops moved back to their quarters, while thousands remained, kept by a supernatural agency. The precepts of a pious mother who was a member of the Methodist persuasion mado a deep impression upon his mind; and at the extermely early age of fifteen we find him licensed to exhort in the Methodist Church. Six months after ho was licensed to preach, and delivered his first discourse at Attercliffe Common, near Sheffield, with such marked success that it was the means of converting quite a number of his hearers. After three or four years of successful labor as a local preacher in England, his attention was turned toward the liberal institutions and the promising field of religious labor in the Unitod States. After coming to this country, he preached first in Suffolk Countrj, Ij. I.; then in Watervlict, Albany County, N. Y.. and next in the Garretson Station Methodist Episcopal church, Pearl St Albany, and subsequently in other places, inaugrating extensive and!extraorainary revivals, lie soon attained an eminent and inllucntial position in the Methodist Church. In 1839 having occasion to attend the ceremonial of baptism as performed in the Baptist Church, he was so deeply impressed that he commenced a series of careful investigations into the doctrinc, practicc and government of the Baptist Church, and after six months careful consideration he became fully persuaded that in that demomination he would find a more congenial religious atmosphere.
