Schwab, president of the United States Steel corporation, who sailed from New York Aug. 21 on the French liner La Lorraine, that Mr. Schwab worked extremely hnrd during the trip over and never gave himself live minutes leisure. Santos-Dumont, "but an aerial vessel, built to carry under the best conditions of security and comfort eight passengers of an average weight of seventy kilograms. I conceived the project some time ago as an answer to those who contend that an airship is only good for making a tour round the Eiffel tower, but of 110 practical utility for commerce or for war. New York, Aug. 20.—On account of a peculiar accident, the Nassau, a ferrylioat which piles between Long Island City and Wall street, has been out of service for two days. The accident befell one of the firemen on the boat, and almost cost him one of his arms! lie started to repair a pump which had got out'of order, lie had some trouble In getting his arm into the pump, but found the obstruction after ten minutes' work, lie then tried to pull out his arm, but to his horror found ho could not move it. The forearm had swollen and remained wedged In. The pump had'to be cut away to free the arm. After hard work the chilled steel cylinder was cut In two wedges, driven into the shell, forced it apart. Aug. 21).—One of the fiercest storms witnessed here in many years has been experienced Great damage was done by lightning in this city and county for several miles around. Several barns were struck here and nt Otisville and burned, together with tlieir blooded stock. At Greenleaf's hotel, in Otisville, lightning caused a panic, the hotel being filled with people attending the coaching parade and who had sought shelter from the storm. The lightning came in over the three telephone wires leading into the hotel. Women and children screamed, and several fainted. It is reported that one person felPdead near Otisville from fright. Sheriff Can't Oct Di'imllftt, Mangan's Evans Bros. Sheriff Daniel of Fayette county says lie is powerless to repress disorder, and property and life are in constant danger. Nearly everybody refuses to act as deputy sheriffs to assist in the eviction of the striking miners, and hence the sheriff made a request for troops. Men concealed along the mountain sides tire at the guards and at the miners going to work and then disappear. The colliery Is at tbe west end of the Panther creek valley, and the troops were ordered to that point. Companies K and K of the Twelfth regiment were placed 011 trolley cars and run through the valley. When the ears reached Summit Hill they were surrounded by a mob of strikers, who burled stones at the soldiers. The soldiers Jumped off and fixed their bayo nets. Aug. 21).—One of the fiercest storms witnessed here in many years has been experienced Great damage was done by lightning in this city and county for several miles around. At Greenleaf's hotel, in Otisville, lightning caused a panic, the hotel being filled with people attending the coaching parade and who had sought shelter from the storm. The colliery Is at tbe west end of the Panther creek valley, and the troops were ordered to that point.
